Chapter 126: Vampire experiments

Garrett

You ever have a sibling you wish it would not really matter if you kill them because right now, Damon was filling that position for me. His rash reactions and lack of foresight against risk was alarming so much that I began to wonder how he had managed to survive all these years.

How on earth do you go around pulling levers and when the ground beneath you starts to give way, you remain put? How do you hear sounds that are scary and then risk your life to go investigate. He was beginning to make it look like our purpose here was to try and keep him from doing something stupid other than save our pack.

Now, he had returned with the not so good news on how there were vampires in here. And he was looking excited much like he wanted to release them. I was counting on the fact that he might have already done that. I looked helplessly at Jacob and the disappointment on his own face told me everything that I needed to know about his emotions at the moment. He did not actually find it pleasing that our brother was such a jerk with zero motor skills.

"Damon, stand right there and don't do anything else or I swear by the moon goddess, I would strangle you." Jacob threatened him.

I could tell he was worried about Damon more than he was angry. He seemed to me like he was trying his best not to be really angry right now but was feeling the need to show some degree of reaction.

"Alright, dad. I'm standing here. Anything else you want me to do?" He asked.

"Get on the damn escalator and then push the lever to come up." Jacob said to him.

"But those vampires could be of great help to us." He said looking really bad.

"Yes and we can always go down for them. Just come up here so we can rub our minds together." Jacob said to him.

Damon hesitated as I could tell that he was thinking of what stupid thing to do. So I started telling him that he should trust us and come up. We needed to talk together on what to do. He reluctantly pushed the lever and the moment he was up and safe, Jacob tackled him down and started demanding what he was thinking. This caused a little uproar. There were louder hissing sounds and shaking in the cages probably. I had to tell them to stop and try listening first.

Eventually, Jacob got off Damon with a stern warning that he was not allowed to get himself killed unless we were not together. He did not want to lose his brother and Damon stood up. He started mumbling apologies when he looked at Jacob.

"Aw, you're crying? You love me that much?" Damon asked him.

Jacob looked away from both of us. Clearly, he did not want to seem weak.

"I'm not crying, something got into my eyes and that's why you think that I'm crying. Why would I cry over some idiot that's trying to get himself killed?" He demanded.

"That settles it, you are definitely crying." Damon said.

"I'll kill you. Now, to the elephant in the room, what did you see escaped. Description in full." Jacob demanded.

"There are vampires down there. They look weak and some cannot move. They are lying on their stomach and actually look really lean and skeletal. I can't begin to think of how long they must have been down there though." He said.

"So, you happen on that kind of thing and what's on your mind is to free them?" Jacob asked him.

"I mean, one asked me to help them. They don't look like they are strong and seeing them in chains makes me feel sad. We definitely cannot destroy this place alongside them. I would not allow that. Just so you all know that I am serious." Damon said, folding his arms stubbornly across his chest.

He might not understand it but what he said right now could have made him seem like a traitor to the pack. I mean, why defend vampires over your own pack? That could only hint to the rest of the pack that he was definitely on the traitors side. He was also the only one that had brought home a vampire in the past. Why on earth was he thinking it was okay to bring them out of that cage? So much that you put your foot down for them.

"And I take it that you are oblivious of the fact that they are hungry at the moment. If this lab has been shut down for so long, don't you think that they have been in here as well for so long? They would have fed on you that instant you opened that cage and you would have been in trouble that we cannot save you from. It could have led to a vampire outbreak because trust me those vampires would feed on anything. Why don't you think?" Jacob demanded.

"Of course I do think so. I just don't think we should leave them here to die. We should maybe help them and they could help us too. Please, Jacob. Garrett told him." Damon said to me.

Why was he bringing me into this scenario? I mean, I did not want to make anyone seem like I was not on their side especially when the obvious person was himself. I mean, I am a true werewolf and I most certainly hated those blood suckers. If anything, I would instantly demolish this building with them in it. But he had said something that made sense to me.

"Jacob, do you think we can try speaking to them?" I asked him.

"And then they would need blood to feed. How do you intend to feed them?" Jacob demanded.

"I don't know." I responded honestly.

There was no-one here for long miles.

"I could go get us some. Please. Just give me time and I will be back." Damon said.

"Really? How many were there?" Jacob demanded.

"I saw seven." Damon responded.

"If seven vampires are released and lose control and they go around turning people or even declaring war on us, would you take responsibility for it? Because the way I see it, all the blame would be passed onto us alongside you because we're already the evil seed." Jacob said.

"Then killing them would make you happy? I thought we were going to make a difference." Damon said.

My brother was beginning to get better at gaslighting, it would seem. I smiled now at this knowledge and then looked to Jacob to see what he was going to say about this. Clearly, Damon had him by the bullocks.

"Fine. We go down and speak to them. If they do not strike me as safe, I shall have them killed and I would not mind feeding you to them first." Jacob said.

"Jacob, I know I don't say this but I trust your judgement always. If you don't think they should be let free after seeing them, then I would not say anything. You would have my full support to do whatever. Just see it first." Damon said to him.

Well, I guess he has made a point as shortly after that, the three of us were on our way down. And soon started going in the direction he went. The stench of death made me really angry and I could tell Jacob was trying to hold his peace. If there was anything, the smell of vampires would never appeal to us. Not now, and certainly not ever.

I was beginning to wonder what made Damon seem really okay with them. He has always been accommodating but I would never think that for once, he would care about vampires this much.

We came out here and there were cages here but only one had occupants. The one inhabited by the vampires. At first glance at them, I felt really sad for them. I mean, who on earth lives like this? Hell, they looked like they were dying already. The skin on their bodies was all dried and they basically looked like live skeletons with dried skin. I felt sad but even more sad when I saw that three of them were young. One about twelve.

Children? Since when did they start turning children as well? I thought the vampire code was against the turning of children.

They barely moved and only the one closer, a female that managed to speak.

"Help us." She said,

I could tell they needed blood and then looked at Jacob. The look on his face was that of shock mixed with sadness.

"Jacob?" I called him.

"No one deserves this. Not even vampires. This is pure evil." Jacob said instead.

Alright, I could feel a little relaxed now about the fact that he felt really sad about what was happening. He then looked at Damon and asked him to go get the blood while we waited. He however had me follow so Damon could send down the escalator in case we wanted to go up. When he returned, he was to call for us and I did so.

I returned and I found Jacob seated down on the floor, staring at them. He was really sad, an emotion he tries his best to hide away.

"I'm sorry that this was done to you all." Jacob said and then the female one slowly managed a weak nod.

I could not take this anymore.

"Can you drink any blood type?" I asked her and she managed a nod. I started looking around for something that would look like a container to use and then , I found something at the corner. It was an old container and I took it out as I started rolling my sleeves up.

"What are you doing?" Jacob asked me.

"We need one of them to at least speak to us. If we can give blood then I think we should at least." I said to him,

I then slashed my wrist and turned it into the container. The scent and sight of blood made them all rattled as they started hissing hungrily. Luckily, these cages were really strong and then my wound healed. I had collected a little bit and Jacob started asking them all to back away. They hissed angrily at him but he then told them that we would leave and no one would get a drop of blood if they did not oblige. The threat went a long way as they started going back and I went close to her.

The moment the container got to her hand, she quickly snatched it and drained its contents with the others hissing around. She threw the container at me as soon as she finished, hissing as her fangs showed threateningly. But then, she started gaining a little more flesh and colour.

"I'm sorry. I didn't want to bite. Thanks." She managed to say.

"It is fine. We have more blood coming for everyone but hopefully we can talk to you to know things at least." I said.

"And if everyone behaves, I might be tempted to give everyone a little drop pending when the blood comes. Is that clear?" Jacob asked suddenly.

"They understand. What do you want to know?" She asked.

Jacob had already picked the container and rolled his sleeves as he started retrieving blood.

"The children, since when did you start turning children?" He asked her and she looked at them.

"Actually we didn't turn them. They were humans that had been infected. The bad men who took us wanted to do more experiments." She said,

"Those bastards. You there, come take, sweetheart." Jacob said to the smallest child.

She was too weak to move and right then, others that were also weak started assisting her, propelling her forward.

Jacob then handed her the blood which she hungrily drank quickly.

"Tell me about these bad men. What did they do? Who was in the other cages?" Jacob asked.
