Chapter 62 Chapter 62
The morning sun was soft and warm as Savannah stepped out of her room. She wore a loose gown, her belly showing more now that she was eight months gone. The air smelled fresh, and she could hear the birds singing outside the window.
Adrian was already in the sitting room, talking to one of the maids. He turned quickly when he saw her. “Good morning,” he said with a smile. “Did you sleep well?”
Savannah nodded slowly. “Yes, I did. The baby was calm too.”
He smiled wider, clearly relieved. “Good. The doctor called earlier. He wants to see you today for a check-up.”
Savannah’s eyes widened. “Today?”
“Yes,” Adrian said simply. “I already arranged everything. The car is ready.”
She hesitated. “You didn’t have to stress yourself. I could have gone alone.”
Adrian shook his head. “No way. You’re not going anywhere alone again. You need care, Savannah. Let me do this.”
Her lips curved into a small smile. “You’re too kind, Adrian.”
He smiled back, his eyes soft. “Let’s go. The doctor doesn’t like late patients.”
They both walked outside. The maids greeted politely, smiling at the gentle way Adrian helped Savannah into the car.
The ride was quiet, but peaceful. Savannah kept her eyes on the window, watching the tall trees and busy people outside. Once in a while, Adrian would glance at her, wondering how such a calm, broken woman could still smile like that.
When they reached the hospital, a nurse led them to the doctor’s office. Savannah sat quietly while Adrian stood beside her.
Moments later, the doctor walked in. He was friendly and kind. “Good morning, Mrs…?” he paused and looked at her.
Savannah looked down. “Just call me Savannah, please.”
The doctor smiled. “Alright, Savannah. How are you feeling?”
“I feel okay, just a little tired sometimes,” she answered softly.
Adrian nodded beside her. “She doesn’t sleep much, doctor. She likes to walk around too.”
The doctor chuckled. “That’s normal, but she still needs rest. Pregnancy is not easy, especially this stage.”
He asked her to lie down for an examination. Savannah did as told while Adrian turned his face away to give her privacy.
The doctor used his tools and smiled after a few minutes. “Good news. The baby is fine — heartbeat strong and healthy. You’re doing well, Savannah.”
Savannah let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “Thank you, doctor.”
Adrian smiled proudly as if he was the one having the baby. “See? I told you everything would be fine.”
The doctor continued, “But she needs more rest. Less stress, less walking around. She should eat well and avoid overthinking.”
Savannah smiled faintly. “I’ll try.”
Adrian added quickly, “I’ll make sure of that.”
The doctor laughed lightly. “Good. I see she’s in safe hands.”
After the check-up, Savannah and Adrian walked out together. She held her file close to her chest and smiled shyly. “Thank you for coming with me.”
Adrian opened the car door for her. “You don’t need to thank me, Savannah. I’m just doing what’s right.”
She shook her head. “Still, you’ve done too much for me. You didn’t have to.”
He looked at her seriously. “I wanted to. You and that baby mean something to me now.”
Her heart skipped a beat. She quickly looked away, pretending to fix her gown. “You’re just saying that.”
He smiled. “Maybe I am, maybe I’m not.”
Savannah didn’t answer. The car moved slowly through the road again.
Back at the mansion, the maids rushed to welcome them. One of them carried her file, another took her handbag. Savannah kept smiling shyly. She wasn’t used to this kind of care.
Inside, Adrian told the maids to prepare fresh fruit juice and light food for her. Then he turned to her. “Go and rest. I’ll check on you later.”
She nodded, but before walking off, she turned back. “Adrian,” she called softly.
He stopped. “Yes?”
She smiled gently. “Thank you again.”
He looked at her, his eyes warm. “You don’t have to keep thanking me, Savannah. Just take care of yourself.”
She smiled again and walked upstairs slowly, her hand resting on her belly.
Inside her room, she sat on the edge of the bed, lost in thought. The doctor’s words kept ringing in her head. Rest. Don’t stress. Don’t think too much.
But how could she not think?
She touched her stomach gently. “You’re almost here, my little one,” she whispered. “And you have no idea how much love you’re already surrounded with.”
Tears filled her eyes — not from sadness this time, but from something deeper. Gratitude. Peace.
She thought about Adrian. How he had changed her life in just a few months. From that small, dirty room full of rats and broken dreams to this mansion filled with kindness.
Her lips trembled slightly. “He’s too good,” she whispered. “Too kind. I don’t know what I did to deserve this.”
Downstairs, Adrian sat on the couch, his mind far away. Every time he looked at Savannah, something in his heart grew warmer. He couldn’t explain it, but it felt right.
Daniel’s words came back to his head. You’re falling for her, man. Admit it.
He sighed and leaned back. Maybe Daniel was right. Maybe he was really falling. But he didn’t care anymore.
He smiled to himself. “As long as she’s safe and happy, I’ll be fine.”
Later that night, Savannah couldn’t sleep. The baby kicked gently, and she smiled, rubbing her belly.
She looked out of the window, the moon shining bright. “Maybe this is what peace feels like,” she whispered softly.
And for the first time in months, her heart didn’t feel heavy.
Not knowing that soon… her peace would be tested again.
