Chapter 35 Disturbing silence
She tried so much to sleep but couldn’t. She was reminded of how Laura died in front of her eyes.
Just watching her was painful for Chrissy. What would’ve happened to her to make her like this, this thought gave Chrissy chills.
“Eevie, don’t think too much. Try to sleep.” Chrissy said after feeding her the food to which she just nodded.
Eve wanted to sleep but she couldn’t. Chrissy grew worried seeing her like this. A doctor came to check on her. Both Phoebe and Chrissy saw her wincing in pain and pressing her left shoulder.
Eve was not getting out of bed while Chrissy was trying her best to persuade her.
“Come on Eevee. Get up. Let her examine you for once.”
Eve shook her head no and looked down. She didn’t want anything like that. If Chrissy saw the marks on her body, she’d be sad and she didn’t want that.
“I will not take no for an answer. I know your shoulder is hurt.”
Eve gave one last glance to Chrissy and then got up acting as if she was fine.
“Take off your clothes, so that I can check.” The doctor said and Eve looked away from her.
“It’s just us, Eevee. Don’t be shy!” Chrissy exclaimed in order to make her comfortable but little did she know the reason why she was uncomfortable in the first place.
Eve again refused by shaking her head but Chrissy was in no mood for that. She came forward and lifted her sweatshirt gently. Chrissy discovered that she was wearing a shoulder support beneath and hence removed her clothes very carefully. After that she removed the sweater inside.
The weather wasn't that cold for Eve to wear so much layering of clothes. She grew suspicious. Now only one full sleeve t-shirt was left on her. She was about to lift it when Eve held her hand, stopping her.
“You’re making me even more suspicious.” She said, her expression full of worry.
The moment she saw her body made her shiver. She took a step back and stumbled, crying loudly. Even the doctor was shocked to see her. Eve looked down.
All over her upper body, there were dark purple colored bruises. She was wearing shoulder support. Her whole back was of the shade dark purple.
She looked so weak and fragile. Chrissy couldn’t see her like that and left the room, crying. The doctor opened the shoulder support to examine it which was a little swollen by now.
The torture her best friend suffered from the last 9 months broke her heart. She fell down when Phoebe came towards her. Chrissy looked back at her with angry eyes.
“You guys really have no shame!! Just look what you’ve made her into. She was always so full of life and you’ve turned her into a living dead!!” Chrissy shouted at Phoebe.
“I’m so sorry.” Phoebe felt very guilty.
“Now, you are sorry! Look at her! Those marks…those bruises, will your sorry make all her pain disappear? She was beaten up…black and blue all over her body. You said, she’ll be fine!” She screamed and cried her heart out.
The sudden revelation made Phoebe shocked and guilt-stricken. She walked towards Eve’s room and peeked inside. She could see her back and shivered by the sight of it.
After some time, Chrissy got up and went to another room to get new clothes for Eve to wear. The doctor was putting on the shoulder support back on her when she entered the room.
Chrissy helped her wear the clothes she brought. Looking at those marks, she felt as if someone was twisting a knife in her heart. She looked away when she was helping her wear the trousers. Her legs and thighs were covered with those vicious marks.
Eve looked at her best friend and felt sad. Chrissy was continuously crying while helping her put her clothes on. She wiped her tears without saying something.
“I’m so sorry, Eevie. You were so hurt and I couldn’t do anything! Forgive me, please!”
Eve hugged her and caressed her back. Chrissy stopped crying after some time. Eve hugged her and closed her eyes.
The smiling face of Laura came in front of her eyes. She shivered thinking of her last time and tears came out of her eyes. Chrissy wanted to erase all her pain but she knew she couldn’t. One thing that she knew for sure was that she’d never let her alone. She will always be there for her.
The next day, Eve’s parents came there. They couldn’t believe it when Chrissy told them the truth.
Her mom and dad entered the room, following Chrissy. Eve was looking outside the window with blank eyes.
Her mother shuddered looking at her daughter. She looked like someone else, a total stranger. The Eve they know always had a smile on her face. Their little girl looked so lost.
“Hey Lynnie…how are you?” Her dad asked, standing close to her while her mom cried on Chrissy’s shoulder.
Eve turned back and looked at her dad. Then, her gaze shifted to her crying mother. She didn’t cry but walked towards her dad and then hugged him, without saying anything.
Her dad’s heart broke into thousands of pieces when he saw his daughter’s face. Her daughter was being physically and mentally abused by someone when he didn’t even know where she was actually.
“Sweetie, why didn’t you tell us anything before? Are you okay?” He asked but she didn’t respond and just stayed like that in her dad’s arms.
Her mom came running towards her and then hugged her too while she let out a short cry when her mother accidentally pressed her shoulder.
“Auntie, her shoulder is… fractured.” Chrissy said while both her parents looked at their daughter with sad eyes. Her father’s eyes were also filled with tears looking at his lovely daughter like that.
“Why does it happen to my little girl?” Her mom wailed, looking at Eve.
She didn’t speak a word from the time she came into the hospital. Her parents and Chrissy tried so much to talk to her, but she didn’t utter a single word.
At night, the three of them were in the room when the doctor came to check on her.
“Are you feeling any discomfort anywhere, Evelyn?” She asked to which Eve shook her head no.
Her parents and Chrissy followed the doctor who was there to tell them about her test results.
Her parents got another shock when they heard about how badly she was injured. The doctor prescribed the medicines and told them what to do.
After that, they returned to her room where she was lying on the bed looking outside the window.
“Eevie, try to sleep. We’re here.” She said while sitting close to her.
Everyone in the room looked at her with eyes full of sorrow. The girl who could make the surroundings so lively just by being in it seemed to have given up any
