Chapter 36 36

Chapter 36 36

Domenico made his way back to Lucy's ward like a man returning from war.

Despite his steady gait, the feeling inside his chest was a very hollow one.

This was the last thing he'd expected to come across. Seeing him come back after what had transpired earlier, the nurses immediately went alert, already hurrying towards him to stop him from entering the room.

Every one of them had that strange, worried look on their faces now.

Because they feared he would only make things worse.

"Sir, please you can't go in there." one nurse said quietly. "She's recovering. But-" she paused and then her voice dropped before she added. "She screamed the last time she saw you. If you want to see her, please wait for a day or-"

Her words were instantly snuffed out the second Domenico turned and cut her off with a sharp look.

He did not like being told what to do by white coats, especially when the situation was a very serious one.

He forced the door open and stepped inside. That was enough to make the nurses step back instantly, hands hovering over the machines as they feared the worst.

The last time Lucy had been very terrified even without Domenico acting the way he was acting now.

They wondered, thus, what he was going to do and how Lucy could react. The real fear was in knowing that it could impact her recovery.

She was in bed when Domenico walked in and when she heard the whispers and murmurs from the nurses, she immediately looked up.

When she saw Domenico, her eyes immediately went wide. She backed away, already shaking from the thought of being close to him.

She looked like someone who was expecting a blow because of how her whole body was on the edge, ready to move if Domenico made any moves that didn't seem benign.

He did not go to her right away. Instead, he walked to the side of the room, close to the window, and grabbed a chair.

Then he sat down close, near enough that she could feel him not so close that she would think he would touch her. He put his hands together and watched her.

The hum of the machines was the only sound he could hear at that moment.

"Did your mother ever work in a store, Lucy?"
He asked, without mincing words or skirting around the topic.

He figured she'd be more comfortable that way. He needed to confirm if the woman who'd saved him years ago was the same woman that gave birth to her.

That didn't seem to work because she was still scared. But when he repeated the question, her eyebrows suddenly went from wide to scrunched up, in confusion.

She stared at him, surprised and guarded now. But she was still confused.

"Why would you ask that?" She whispered.

He shrugged. "I need to know if your mother ever worked at a mall. It's important."

He sounded quiet, but it sounded like there was steel under it.

The urgency carried. Lucy's face tightened as she glanced back at the nurses that were standing by the door, every single one of them with worried expressions.

She thought of her mother.

Yes, she'd worked at a supermarket or mall, she couldn't remember what exactly it was but her mother had done the work.

But the real worry was wanting to know why Domenico was asking the question and what was in for her and her mother. Was he going to hurt them because it looked so much like it?

But that's when he pushed out all of her worries. "Hey, don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you in any way. I just need to know if she worked there because I think I've seen her somewhere before."

Lucy glanced back at the nurses once again. One of them nodded at her, itching to see Domenico walk out of the room and leave them alone for good. She turned back to him and nodded.

"Yes. She used to." She finally said, but her voice was small, caused by the fact that remembering her mother only made her remember everything that had led to this point.

It was all tragic and it brought back a fresh wave of anger.

Domenico’s expression shifted instantly.

And then a small, tired smile crossed his face. He breathed out slowly.

"That's good." He said before fishing his phone out of his pocket.

He placed the phone to his ear and called Locke. "Locke," he said as soon as the line clicked. "I need you to go to the second family mansion right now. When you get there I want you to bring me one of the maids. Her name is Anna Davis. Bring her to me."

Locke’s voice slid through steadily after a while. "On my way boss."

Domenico turned back to Lucy and flashed her another smile but there was nothing about the smile that made her feel a bit better. Domenico’s presence alone and his history was enough to snuff out every bit of warmth that his promise had given her. He gave her a knowing look.

"Everything's going to be okay. I know you're scared. I know you're worried, but I assure you, it's going to be fine."

She didn't say anything and could only watch as he got up and began walking around the room, looking somewhat happy. She had no idea why, but it just unnerved her.

However, things didn't seem like they were going to be fine because minutes later, Locke called again.

"Do you have her?" Domenico asked.

"No, I'm on my way. But I sent some of my men to go before me."

"Okay?"

"We have a problem, boss. I just got information that some men just went to the mansion to pick her up. They took her and nobody knows where they went."

Domenico felt his gut churn. His hand tightened on the phone as he glanced back at Lucy.

All of a sudden, it seemed as if the room got small. He had a premonition that whoever took her didn't mean well, even though he didn't know who did.

"Find her. Now!"
