Chapter 125: The secret structure
Jacob
A mission with my brothers was definitely not something I thought would have happened if asked about it two years ago or even six months ago. Who would have thought that so much would change in just a short time that was beginning to make me realise something more. It was not so bad working with my brothers. In fact, it made me feel a special closeness to them and I started to wonder as I was driving why we never bonded this way. Perhaps, I should say thanks to the bounty hunters for this avenue and Jace for being the common thing that we all were mutually connected to.
I drove through the outskirts and peeped at the rearview mirror to find Damon sleeping. He looked so peaceful and not so mischievous. I admire him now. A version of me who had gone out of his way to take risks for us. I mean, who would have thought that such a heart lies beneath that playboy glee that we were all used to. It made sense now, those times that I would find him snooping around. And now I could tell why the bullies flocked around him. He made himself a deviant and their friend so they could leave us alone.
If anything, Damon has definitely sacrificed the most.
And there was Garrett, trying to wrap his head around what was contained in that journal. He looked super engrossed with what he was doing and by the looks of it, he was hoping to solve our problems too. Garrett laboured a lot. Shouldering blame for everyone. I felt really bad too.
Peter too. He might have been different but he worried a lot. His quiet gait was not fancy. It was his way to keep observing everyone to make certain that everything was going well between us all. I have always been lucky but I had not realized the true luck beside me.
We arrived at the place now and I stopped the car. It was really confusing to see just rocks around here. Really tall ones and I was almost thinking that we were at a dead end.
"I'll go check it out." I said to Garrett.
"Do I wake him?" He asked me.
"Not yet. Just stay with him and leave me to check. I'll be right back. I need to get to the top there and see what I can find from higher ground." I said to him,
"Okay. But be careful." Garrett had said to me. I noticed Damon stir and I smiled as I walked away.
This place was in the middle of nowhere actually. No one would probably be wanting to come around here as it looked like some place infested by hillbillies. It should be dangerous for a human. I started scanning and then decided on the rock in front of us. It seemed like the one with the highest peak and very quickly, I started scaling it which was not hard for a werewolf. We could make jumps on even walls if we focused on our balance.
I eventually made it to the top and was literally stunned by what I saw. There was a massive structure that was hidden behind this place. It was built to look like it was shooting out of the ground like a sprout of the sorts which was really overwhelming. I could not have believed that something like this, so technical existed here. But there was something strange too, how had they managed to keep it a secret unless some measures were taken to keep it a secret.
There was no time to waste. We needed to get this place gone and I called for Garrett to wake Damon. Then after returning to them, the three of us decided to go back up when Damon brought something to my attention.
"The car, don't you think it would cause someone to suspect something seeing a car parked in the middle of nowhere?" He asked.
I looked back at it.
"You sure do not leave any stones unturned, brother and I think you should think about becoming a detective." I said to him,
"If only they would accept playboy detectives. I think we should drive it to that bush and then get leaves to cover it up." He suggested.
"Sure. But it would take three since this is a sparse land." I said.
Then we started going back. I got in and drove through the car to the bush he had pointed out and then we started trying to cover it with reeds and bushes. It was not really fun but eventually, we got it done and I was proud of how far we had come. Looking at each other, we nodded as we started going over again.
"Those bastards. They sure have themselves a mighty structure." Damon muttered.
"Do you think the government is aware of this?" I asked.
"From what I got from that journal, some congressmen were involved. I looked them up and they were all dead. In weird ways. I suspect foul play." Garrett said.
"Probably murdered so that their involvement does not get leaked to the public. Those bounty hunters think they are righteous when in truth, they are the very replica of what evil stands for. I cannot believe it." I said.
"Trust me, I can. Humans are evil when they want to be and it can be really scary. So now we have that cleared, can we get to what we are here for. Something about this place gives me the creeps." Damon said.
"Sure. We should get going." I said.
Instantly, we started heading for the facility. As we approached, we checked for any signs of security, there was absolutely nothing and then we approached the entrance. It was really strange because this door has not been opened in a long time and it seemed to be operated by some sort of electricity. It was up to Garrett to fix it and he started by breaking open the circuit box then started twisting wires.
Soon enough, there was a loud sound and then it opened. We entered this really massive structure and inside was more bewildering. I have never seen something like this before. It was deserted and somehow, Garrett got us light.
"Wait, is there electricity here?" Damon asked.
"No. Solar. Still electricity technically but no. That shows everything I'm doing now is thanks to my genius mind." Garrett said to him.
"Yeah, right. You're going to have to teach me a thing or two though. Or, I would have issues with you when all this is over and done with." Garrett said to him.
"Sure. Right after you start taking me along with you to parties." Garrett said.
"Ah, my partying days are over. I thought we should now focus on our mate?" Damon asked.
He was actually embracing the whole joint mate thing. If Damon was okay with this then that had to mean that a big problem has been solved. I used to know him as the one who wanted everything for himself alone but hearing him speak now made me question myself too.
"Let's get going. Garrett, you mentioned a self-destruct button. Where is it?" I asked him, trying to bring them back to the reason why we were here.
"Ah, yes. So it says that it should be around somewhere with cages or something. Maybe, we should fan out and start searching for it. That way we can cover more grounds. He did not leave a map to the self-destruct button actually." He said to us,
"He probably was not thinking they would need to shut it down anytime soon. It's probably between him and his brother in case of emergency should someone find this place. They could then get rid of evidence." I muttered.
"I think that too. I mean, this place could actually lead to lots of investigations." Damon said
So it was settled. We had to fan out and start searching the grounds together. I started going the way I had chosen and there were lots of labs in this area and doors. I kept searching and saw nothing like that but there was enough to research on. There was this office I entered and there was a book there that caught my attention. I went and started looking through it, there were illustrations of cruelty mated out on both supernaturals and humans.
Turns out, there were even more evil and dirty secrets on the side of the bounty hunters. They had been testing humans too cruelly and the supernatural. Obviously they wanted to gain the gene for themselves and I was really stunned.
We did not have time now to read, so I took the book as I started checking other things. I got to a particular door and when I pushed it open, I was caught with a pungent stench. Upon opening, I was met with a mass burial ground. Lots of bodies and they were already skeletons.
I took out my phone and I started taking pictures because I knew we would have to expose a whole lot of things. That was when I started going back as I needed to call my brothers to come behold this evil. Also, I was hoping someone would have had something positive to show, like the self destruct button. Although I doubted that, knowing that Damon would have already started calling out or something.
I returned and I saw Garrett emerging from this door.
"Find anything?" He asked me.
"Just some records that they were more than experimenting on supernaturals. They experimented on humans too." I said.
"On humans? What? That's evil! And yet they call us monsters when they are the real monsters." He said, he looked really pissed as he spoke right now.
"Well, there's also a mass burial site back there. Since we're destroying this place, I figure we should start taking pictures of this place. The world needs to see that these evil bastards are the enemies." I said to him,
"Exactly." Garrett said.
"And Damon?" I asked him.
"Let's wait for him here. Can I see that book?" Garrett asked as he came close to me.
I gave him the book and he started going through it and with each turning page, we could see more of the atrocities of these assholes.
"Hey guys, what are you two fawning over?" Damon, who had just come out, asked but before we could respond, he was already speaking. "On, what does this lever do?"
Garrett and I were already trying to stop him but Damon being classic Damon had already pulled on the lever. Suddenly, the ground where he stood shook and he stared at us, not moving. I was about to tell him to move when it started taking him down and a worried Garrett and I rushed over but we missed him.
We could only look down the hole and see that he had landed safely.
"Are you okay, Damon?" I asked him and he looked really fine.
"Hey guys, I'm fine actually." He said.
The both of us at the top let out huge breaths of relief. I guess we did care for the naughty asshole more than he could ever possibly know and understand. I mean, who goes around pulling levers they are just asking questions about with no single knowledge about?
Definitely my stupid brother, Damon.
"Well, it's an old escalator sort of thing. I think there's another lever there to come up with." Garrett said to him.
"Yes, there is one right...wait, did you all hear that?" Damon suddenly asked and looked in a particular direction.
We all went quiet and then I heard it too. A hissing sound from down there.
"Damon, come up." I said to him as I was beginning to feel something strange.
"I'm coming. Let me check." He said.
"Damon, don't." I said but he already started going.
"I know, he makes me think if I should kill him sometimes too. Classic Damon." Garrett said to me.
I was worried because I did not want anything to happen to him. I mean, I would not want to start explaining that on our first mission together, I had lost my brother. That would be a literal slap on my face.
That was when the little twat came back.
"There are vampires here. In cages. We should help them." He said with such excitement on his face like he found himself some sort of lost but found object.
I really need to break his head.
