Chapter 135 Take The Fall
Devon and Susan got into the car and followed the police car. Back in the chapel, everyone was up and moving around. Some people were outside while others remained inside. Everyone was talking about what had just happened. Bernard and Peter left the chapel, sat in their car and headed back home.
"God has a way of interceding for his people. Men, you need to go to church tomorrow to say thank you to the Lord," Peter said, smiling, but Bernard was very quiet.
"Men, you are free from getting into an unhappy marriage. Why are you moody?" Peter asked realizing Bernard had not said a word since Eva was arrested.
Bernard remained silent. Peter tapped on the divider, and the driver closed it to give them privacy.
"Bernard, talk to me. Did you love Eva, somehow?" Peter asked.
"No," Bernard replied.
"So what is the problem?" Peter asked, wondering what was making Bernard moody.
"Eva and I were friends before. I didn't know much about her personal life, but I put a distance between myself and her when I realised she was using our friendship to terrorise any woman who caught my interest. I have always known her to be a scheming woman, but never for once did it cross my mind that she would take a life," Bernard said. "I never thought my closeness to Angela would make Eva frame her with murder just to send her to prison," he added sorrowfully.
"So Angela ended up in prison because you had an interest in her?" Peter tried to summarise Bernard's submission, and Bernard nodded.
"Let's go get her out then. At least with Eva's arrest, it's easy to get her out of jail now, and you two can be together," Peter said.
"No, Angela doesn't seem to feel that way about me. I thought it was Eva threatening her, but I feel she doesn't love me like I love her," Bernard said.
"Calm down, men. You don't know that yet. See what lengths Eva went to intimidate Angela back in the office. She almost got herself fired," Peter said.
"I know, but I feel Angela likes our president," Bernard said.
"Mr Bryce Moore," Peter asked, surprised. "You know Mr Bryce Moore doesn't do women," he said lightly, drawing Bernard's gaze to himself.
"Mr Bryce Moore was once going out with Susan. That relationship ended with the arrival of Angela," Bernard informed him.
"Hmm, I don't think a member of the Moore family would want to have anything to do with a low-class woman, and secondly, she has been in the papers for killing two members of the Moore family. What makes you think Mr Moore would allow his son to be with such a woman?" Peter pointed out, and Bernard said nothing in reaction except lowering his head.
"Men, let's go get your woman," Peter said.
In another car, Devon was on a call with someone.
"Make sure whatever happened in the chapel does not make it into the news. There was no media present, though, but he ensured the news got nowhere," he said angrily and ended the call.
"Dad, if Eva talks, I am screwed," Susan said.
"Don't worry. You are going nowhere. If anything, I will let Eva take the fall," Devon said.
"Do you think this is the doing of Bryce?" Susan asked, but before Bryce could reply, his phone rang.
"Hello Mark, talk to me," Devon said.
"Sir, I don't know how you will take this, but Josephine Brown, your son's head of servants. Is your son's biological mother?" Mark said.
"Where is Bryce now?"Devon asked, not at all surprised.
"At the Davis family home," Mark replied.
"Get Josephine and get rid of Angela too," Devon instructed.
"Yes, boss," Mark replied, and the call ended.
"What happened?" Susan asked anxiously.
"Your guess was right. Bryce is behind this. He has the backing of the Davis family since he is their new Don," Devon informed him.
"Bryce is the new Don of the Davis family. Gosh, this means he is going to be richer than Devon. The Davis' are very rich and powerful. If I became Bryce's ally, he would protect me. After all, I have been a good friend to him," Susan thought and smiled.
"Why are you smiling?" Devon asked with a frown, and the smile vanished from Susan's face immediately.
"An idea dropped in my mind," Susan said.
"What is it?" Devon asked, staring at her with a frown.
"Let me speak with Eva. I can get her to do anything for me. I was also careful in my dealings. All transfers made from the bank to people assigned to carry out the job were made from Eva's account. It's easy to pin everything on her. I am going to convince her not to mention my name with a promise to get her out," Susan said.
"Okay," Devon said, nodding at the idea Susan had just shared.
Their car soon came to a stop, and Devon looked outside. They had reached the police station. Susan and Devon got out of the car. They headed for the police station flanked by two guards. Meanwhile, Eva was ushered into a withholding cell. The officer who had arrested Eva dropped the findings on the Chief's table.
"The officers who did the investigation, I believe, did not do a good job, or someone paid them to cover things up. This is strong evidence that Eva, an employee of Diamond Corporation, ordered the murder of the two members of the Moore family. If you are looking for a motive, it is also in there. She did this because she believed Ms Angela wanted to snatch her man away from her," the officer reported, and the chief shifted his gaze to the file on his desk.
The chief opened it and glanced through. He was part of the whole scheme, but he could not back his men up.
"Good job done, officer. Let's verify this new evidence and pick it up from there," the chief said, and the officer exited his office.
Devon and Susan entered next.
"Ms Susan," the chief said and shifted his gaze to Devon. "Mr Moore," he said.
"Don't worry, he knows," Susan said. "What are we going to do?" she asked.
"Don't worry, I would make the officers I worked with disappear. You have to make sure your friend does not talk," the chief said.
"That sounds good to me. I will pay you any amount you want. I don't want her in any of your cells," Devon said, and the chief just nodded.
"I will go speak with her," Susan said and exited the chief's office, leaving him alone with Devon.
At the withholding Cell, Susan walked up to Eva.
"Susan, please, I don't want to stay here. Please get me out of here. I can't survive here," Eva cried, still in her gown.
"Eva, calm down. I always have a plan. I will get you out, but I need you to do something for me. Don't say anything to anyone. To save yourself from getting tortured, just admit you did it. Take the fall for now. I will get you out of here and out of the country. I made you a promise, and I will stick to it. I will fly you and Bernard out of the city to another city. So you two can be together as you always wanted," Susan said.
"Thank you, Susan, but how soon can you do this?" Eva asked, holding the bars.
"A month," Susan said.
"A month!" Eva screamed.
"Keep your voice down. If I am going to make you vanish from the cell. This way, no one will attempt to look for you," Susan said.
"Make me vanish?" Eva asked with a frown.
"Yes, fake your death. I will get you a new identity, and with that, you will leave this country with Bernard," Susan whispered.
"Thank you so much, Susan. You are the best," Eva appreciated.
"So you do as I have told you. Everything will go down in a month. You will be free from this hellhole," Susan said, and Eva nodded.
"Okay, I will take my leave now," Susan said, and Eva nodded.
"Stupid fool. Once you accept you committed the crime all alone, your fake death will be your real end," Susan thought as she walked away.
At the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, Angela was lying on her bed inside her cell when one of her prisoner mates was allowed in.
"You have a new cellmate. Be nice, she is crazy," the officer said and locked the cell before leaving.
Angela lay on the bed, not bothering to even lift her head to look at her new cellmate. The lady had her hand in her pocket as she took slow steps towards Angela's bed.
"I heard you killed two Moore family members to be here," the lady said, but Angela ignored her.
"No one ignores me when I talk bitch," the lady said and dragged Angela from the bed.
She quickly wrapped her hand around Angela's neck and began to choke the life out of her. The other prisoners began to make noise, but no officer came in.
