CHAPTER 26 The devil that made her lose her life
He's right. She had no rights to make rules. How could she forget that Jack had always been high-handed and indifferent?
Stephanie shivered. Her face was now as pale as paper.
It was pure chaos in her mind. What made her think that Jack had changed? Is it what happened at the airport, or his appearance in the hospital?
Jack had always been Jack. The one that forced her to bear a child of Steve. The one that made her lose her life. The one who's a devil.
She had always been the rash one. While she was still thinking, Jack pulled out his arms and pushed against the wall, trapping Stephanie between. The suddenly shortened distance and Jack's big face made Stephanie feel even worse.
"What are you…" Before she could finish her sentence, Jack kissed her. Stephanie felt disgusted and wanted to resist, but eventually gave up being afraid that the baby would get hurt. She had to bear the humiliation in silence. Tears of shame dripped down her glaring eyes.
Jack's kiss was invasive, which gradually froze her mind. Though that's something she was unwilling to remember, she was reminded of her scary past, especially the time she was lying on the operating table.
How did that feel like? Her body was freezing. Her life was running out as the time flew. The white surgical lamp before she eyes was dazzling, but it didn't bring her any hope.
She fell in love with Jack, but why? Why she had loved him for all these years? Why couldn't she let go of him?
That man never loved her. Even they got married because of his friend Steve's death, he had never loved her.
He hated her. He hated her so much because of Steve's death. For him, she meant only the child, which was Steve's only bloodtie.
Stephanie wanted to cry, but she didn't know cry for what. She wanted to ask, but she didn't know what to ask. Everything was in despairing black. It was the despair hidden in this house.
Was she going to spend the rest of her life like this? On that operating table, after knowing that Jack decided to keep the baby at the cost of her life, her love for him died along with her body, but what now? The man was kissing her cruelly, trying to bring the panic and despair from the past back to her.
The long kiss finally ended. Jack's heart was broken when he saw Stephanie's emotionless face covered in tears.
The two remained speechless. Stephanie broke the silence with a cold laugh at last and said, "Is that how you compensate Steve, Jack?" Her words were cold and scornful, smashing on his head like a hammer.
He had never thought that the words he used to mock her would be used against him.
Jack felt powerless again. It was even worse than the last time when he heard Stephanie's death. Death of a mortal body was no doubt horrible, but what about the death of a heart, the death of one's love? Her warm smile in that dream came to his mind again. When facing the true Stephanie, he found her smile to be cold and despairing.
He took a step back. Everything had changed. If the barrier between them was Steve before, it was now a completely dead heart.
Stephanie no longer loved him…Jack was finally aware of this fact. He remembered Shawn's mockery at the graveyard:
"She hoped that she had never met you and fallen in love with you."
Is it too late? Jack suddenly felt the urge to laugh. He lowered his head and reached out his hands. Stephanie wanted to dodge, but she found nowhere to go. Luckily, his target was not her.
Jack gently touched the baby's head. He was now looking at the two he knew best in this world with his innocent eyes.
Suddenly, Jack felt like this baby was the best portrayal of his past. He once knew nothing about himself and his feelings, so he hurt Stephanie that bad.
"Okay." He whispered, "I promise to keep away from you."
