Forty- The Wrong Kind Of Safe

Forty- The Wrong Kind Of Safe
Aria's POV

"Aria, Lev, why didn't any of you tell me Kael is your mate?" Elara asked, her voice filled with hurt and betrayal. After the little drama with Kael and Marissa and my reaction to it, she didn’t need us to connect the dots for her he already knew that there would be only one reason I would react the way I did, and considering it is established that I have a mate she hadn’t still known about it was now obvious who it was.

"I am sorry, you were just so angry about everything that didn't seem like an important detail" I sniffed trying to put myself together. We were currently in an empty class, they were both trying to calm me down from what just happened but my mind wouldn't stop replaying his words...of course, I am just his tutor and nothing more, what else could I be.

“And how is that not an important detail? That is even the peak of everything. If you had told me I wouldn’t have understood everything even better…and Lev you knew too but you also didn’t bother mentioning it to me” She jabbed. I totally understood her anger but had no idea how to follow it up coupled with how I am feeling. I guess leaving out a detail as little as the name of your mate changes the whole argument.

“I am sorry, Elara. It was not my intention to keep the identity of her mate a secret but in our defense, you didn’t really ask” Lev shrugged and it took all I had to refrain myself from throwing something his way, what a response.

“Really Lev? I just thought it was some random guy at the party, how the fuck was I supposed to know that Alpha Jheir is actually Aria’s fated mate?” Elara shot back.

“Please guys, I really just want to get today over and done with and I am in no mood to add you both to my problems” I groaned wiping the tears on my cheeks away, Kael keeps laying games and he would hate my response to them’ He better be prepared for whatever comes his way.

“Sorry Ri, come on let's get you to class” Lev quickly adjusted himself holding back his response to Elara which I greatly appreciated. He walked over to where I was seated, picking my chair from the table in front of me before helping me up. Elara stood silent for a few minutes like she was contemplating whether she would let this slide or ask all the questions she wanted to ask but thankfully she chose the safer option for us both.

“The bell will go off any minute from now, we'd better head out” Elara spoke, her voice less angry and emotional than before. I nodded, taking the hand Lev offered.

“Ri” He called out softly before I could turn.

I turned to fully face him trying the hide the little tears that still lingered in my eyes, I could see how much he wished to take all my pains away from me but he didn’t say the one thing I knew he wanted to say…the urge to request the one thing I was even too afraid to mention was written all over his face but I couldn’t be any more grateful to him for not mentioning it. I tried once and even with everything that happened, a part of me is still very happy it didn’t work but a second time may just do the trick and I really don’t want to find out.

“I know you are hurting and this is all very difficult for you but I promise you, I am always here, I will always be here. You can always come to me no matter what, you know I hate to see you cry right?” He said his voice so soft and sweet, I almost burst into fresh tears. Why couldn’t he have been the one? Did the moon goddess have to be this cruel to me?

“I know, Lev, I know” I sniffed gladly accepting the hug he pulled me in for. I inhaled his scent basking in the familiarity of it and the comfort it has always brought me, Lev the one person who has always been a safe place for me no matter the circumstance, I can never be able to pay him back for all the love he has shown me.

“Let’s get going, okay?” He cooed as we pulled away.

“Okay,” I nodded, feeling a whole lot better. He smiled lightly at me as he placed a kiss on my forehead and then two others on my cheeks making me smile.

“That’s more like it. More smiles and only smiles” He beamed at me. My heart leaped in love and excitement but I still felt the difference…Lev’s love for me always felt differnt… safer, comfortable, warm but it was just that, no butterflies, no rapid increase in heartbeats, and of course not causing me sleepless nights, while Kael on the other hand is just like a mystery I can’t even seem to figure out, He always seems to throw me off balance even with things as little as flexing his muscles when he stretches or the way his face morphed into a really serious one when he is trying to think, the little actions that seem so big. It was like I wanted Lev to know how safe and good he would be for me but Isla on the other hand doesn't care what the risk might be, she wants Kael with everything in her and she never hesitates to show me that every single time…the horny monster.

I turned to look at Elara and I caught the look again, the look she occasionally had on her face like she was in her own world but this time it felt more raw, more primal, and for some unknown reasons a part of me became unsettled as I watched her.

“Elara, aren’t you coming?” Lev spoke up unaware of anything. She quickly snapped out of her daze, her face changing instantly, if I wasn’t so sure of what I saw, anyone could have sworn it wasn’t there. She didn’t even seem to have noticed my stare or if she did she didn’t act like it and that only grew my discomfort.
