Chapter 67
Chapter 67
Isabella let out a cry and rushed over, no longer caring about being late for work.
She crouched down and carefully held the old man's arm, her face full of concern.
"Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself anywhere? Does it hurt?"
The old man frowned, tears welling up in his cloudy eyes. He tried to push himself up from the ground, but his legs were too weak to support him.
He looked up at Isabella, and his previously confused gaze suddenly brightened, as if he had seen someone familiar.
"Whose daughter are you?"
The old man asked breathlessly, reaching out to gently grasp Isabella's wrist.
After getting a clear look at the old man's face, Isabella's heart skipped a beat.
That voice, those features, and the noble air about him—wasn't this William's grandfather?
Before she became William's secretary, she had seen news about Jagger on TV.
Back then, Jagger was still in good health, until later news reports said he had been in a car accident and rarely appeared in public after that.
She never expected to run into Jagger by chance today.
And judging by his condition, it seemed he might have some dementia?
She had heard Chase mention that Jagger had been living in a nursing home. It looked like Jagger had wandered out on his own.
"Mr. Jagger Brown, hello. I'm Mr. William Brown's secretary, Isabella Taylor."
Isabella softened her voice and spoke patiently.
"Please don't move yet. Let me help you up slowly, and we'll go to the hospital for a checkup, okay?"
Jagger stared at Isabella's face for a long time. The longer he looked, the softer his expression became, and the pain on his face seemed to ease.
He suddenly broke into a smile, like a child who had received candy, gripping Isabella's hand and refusing to let go.
"Like... so much like... are you... Preston's granddaughter?"
Isabella was confused and didn't understand what Jagger meant. She assumed he was talking nonsense.
She didn't dare move Jagger carelessly and could only gently support his back, slowly helping him to a bench by the roadside.
Jagger's arm was red and swollen from the impact, and his knee was scraped. It was heartbreaking to see.
Isabella was anxious. While checking his wounds, she comforted him softly.
"Don't be afraid. I'll take you to the hospital right away and call Mr. William Brown. He'll be here soon."
Jagger nodded obediently, his gaze fixed on Isabella's face, looking more and more pleased.
He patted the back of Isabella's hand, his tone solemn, as if entrusting her with something extremely important.
"You're such a good person, and so beautiful. Will you marry my grandson? My grandson's name is William. He's excellent—he runs the Brown Group, he's handsome and rich. If you marry him, you definitely won't regret it!"
Isabella froze instantly, her cheeks heating up rapidly. For a moment, she was so embarrassed she didn't know what to do with her hands and feet.
She never expected that, after taking a fall, the first thing Jagger would say when he came to would be to ask her to marry William!
And it was the same William she had just rejected, yet who made her heart race out of control!
This was too absurd!
"You've misunderstood. I'm just Mr. William Brown's secretary."
Isabella quickly explained, trying to pull her hand back, but Jagger wouldn't listen and was unusually stubborn.
"If I say you're William's wife, then you're William's wife!"
Jagger put on a stern face, looking like he wouldn't take no for an answer.
"Anyway, I've taken a liking to you at first sight. You must marry William. If William dares not to marry you, I'll break his legs!"
Isabella didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but seeing Jagger's serious and stubborn expression, she felt both helpless and sad.
Dementia had made Jagger forget many things, yet he still remembered to find William a good wife. It showed how much he loved William.
Isabella stopped arguing with Jagger. She hailed a cab and helped Jagger into the car. Just as she was about to call William, the phone in Jagger's pocket suddenly rang.
Isabella's attention was drawn to it. When she saw "Family" displayed on the screen, she didn't hesitate and answered the call.
But the voice on the other end wasn't William's—it was an elegant yet distant female voice.
"Where have you run off to again?"
Isabella frowned.
Who was this person? She was clearly Jagger's family too, so why did she sound completely unconcerned, even a bit impatient?
Isabella steadied herself and said softly.
"Hello, you're a family member of this phone's owner, right? He was hit at an intersection just now. I'm taking him to the hospital now. Please come as soon as possible."
Beatrice, on the other end, frowned.
"He fell? Which hospital? I'll be right there."
Isabella gave her the hospital address and hung up, but suspicion arose in her heart.
What was the relationship between the person who answered the phone and William?
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the hospital. Isabella borrowed a wheelchair and pushed Jagger for his examination. In just half an hour, she was sweating profusely from all the running around.
Throughout the whole process, Jagger stayed obediently by her side like a well-behaved child, refusing to let go of her hand for even a moment, occasionally muttering—
"Beautiful... looks so much like... marry William..."
Although Isabella felt helpless, she occasionally responded to him. Otherwise, Jagger would make a fuss, attracting frequent stares from passersby.
Soon, the test results came back. Jagger only had superficial wounds and minor soft tissue bruising. No bones were injured, and his head wasn't hit either.
Isabella's anxious heart finally settled down.
When she wheeled Jagger to the waiting area, Beatrice finally arrived.
As she walked over, she was still holding her phone, seemingly discussing something with the person on the other end—probably work matters.
Seeing this, Isabella felt even more uncomfortable.
After all, an elderly person had fallen. How could she show no urgency and arrive so late?
No matter how busy work was, could it be more important than the old man's health?
Beatrice hung up the phone and looked around. When she spotted Jagger, she quickly walked over.
Today, she wasn't wearing an exquisite designer suit but simple casual clothes. Her demeanor was no longer as distant and proud as before, but rather more approachable.
"Jagger, how are you? Is there anywhere else that's uncomfortable?"
Beatrice crouched down in front of Jagger, checking his body. Only after confirming there were no serious injuries did she breathe a sigh of relief.
When Jagger saw Beatrice, his eyes flickered. He seemed to recognize her, but quickly turned his head back, his gaze glued to Isabella as he spoke proudly.
"Look, this is the wife that I picked for William. Isn't she beautiful?"
Beatrice paused, only now noticing Isabella standing nearby.
