Chapter 151 A Week Away
The reply came slower this time. She waited and after sometime, her phone buzzed.
“Yes.”
Amelia smiled slightly.
Of course he does. Who doesn't have best friends?
“What’s he like?” she typed.
She waited again. A little longer this time. But the reply still came.
“He’s a confused man right now.”
Amelia blinked. That answer… it felt familiar. Like he was Derek whom seemed confused.
“Confused how?” she asked.
She sat up a little more now, feeling quite interested in knowing why he'd said that. Her phone buzzed again.
“He doesn’t know what he wants.”
Amelia’s brows pulled together slightly. That sounds like someone I know… She thought but didn’t say it out loud.
“Are you helping him?” she typed instead.
The reply came.
“No.”
Amelia blinked.
No?
“Why?” she asked curiously.
This time, the reply took a bit longer but she still waited. Her fingers tapped lightly on her phone as she waited.
As soon as her phone buzzed, she checked the message.
“Because he needs to figure it out himself. This isn't what I can help him with. It's his life and decision to make.”
Amelia went still.
That… That sounded exactly like what she told Rebecca.
Her lips parted slightly.
Wow…
“If I tell him what to do, it won’t be real,” he added in the next message.
Amelia read it slowly. Her chest felt strange.M, although in a good way, like she understood something better now.
Maybe… she doesn’t need to push Rebecca too much. Maybe she just needs to be there. Like he said.
She smiled a little. Then typed,
“You’re wise.”
She hit send before thinking too much about it. A second later, a reply came.
“I’ve just seen a lot.”
Amelia smiled again. She liked that he was just simple, without showing any pride or showing off. He was just being honest.
She adjusted herself again. Pulling a pillow closer. Then typed,
“So… about us.”
She paused, her heart beating a little faster now.
Why am I nervous?
She shook her head slightly.
It’s just a question, she thought as she continued typing.
“Our first meeting is next week.”
She stared at it. Then added,
“Are you ready?”
She sent it quickly. Before she could change her mind. Then dropped her phone slightly on her lap. Her heart was beating faster now.
Why do I feel like this?
Her mind started running. What if I don’t like him in person? What if it’s awkward? What if she remembered the past when she saw him? Could she really be in a relationship this time?
She picked up her phone again quickly. Should I just cancel? The thought came suddenly and she entertained it briefly.
I can just say something came up… She stared at the chat. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. Just one excuse, that’s all it would take to cancel the meeting next week and get them to reschedule.
But then, whether or not she canceled, she'd need to meet him sooner or later. Of was she just going to keep canceling until the man grew tired? It was her who'd insisted on not exchanging photos even when he'd said he wanted to see her face at least.
Canceling the meeting would be too unfair on him. He'd been nothing but patient with her.
She let out a small breath. No…
I won’t do that. She straightened a little and then typed,
“I think I’m ready.”
She paused. Then added, “I’m actually looking forward to it.”
She stared at the message.
Then hit send. Her chest felt light and heavy at the same time. In no time, her phone buzzed.
“Good.”
It was just that simple word but somehow, it made her smile. She looked down when another message came.
“I’m looking forward to it too.”
She read and a smile curled up her face. Amelia leaned back on the couch.
Her smile stayed on her face, small, soft and real. For the first time that night, something felt… easy. Not the heavy and painful feeling accompanying everything Derek brought.
This just brought calm, so much that she wished Rebecca could feel it too.
Taking a deep breath, she hugged the pillow closer. Her eyes drifting slightly.
Maybe things won’t be so bad. She thought quietly. Then glanced toward the hallway.
Where Rebecca was sleeping, probably still hurting and still confused even in her sleep.
Amelia’s smile faded a little but not completely.
She’ll be okay. She has to be. She thought, grateful that at least, this time, Rebecca won’t go through it alone.
Amelia looked back at her phone one more time. Then placed it beside her.
She lay down on the couch, pulling a light cover over herself. The room was quiet again but this time, it didn’t feel as heavy.
Her eyes slowly closed, and for once, her mind wasn’t full of worry.
Just quiet thoughts and a small hope. That maybe… Things would start getting better.
