Chapter 199 Chapter 199
The next morning, sunlight gently streamed through the curtains, painting the room with a soft glow. Savannah was still in bed, her face pale and her body weak. She had cried herself to sleep the night before, and now she felt sick and drained. Her head hurt, and her body felt heavy, but she didn’t want to get up.
Adrian quietly opened the bedroom door with a tray in his hands. He had made her breakfast himself — warm tea, toast, and a little fruit. He placed the tray carefully on the bedside table and sat beside her, looking at her with concern written all over his face.
“Good morning, my love,” he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
Savannah opened her eyes slowly and forced a small smile. “Morning,” she whispered weakly.
“You’re burning up,” Adrian said, touching her forehead gently. “You’ve got a fever.”
“I’m fine,” Savannah murmured, trying to sit up, but he quickly helped her. “No, you’re not fine. You didn’t eat dinner last night. You didn’t even talk to me. You need to rest and eat something.”
She sighed quietly, leaning back on the pillow. “I’m sorry,” she said in a soft voice. “I didn’t mean to worry you. I just... I had too much on my mind.”
Adrian looked into her tired eyes. “Savannah, you don’t have to face anything alone. I told you that before. I’m your husband. Whatever it is, we’ll handle it together.”
Her eyes softened at his words. This time, she didn’t stay silent. She reached out and held his hand. “I know,” she said gently. “I just don’t want to bring pain into this home again. I’ve been through too much, Adrian. I thought I had moved on completely, but last night... seeing him... hearing his voice again… it broke something inside me.”
Adrian squeezed her hand. “You don’t owe that man anything. He’s your past. I’m your present and future. Don’t let him take away your peace again.”
Savannah nodded slowly, tears welling up again, but this time they weren’t from pain alone — there was love and comfort in them too. “You’ve been so patient with me,” she whispered. “Even when I shut you out.”
Adrian smiled faintly. “Because I love you, Savannah. And I’ll keep proving that to you every day.”
She smiled weakly, resting her head on his chest. “You’re my peace, Adrian,” she whispered.
“Then don’t let anything destroy that peace,” he said softly, kissing her forehead. “Eat something, please.”
Savannah chuckled faintly, the sound barely above a whisper. “Alright, alright,” she said, picking up the cup of tea. “Only because you made it.”
He laughed lightly, relieved to see her smile again. “Good. Because I wasn’t leaving until you did.”
For a few minutes, the room was filled with quiet warmth. Adrian sat beside her while she ate slowly, his eyes never leaving her. Every move she made reminded him of how much he loved her — her gentleness, her quiet strength, her heart.
When she finished eating, she leaned back again and whispered, “Thank you for taking care of me.”
Adrian smiled, kissing her hand. “Always.”
Outside, the morning birds sang softly, and for the first time since the dinner party, Savannah felt a little peace return to her heart.
