Chapter 34 Boundless sorrow

The next morning, she woke up with sharp pain in her head. She looked at her side, Ayden wasn’t there. All of a sudden, Laura came running into the room.

“There’s some problem outside, Eve. You get ready fast and then we’ve to be ready to move out.” Eve understood that the NSF came finally.

Laura helped her to get up and after getting freshened up, she changed her clothes. She was fully covered with layers of clothing. They were about to go outside when Eve asked her to stop.

“Eve, we will talk once we reach the safe house. Let’s go.” She said, holding the wheelchair.

“Laura, will you come with me?” Eve asked, making Laura confused. After that Eve told her everything.

No one said a word for some time. But then, Laura looked at her with a smile and said, “Yes.”

They both walked out of the room and just as she was told, and went directly towards the back door.

But to their bad luck, they saw Ayden there. He walked towards them and entered the adjacent room.

Immediately, he hugged Eve as soon as he entered the room. He kissed her forehead and then sat down on his knees to look at her.

“You two go from that side, that’s the secret passage which will lead you to our safe house.” He said, while both Laura and Eve nodded their heads in fear.

Then looking at Eve, he asked, “Baby, can you walk?”

“I’ll…try.” She said, still looking down.

“That’s great. Laura, you help her. Now, hurry up!”

Eve got up with his support and then Laura held her. Before walking away from the room, he glanced at Eve for the last time with his sad eyes.

“Take care.” He said and walked away.

There was a sudden loud noise and after that, the sound of gunshots echoed deafeningly in the whole house.

After he was finally gone, Laura looked outside the room to check. When she was sure of that, she held Eve and then walked outside the room, ignoring what Ayden said about the safe house.

Both of them walked slowly towards the back door again as it was very difficult for Eve to walk.

They found someone, who she confirmed as someone from the NSF team. Two men appeared from the sideways while looking at Laura, suspiciously.

“She is with me. She means no harm.”

Suddenly, Eve heard a loud bang very close to her left ear and the next thing she saw was Laura collapsing on the floor. Eve was about to fall down because she was standing on her support, when a man held her.

“N.. no….” She screamed in pain and agony. Laura was lying on the floor, covered in blood. They killed her.

She was going towards her when the NSF men held her and pulled her outside.

“Leave me!! I said, leave me. You are murderers. Leave me!!”

“I’ve to go to Laura. I’ve to save her.”

“Please take me to her. Stop!!! She’ll die…please. I beg you.” She continuously screamed at them.

“She is already dead. There’s nothing you can do. Now, be quiet.” One of the men who was guiding the others, announced.

Her legs felt wobbly. She was the one who asked Laura to come with her and now she was dead because of her. She killed someone. She killed someone who cared for her deeply…her only friend there.

She looked at those men with anger and then withdrew her hands. The men gave her an angry look and came to hold her again, but she refused profusely.

“Don’t touch me!” She screamed at them and was about to turn back towards Laura, but they were fast enough to catch her. They held her again and took her in a car.

She cried and shrieked to take her back to Laura, but they didn’t listen to her. After some time, she fell silent. They took her to a place and gave her clothes to change.

She obediently followed what they said. She was instantly reminded of how Ayden used to force her in the same way. Nothing changed.

Then again, a different car came towards them with different men. She sat into the car and after some time reached somewhere where they asked her to get off.

The whole time, she was looking at the black car window with emptiness filled in her eyes. She lost her friend in the blink of an eye. She felt she’d go mad.

Everything from the past nine months came in front of her eyes. All the suffering, the pain, the agony made her feel breathless.

The other men looked at her in surprise. They were not told about the whole thing because of the secrecy of the plan but they knew she did something exceptional. The bruises on her face were visible, which made them curious.

The car stopped at a place and one of the men came towards her to take her outside. The moment he touched her hand to support her, she flinched. She shook his hand away and looking at him with terror filled eyes, got out.

They were supposed to walk for some distance. Gathering all her strength, she started to walk. A man came to help her but she looked at him totally scared and took a step backward.

Her legs were so numb that she staggered, her body wobbling. Her long open hair hid half of her face. She was in so much pain that even the wind touching her skin was hurting her.

Not only this pain but the pain her heart was suffering from was unbearable. She was looking at the whole path with blank eyes.

After some time, they reached another place. It was a big building. She didn’t know for how long they travelled or for how long she walked. She was lost in her world.

Charles and Phoebe were there. Phoebe started crying once she saw Eve. She couldn’t see her face as she was looking down while staggering. But looking at her after nine months was great.

Phoebe ran towards her and hugged her suddenly. Eve didn’t hug her back but just stood.

“Eve, I’m so happy to see you. We all are!” Phoebe said in between her cries.

“Get inside now. You can talk after that.” Charles said and she drew back from her. Eve was still looking down.

Suddenly she looked up, only to make the both of them feel more guilty. Phoebe came forward, asking her the reason and then held her arm to take her inside. But she didn’t move.

“Eve, Let’s go inside.” Phoebe said softly, controlling her tears.

She took a step back and stared at Charles for some time. Both of them looked at her with a confused expression.

“You.. you killed her!” Eve screamed all of a sudden. Phoebe came closer to support her as she was trembling but she stopped her.

“Don’t…come. You all are the same! You kill people just as you please! There’s no difference between you and that heartless monster!” She vented out her feelings and then fell into the ground.

“She… was my friend! I told her she’d be free but you killed her. It was my fault…all my fault. I shouldn’t have trusted you people!” She was now talking to herself while Phoebe was shocked to see her in such a state.

“Why! She was…a friend. All of you…are the same.” She said, looking at Charles, before breaking down completely. She cried holding her left shoulder. He looked away, guilt-stricken.

She didn’t enter the building and sat there all the time. The plan was to let her rest for some time and then travel again. But neither did she stand from that place nor did she let anyone come near to hear.

After crying for quite some time, she became silent. When Phoebe sensed that she wasn’t resisting them, she requested her to get up and she got up. Another car was waiting for them.

The whole car drive was very quiet. Phoebe tried to talk to her, but she didn’t answer. Her blank eyes and bruised face reflected the condition she was in. She suffered from so much and now anyone could tell how disturbed she was from all that.

She didn’t talk or eat and was sitting in the exact same position as she was before. Just the look on her face scared Phoebe.

The car stopped in front of a hospital and all of them got out. Eve was still looking down, not letting anyone touch her. She got out with great difficulty. First, Phoebe thought it was because she was depressed and hadn’t eaten anything, but when she saw her groaning in pain, she knew something was wrong.

“Eevie…” Eve looked up. It was Christine. Her eyes were red and swollen.

Tears came out of Eve’s eyes once she saw Chrissy in front of her eyes. From the past 9 months, she dreamt of meeting her again and now it was finally happening.

Eve adjusted her hair so that she couldn’t see her face which she already saw and then walked slowly towards her in order to not let her know that she was in pain.

Chrissy ran towards her and hugged her tightly. Both the friends cried their hearts out, embracing each other. No one said a word, just the voice of them crying was heard. Eve winced in pain when Chrissy accidentally pressed her left shoulder.

She sensed her discomfort and she pulled away from her, caressing her face.

“Ohh.. no, Eevie. Did that…bastard do that to you?” She said looking at her face and the splint on her finger. Eve looked very weak.

She held her hand and supported her while walking and went inside the room. Her anger knew no limits when she saw her in that condition. She wanted to kill Ayden.

Chrissy took a first aid box and then they both sat on the bed. She was continuously staring at her best friend who looked lost. She applied some medicine on her face to which she didn’t respond.

“Eve, say something. Do you want something?” She asked but Eve shook her head no.

Then leaning down, she put her head in her lap while Chrissy stroked her hair softly.

“I missed you so much, Eevee. Everything’s gonna be okay, now.” She said, tears flowing continuously from her eyes.
