CHAPTER 27 What if you get sick if it keeps going

Stephanie settled down in Jack's house, still in her old room. Perhaps it was the change of environment or his inherently weak body, the baby woke up each night and thus needed her care all night long.

Stephanie didn't know when she fell asleep by the baby's bed. After being suddenly woken up by his cry, she began to rock him gently and patiently.

"Don't be afraid, my sweetheart. Mom's here with you." She sang her original lullaby with a smile. There was some kind of particular motherly charm in her.

She hoped she could look after her baby like this for the rest of her life. Though she knew it was pure fantasy, she couldn't help thinking of things of that kind.

Under her tender care, the baby fell asleep again. She put him back on his bed carefully and lied next to him. She looked at her sweetheart again and again, and finally fell asleep in such serene atmosphere.

After a while, the door opened quietly. A tall figure sneaked into the room under the moonlight. It was Jack.

He moved to a side of the bed quietly. There was a deep tenderness in his eyes, which were staring at the sleeping mother and child. It hard to imagine what kind of deep love could make a man such depressed.

He sighed, but not for himself. These days, he watched Stephanie got thinner and thinner for spending all her vigor on looking after the baby. However, he could do nothing apart from asking the cook to prepare her some more nutritious food. He once offered to look after the baby, but Stephanie didn't trust him so much.

"What if you get sick if it keeps going like this?" He touched Stephanie's face gently. Seeing that she was totally unresponsive, he took off his shoes and lied beside her in relief. Hugging her waist softly with the other hand, he felt a sense of joy which he had never experienced.

Finally, he kissed her hair, after which he closed his eyes and slept reluctantly. The moonlight came in from outside the window. Everything seemed so harmonious.

The next day, Jack woke up before dawn. He glimpsed at Stephanie and left the room slowly. He had to leave. If Stephanie found him there, god knew what she was going to do. Things had to go stage by stage, and he was patient enough to weave a net that could catch her heart.

Stephanie then came out with the baby. The fact that the baby could eat something pleased Stephanie, as well as Jack.

Because of her requirement, Stephanie and Jack dined on two different tables. On one side, Stephanie was eating happily with the baby; on the other side, Jack was eating alone, looking pathetic.

What he did last night made it hard for him to restrain his urge now. The food was virtually tasteless for Jack. Suddenly, he came up with an idea. While Stephanie was wiping the baby's month, he moved his chair to the other table.

Thus, when Stephanie raised her head, she saw Jack eating aside elegantly, his face expressionless.

Stephanie didn't say a word, but stopped eating too.

Feeling guilty, he started to explain. "The cook made my food too salty today."

Stephanie squinted her eyes at Jack's weird look. "But your food and mine are from the same pot."

Jack was choked and his ear root turned red. After a while, he responded, "Really?" However, he still had no intention to move his chair away. Seeing that Stephanie was not eating, he even passed her some food with his chopsticks. "Try this. You are losing weight these days."

Looking at the food he gave her, Stephanie hesitated before she went on glaring at Jack. This time, Jack couldn't keep on eating like nothing happened. He dropped his chopsticks too. Though he was still in a poker face, he looked a bit piteous now.

"Go back to your place." Stephanie picked her chopsticks after seeing that Jack stopped eating. Though she picked all the food he gave her out of her plate, she didn't simply leave like she did before. This change comforted Jack for a bit. He knew that he needed to be patient, so he left with his chair rather happily.

Stephanie went back eating as if nothing happened, but she didn't notice that when Jack got back to his table, the food she was holding dropped.

Life went on like this in a slow pace. The two appeared to be a simple couple. Despite some small clashes, their life gave a feeling that even hard ice would eventually melt. Jack, who was paying all his attention to Stephanie and her baby, had long forgotten Liz who left that day. After that, Liz came to find Jack for several times but was never welcomed. Besides, Jack's arrangement was so flawless that Liz couldn't find any chance to harm Stephanie and her baby again.
