Pretrial

Chapter Eighty-Five – Pre-trial

All Selene's charges were accepted by the court. The trends shot up when it was released that it was Case Closed that would be handling the case.

It was also revealed that Case Closed's father was killed by Mr. Allen though the reason wasn't released.

It really reduced Mr. Allen's supporters because unlike the Thales Empire, Case Closed was like a national treasure.

The fact made Dominic anxious again because after all was done, he'd have to pay Selene and her price could send him back to bankruptcy.

Still, getting justice for his dead relatives would be worth anything. Today was the day of pre-trial. Dominic realized that was something else that made him anxious.

Mrs. Jones had been arrested and kept in custody, she returned back to the country and got caught at the airport.

A really good lawyer would represent Mr. Allen, he probably would suppress evidence and dismiss some charges. He would be going for a lighter sentence too.

Dominic rubbed his face as he drove. He didn't want to be there but it seemed he had to be.

It had finally come, the preview to the last battle he had been struggling with all those years. And he wasn't even the best warrior, Selene was.

He could only watch from the sidelines. He couldn't cheer literally, she could hit him if he dared. He felt a hand in his head. He frowned. "Bethany, take your hands off me!"

Why did he even carry this pest! Selene carried him as a last resort. He was the one who brought most of the evidence so he could be a witness.

"What? You look like my Bobo when he's nervous. I'm comforting you." Bethany mocked.

The Young Master swatted his hand away. He exhaled, adjusting his clothes. The pre-trial will be successful, there was no need to be tensed.

However, Dominic began to doubt his earlier declaration when the lawyer in charge of Mr. Allen had many cards in his sleeve.

"Your honor, this incident, especially the one concerning Ms. Thales, was said years ago to be an accident. Bringing it back as a murder is pretentious, isn't it?"

Dominic's ears closed to everything around him. Selene was able to squat that one easily but the man kept on firing bullets ridiculously.

He even tried to suppress evidence that didn't seem credible and questioned the credibility of the witness Selene would bring.

Dominic could see from Selene's facial expression that she was growing angry at the man's tactics.

He didn't seem like he was trying to defend Mr. Allen but question Selene's credibility.

"Ah, that lawyer has been defeated by Selene more than twenty times." Bethany showed Dominic his phone screen.

Dominic looked into it, then looked up at the man to see a resemblance, there was. He was a good lawyer too, except he always found himself competing against Selene.

Being beaten twenty times by one person, even past ten, shouldn't he have given up already?

Now, he wasn't being a lawyer but a scum trying to lessen her when his client was obviously at fault.

"Your honor," Selene walked towards the judge. "These are call logs and emails from Tadashi, the armed criminal sent by Mr. Allen after Ms. Thales. These are proof." She said the last part to the lawyer whose jaw remained open.

Dominic looked confused. Hadn't she submitted that a long time ago? So had she been arguing without submitting all necessary proof?

A smirk graced Selene's lips as she returned to her place.

The judge looked it over then turned to the other lawyer. "These are proof. You kept saying that the evidence aren't credible but these are."

The lawyer was quiet, brimming in annoyance.

"Ah, now I know why many lawyers hate Selene." Bethany whispered to Dominic. "It's because she keeps her trump cards then dish them out in a humiliating way."

The lawyer looked down before nodding. "Y-Yes, your honor, those are proof. But my client…"

Dominic didn't bother hear any other thing he'd be saying. Since he agreed that it was proof than the pre-trial was a success. Next will be the trial.

The lawyer could only try getting a lowered sentence for Allen. Selene wouldn't let that happen. She'd make sure he had the worst possible sentence.

The pre-trial was concluded and the date for the trial was given. Dominic had a skip in his steps as he returned to his car. Bethany was amused watching him.

"You didn't end up being useful." Dominic glared at him when Bethany laughed. "Selene handled everything-"

"With the evidence I brought for her." Bethany interjected. "Compared to you who's bringing a case to her yet paying her nothing, I'm more useful. Don't you think?"

His words stabbed Dominic. Did Bethany know how much they'd be talking about when the time came to pay Selene? Dominic tried not to think of it till it finally came.

"I'm heading home, what do you want to do?" he asked.

"Hmm. I sent Bobo over to your house. I'd come home with you-"

"What! Brielle is in there!" Dominic yelled.

Bethany didn't look bothered. "I know. And she's not with my father, if she was, you'd not let her be close to you."

That was true. Dominic calmed down. "You can't just send your son to my house without telling me."

"You are living with his aunty, you know. I sent him there so Brielle can take care of him." Bethany got into the car.

What was he yapping about? Dominic entered the car. "It's still my house, you know. Not Brielle's."

A chuckle left Bethany. "Oh yeah? Didn't you bring her back to be the lady of the house again?"

There was no reply from Dominic.

"Huh?" Bethany faced him. "You guys aren't getting back to together?"

"What happened to Bobo's mother?" Dominic asked back.

Bethany fell quiet then said. "She left."

"Will you take her back if she returned?"

Bethany sighed, but it answered Dominic's question.

"Exactly." Dominic said. "If I didn't wake up from my coma, or recover my wealth, I doubt Brielle would have still been interested. Maybe I married too early. I certainly want to live life freely and date who I like."

A smile came to Bethany's face. "Even if I'm her brother, I'd have to say I agree with you."

The car started and Dominic drove back home.

The marriage with Brielle started all that happened in his life. It'll be disappointing, but he wouldn't do it again.
