Chapter 35 35

Chapter 35 35

When the cars rolled up to the mansion the next day, it was already bright. The sun was up, casting a beautiful orange hue over the mansion.

Anna Davis cleaned her hands on her apron and straightened, causing the cloth to catch dust. She always came here once it was dawn. Her shift started then and ended at midday, then she had the rest of the day to do whatever she wanted.

She knew the routes, the rooms and everything about the house so getting around the way of things wasn't hard anymore. Since she was employed to work at the mansion to pay for the sins of her husband, she had always dreamed of seeing her daughter again and even though that hope was still, although it was just a flicker now, she wondered if it would ever be possible.

Her accursed husband had a deal with very dangerous people and they had changed the course of her life in an instant. And it was so bad that she feared she would never get to see her daughter again.

That was the reason why she rarely spoke to anyone and kept her head politely down, making small talk when the anguish got too much to bear. She never imagined she would ever get to leave the mansion because there were dozens of security guards that suspended the property.

That morning, she was folding linens in the servant's wing when the engines growled outside. The other maids around looked through the kitchen window and saw the sleek, black Mercedes-Benz G-wagons racing across the tarmac.

Once the cars stopped, the doors opened and men in knackered stepped out of them. Most of them were big, giant men whose presence alone was enough to command the attention of any room or space they walked into.

"Who are they?" One maid whispered.

They'd seen guards around before but not this type. These ones looked more formal and dangerous, and bigger. Anna, for no reason, felt the hair rise on her arms.

She set the towel down and watched them for a moment. These were the men that had taken her daughter. She remembered when they came searching for her husband, how they wouldn't listen to any reason at all. They didn't agree to any promises she made to them to pay back. All they clearly wanted was revenge or their money, immediately.

Thinking about that night usually stirred up the question: was Lucy still alive? She had tried to believe that all this while but that hope was withering with each passing day. She was terrified that it would come to a day when she would give up on Lucy.

She'd been feeling that way for the past few days. She was snapped out of her reverie when the men moved, walking up the steps that led to the entrance of the second Stone mansion. They reached the steps and were stopped by the guards who were guarding the front door.

"What do you want?" Anna couldn't make out what they were saying any longer so she went back to her task.

She couldn't wait to be finished with the day's task and get back to her life.

"We were sent to bring one of the maids. She's a middle-aged woman. Anna Davis." one of the men said.

The maids who were working just above the spot where the men were conversing froze in shock when they heard the men say that.

Whenever these men came, it was usually for a bad reason.

"Anna!" One of them called her, worried.

When Ann heard her name, she felt her heart twist with fear. Why were they calling her name and why did she feel it had to do with those dangerous looking men who'd just walked into the mansion.

"What's the problem?" She asked.

The maids soon told her what was happening but she didn't believe them.

She went back to finish up her task when the door opened and a guard walked in.

The muscular man scanned the room and soon spotted her. He waved her over and they went down to the entrance where the men were waiting for her.

Once there the men didn't say any other word before they walked up and took her arms, before she could pull away.

"What- what do you want?" She asked, trying to be polite because it was the only thing that had helped keep her out of trouble a couple times.

The other times it didn't work, she was smacked in the face and sent off with a warning, but that was better than being tortured and locked up.

Some new maids who thought being stubborn had found themselves in that situation and Anna was old enough to know that the sooner she went by the rules and lived normally, nothing much would be done to her. But that politeness didn't work this time because the men pulled her forward and shoved her towards the car.

"Shut up," the man said. His voice was flat and final. "We want you to come with us. That's the only explanation you're getting, woman."

Anna's hands flew up. "Please, what's going on? Where are you taking me-"

But before she could finish, one of them shoved her again, this time harder.

Getting to the car, they pushed her in before two men sat on either side of her. She tried to beg but one of them took out his gun and placed it on his lap, but he had the muzzle pointed in her direction.

"Don't speak again." That was enough to instantly silence her.

She stopped speaking but her lips were shaking uncontrollably. She nodded and went quiet. Then the drive to the warehouse began. On their way there, Anna said all kinds of prayers.

She didn't know what was waiting for her but she had a feeling it was going to be very bad.

When they reached the warehouse, the men dragged her inside and made her sit on a hard chair, tying her hands behind her back and pressing a strip of tape across her mouth.

Once secured, the leader picked up his phone and dialed Blaze’s number.

Once Blaze picked, he conveyed the message. "She's here, sir." Blaze sighed. "On my way." Then he grabbed his pistol, before ending the call.
