Chapter 150 Do You Have A Best Friend?
The house grew quiet as the night went on. Rebecca had stopped crying, not because she was okay but because she was tired.
She had moved to her room after a while. Amelia helped her without saying much. She didn’t ask more questions. She didn’t push. She just stayed.
Now, Rebecca was lying on her bed, her face turned to the side, her eyes closed. Her breathing was slow and uneven at first. But then it became softer, indicating that sleep had finally come.
Amelia stood by the door for a moment, watching her. Her chest felt tight.
She’s been through too much…
She shook her head slightly and turned off the light before stepping out quietly.
Amelia walked back to the living room and sat down on the couch. She leaned back and let out a long breath.
Tonight was a lot. She thought as her kind went over everything Rebecca had said.
Everything was mixed up and she hated it. She hated seeing Rebecca like that, broken, confused and still holding on to someone who kept hurting her.
Amelia picked up her phone again. She stared at the screen for a moment. Then unlocked it. Her finger hovered for a second as she thought about her online boyfriend.
Should I text him?
She thought about it. Then nodded slightly to herself.
Yeah… I need to talk to someone.
She opened her chat and his name popped up. The small smile on her lips came without her trying.
He was… easy to talk to.
Calm and different, not like all the noise around her. She thought as she started typing. Then she stopped.
What do I even say?
She thought for a second and then resumed typing again.
“Today was a lot.”
She stared at the message and then sent it.
It didn’t take long, her phone buzzed and she looked down quickly.
“I’m here. What happened?”
Amelia exhaled softly. She'd thought he'd be asleep by now but here he was, awake and ready to talk.
She adjusted how she was sitting, pulling one leg under herself. Then started typing again.
“My best friend is going through something really messy.”
She paused, thinking if she should say more or just leave it at that. She sighed and just continued. After all, he didn't know Rebecca and neither did he know Derek.
“She’s married… but things are not good. Her husband hurt her before. Now he’s acting like he still wants her, but there’s another woman again.”
She stopped and looked at what she wrote.
Her chest tightened a little as she thought about it. It still made her angry just by reading it so she just hit send.
A few seconds later, her phone buzzed again, indicating that he'd sent a reply.
“That sounds really hard.”
Amelia nodded slightly.
Yeah… it is.
“Is she okay?” he texted again.
Amelia read that twice. Then sighed.
What is okay?
She typed slowly.
“She says she is… but she’s not. She cried today. A lot.”
She stared at the message for a second before sending it. Then leaned her head back on the couch.
Her eyes moved to the ceiling as various thoughts flooded her head.
Why is love always like this?
Her phone buzzed again and she sat up a little.
“She’s lucky to have you.”
Amelia blinked as her lips pressed together slightly. That… felt nice.
She didn’t expect that, she thought as a small smile came again.
“I don’t feel like I’m doing enough.”
She sent it quickly because that was how she felt.
Her phone buzzed again with a reply. It had come quicker than she had expected.
“You’re there. That’s enough sometimes.”
Amelia read that slowly.
“You’re there…” She repeated it in her head, and somehow that made her chest feel lighter.
Maybe he’s right…
She shifted slightly on the couch, feeling more relaxed now.
“She still loves him.”
She typed it without thinking too much because that was the truth and it was the biggest problem.
She picked up her phone when it buzzed with a reply and sighed when she read it.
“That makes it harder.”
Amelia nodded in agreement.
“She’s confused,” she typed. “Part of her wants to move on. Another part is still holding on.”
She stared at the message before sending it. Because saying it like that made it feel even more real.
Her phone buzzed again.
“That’s normal.”
Amelia frowned slightly.
Normal? Really?
“How?” she typed.
The reply came almost immediately. “Because feelings don’t just stop. Even when they should.”
Amelia read that twice, then again and again. Her chest felt… quiet, like that made sense.
She leaned back again, holding her phone loosely. Then she typed, “Do you have a best friend?”
She didn’t know why she asked that but it just came out.
Maybe she was just curio
us or maybe she wanted to know more about him, but whatever it was, she wanted to know.
