Chapter 223 Chapter 223
The night was quiet, but Savannah’s heart was not. She sat on the edge of the bed, her face buried in her palms.
Adrian was fast asleep, his arm still stretched to where she was lying before. She couldn’t sleep anymore. Her chest felt tight, her head was spinning, and her heart kept whispering, “Why now, Nathaniel? Why now?”
She stood up slowly and walked to the window, staring at the dark sky. The moonlight fell softly on her face. She thought of Liam, of Adrian, of the baby in her womb — everything she could lose if the truth came out.
Tears started falling before she could stop them. One by one, they rolled down her cheeks. She tried to wipe them away, but they kept coming. Her whole body shook as she covered her mouth to stop herself from making noise.
But the sobs grew louder. “God, please help me,” she whispered. “I don’t want to lose my peace. I don’t want to lose Adrian.”
Adrian turned in his sleep, then slowly opened his eyes. He didn’t see her on the bed. “Savannah?” he called softly, his voice still sleepy.
She didn’t answer.
When he sat up and looked around, he saw her by the window, her shoulders shaking. He jumped up quickly and went to her. “Savannah, what’s wrong?” he said, wrapping his arms around her.
She tried to hide her face, but he gently pulled her closer. “Talk to me, baby. Why are you crying?”
She couldn’t say a word. She just buried her face in his chest and cried harder. Her tears soaked his shirt.
Adrian held her tighter, rubbing her back slowly. “You’re scaring me, Savannah. Please talk to me. Did someone hurt you?”
She shook her head, gasping for breath. “No… no one… I just… I just feel scared,” she finally whispered.
“Scared of what?” he asked softly, brushing her hair back.
She looked up at him with red swollen eyes. “I don’t know… I just have this fear inside me. Like something bad is coming.”
Adrian sighed and kissed her forehead. “Nothing bad is going to happen, okay? You have me. You have Liam. You have this baby. You are safe.”
She nodded weakly, but more tears came out. “Promise me, Adrian… promise me you’ll always protect us.”
He looked deep into her eyes. “I promise,” he said in a steady voice. “Even with my last breath.”
Savannah hugged him again and held him so tight, afraid to let go.
They stayed that way for a long time, standing by the window, their hearts beating fast together.
When she finally stopped crying, Adrian carried her gently back to bed and covered her with the blanket. “Try to rest, okay?” he whispered.
She nodded and held his hand tightly. “Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he said, lying beside her and wrapping his arms around her again.
Savannah closed her eyes, still trembling. She could feel his warmth and hear his heartbeat, but deep inside, the fear didn’t leave.
She whispered softly to herself, “Please God, don’t let him find out… not now.”
And Adrian, still holding her close, stared into the dark room with worry in his eyes.
He didn’t understand what was wrong yet, but he knew — the woman he loved was breaking inside.
