Chapter 68
Chapter 68
The girl standing before her wore a simple white shirt and black dress pants—the standard employee uniform of the Brown Group. She had delicate, gentle features, clear eyes, and a soft demeanor. You could tell at a glance she was good-natured.
She was the one who had called earlier to say that Jagger was in trouble.
Beatrice stood up and nodded slightly. Though her manner was somewhat distant, her tone was full of gratitude.
"Miss, thank you so much. If it weren't for you, who knows what might have happened to Jagger."
Isabella quickly waved her hands, looking flustered.
"Ma'am, you're too kind. I just happened to be there. It was nothing really—anyone would have helped."
Earlier, Isabella had thought she didn't care much about Jagger, but now it seemed that wasn't quite the case.
She wondered what Isabella's relationship to William was.
"You can't say that."
Beatrice clearly saw the exhaustion in Isabella's eyes and understood she'd been running around for quite a while. She pulled out a checkbook from her bag, quickly wrote down a string of numbers with her pen, and held it out.
"This is a small token of my appreciation. Consider it Jagger's way of thanking you. You must accept it."
When Isabella saw the amount on the check, she was shocked.
The figure was enough to cover ten years of her salary without eating or drinking!
The Brown family certainly lived up to their reputation—always generous with money!
Isabella shook her head, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Ma'am, I didn't help Jagger for money. I just didn't want anything bad to happen to him, so I really can't accept this. Please take it back."
She did like money, but she couldn't take advantage of someone's gratitude. She preferred the money she earned through her own work. If she accepted this windfall, she'd feel uneasy about it.
Beatrice hadn't expected Isabella to refuse so decisively. She looked at Isabella with even more appreciation.
In today's world, there are too few girls who could remain unmoved by such a large sum, especially girls from ordinary backgrounds. For her to do this was truly rare.
This girl had good character—well-behaved and sensible. She was far better than those women who only knew how to seduce men to get ahead.
Thinking of William and the rumors about his female secretary, Beatrice still felt some displeasure.
However, facing Isabella, her attitude softened considerably.
"In that case, at least tell me your name so we can repay you in the future."
Isabella hesitated for a moment, then finally shook her head.
"That's not necessary. As long as Jagger stays healthy, there's nothing I need to be repaid for. I... have to get to work, so I'll be going now!"
Without waiting for Beatrice's response, Isabella ran off and disappeared.
Beatrice watched her retreating figure, feeling even more favorable toward her.
Jagger's judgment was indeed good. This girl was really nice. If William were dating someone like her, she certainly wouldn't object.
Then Beatrice looked at Jagger, who was staring longingly in the direction Isabella had left, a glimmer of light seeming to shine in his cloudy eyes.
"I'm not mistaken—she's the Martinez family's daughter! She's Amelia! She's the one I chose years ago to be William's future wife! Go find her and bring her back!"
Beatrice pushed Jagger toward the exit, looking helpless.
"Jagger, you're really confused. I've met Amelia from the Martinez family. How could she possibly be that girl just now?"
But Jagger stubbornly shook his head.
"She is Amelia. How could I be wrong? William has already agreed to marry Amelia. You must find her and bring her back!"
Beatrice stopped in her tracks, a flash of surprise in her eyes.
Had William actually agreed to marry Amelia?
Jagger must have made such a fuss that William had to compromise.
This was actually good news. At least William wouldn't be with that secretary of unknown origins anymore.
After settling Jagger down, Beatrice stepped aside and took out her phone to call William.
The phone rang for a long time before it was answered. William's cold, distant voice came through, without a trace of warmth.
"What is it?"
Ever since their unpleasant parting at the nursing home last time, his attitude toward Beatrice had been like this—cold as if she were a stranger.
Beatrice felt a slight pang in her heart, but she suppressed her emotions and spoke slowly.
"Jagger secretly left the nursing home today and was hit by a car. A kind person sent Jagger to the hospital. I'm with him now."
Hearing that Jagger was in trouble, William's previously cold tone changed instantly, with barely noticeable tension in his voice.
"Is it serious? Is Grandpa hurt anywhere?"
"He's been examined. Your grandfather only has minor external injuries, nothing serious. Don't worry. A kind young woman saved Jagger. If it weren't for her, Jagger might have been wandering the streets."
William was silent for a few seconds, his eyes flickering slightly.
"Got it. I'll come see Grandpa after I finish what I'm working on."
Beatrice thought of what Jagger had said earlier and directly asked William about him and Amelia.
"Jagger said you agreed to marry Amelia? That's great. After all, Amelia is the socialite who's most worthy of you. From now on, you should settle down and stop mixing with questionable people."
William frowned, displeasure flashing in his eyes.
When Mason died back then, Beatrice had remarried without a second thought, and now she wanted to lecture him?
"My affairs are none of your concern, and who I'm with isn't for you to manage either."
With that, William hung up directly.
Jagger had told him to bring back a wife, so as long as he brought back a wife, Jagger wouldn't say anything more.
As for who he'd bring back, that was of course for him to decide.
Thinking this, William looked up at Isabella's workstation, puzzled.
It was almost noon, and Isabella still hadn't come in.
She had never been late to work before.
On the other side, Beatrice stared at the dark phone screen. After thinking it over, she called Amelia's mother, Marlowe Grey.
Since the two families had arranged the engagement, she'd been in contact with Marlowe all these years.
Now that William was finally willing to marry Amelia, she naturally wanted to share this good news with Marlowe.
Marlowe was a well-known lawyer overseas. At this very moment, she had just finished a case and received Beatrice's call.
Hearing that William was willing to marry Amelia, Marlowe was genuinely happy.
"Looks like William has finally come around. We should set a wedding date as soon as possible. Their wedding must be grand—we need to let the whole world know."
A few days ago, when Amelia had called her crying, she'd been somewhat worried. Now it seemed everything was working out.
Beatrice smiled along.
"Since we're setting a date, when are you planning to return to the country? And shouldn't we also tell Mr. Martinez?"
Just then, her assistant handed over a schedule. Marlowe glanced at it—she happened to be returning to the country soon to follow up on a case.
