Chapter 69
Chapter 69
"I'll be going back home in a couple of days. We haven't seen each other in so long; we can catch up. It's also a perfect chance for Amelia and William to meet and spend some time together. As for Jagger, I'll explain everything to him."
After hanging up, Marlowe let out a long sigh of relief and turned to look at her assistant.
"There's a jewelry auction overseas soon. I've got my eye on a piece. Go bid on it for me - I want to give it to Amelia."
The assistant paused for a moment.
"But you just gave Ms. Martinez a gift not long ago."
Marlowe shook her head helplessly.
"Amelia went missing when she was little. I was nearly desperate, even had thoughts of dying. Thankfully, we found her later. Of course, I want to make up for all those years of mother's love she missed out on, so no amount of gifts is too much."
The assistant nodded, and after seeing Marlowe into her car, hurried off to handle it.
Meanwhile, back home, Isabella had just rushed from the hospital to the Brown Group when William called her into his office.
Isabella's heart was pounding with anxiety.
Was William going to blow up at her for missing work without notice?
Isabella kept her head down, shoulders hunched.
William's gaze quietly locked onto her, and finally, he pulled out a box of desserts from the drawer on his left and pushed it forward.
"You missed the whole morning of work, so you probably haven't eaten much. Eat these desserts, and don't leave until you're done."
Isabella looked up in surprise, staring at William in disbelief. She felt like William could see right through her.
Had William investigated where she'd been and found out she saved Jagger?
If so, would this suspicious William think she had some hidden agenda?
At this thought, Isabella quickly waved her hands.
"Mr. Brown, I'm not hungry yet. I don't need to eat. I still have some files to organize, so I'll get back to work. Just let me know if you need anything."
Isabella was about to leave when William had already stood up, walked over to her in a few strides, and grabbed her wrist.
"I'm just asking you to eat some desserts. Do you really need to avoid me like this? Or are you looking down on the desserts I'm giving you?"
"Of course not! Mr. Brown, I just feel like you're being too good to me. I really don't deserve your kindness!"
Isabella blurted this out almost without thinking, purely on instinct.
She was just an ordinary employee, while William was someone exceptional. There was a gap between them that could never be bridged.
So she had to stay rational. Otherwise, if she got caught up in this, the price she'd have to pay would be more than she could bear.
William froze slightly, looked at Isabella in silence for a moment, then let her go. He turned back to get the desserts and stuffed them into her hands.
"I just thought since you were gone all morning, you must have been busy with something and didn't have time to eat. That's why I'm telling you to eat. If you really don't want to accept my kindness, then just throw it away."
With that, without waiting for Isabella's response, William walked straight out of the office toward the conference room.
Isabella stood there in a daze, looking at the desserts in her arms, feeling even more awkward.
So William didn't know about her saving Jagger - she'd just been too sensitive.
Looks like she needs to act more naturally around William from now on.
As for these desserts... William gave them to her, so she might as well eat them.
Isabella's mind was at ease. She ran to the break room and finished all the desserts before organizing the files and taking them to the conference room.
After the meeting, William got a phone call and left directly. Isabella was happy to relax, doing some simple tasks and then just resting at her desk.
During lunch, Isabella suddenly got a call from the hospital.
"Ms. Taylor, your mother has woken up."
Isabella's eyes went wide with disbelief.
"Really? That's wonderful! I'll come right away!"
Isabella asked Chase for time off and rushed to the hospital.
When she entered the hospital room, the doctor was examining Nora, who was weakly leaning against the headboard, her face pale.
Hearing movement at the door, Nora turned her head with difficulty.
Seeing it was Isabella, Nora smiled weakly.
"Isabella..."
"Mom!"
Isabella could no longer hold back her emotions and rushed toward Nora.
It was all real - Nora had finally woken up!
All her efforts hadn't been in vain!
The doctor had finished examining Nora, but his expression still looked serious.
"Ms. Taylor, I need to tell you something. Let's talk outside."
Before Isabella could properly feel the warmth of Nora's embrace, the doctor called her out.
The doctor looked at her with a serious expression.
"Ms. Taylor, I have to tell you that although your mother has woken up now, there's a strong possibility she could fall back into a coma. You need to be mentally prepared for that."
Isabella nodded.
"I understand, doctor. My mom was in a coma for so long - the fact that she's woken up at all is already a miracle, so I can accept this situation."
"That's good. I'll switch your mother to some different medications and see how those work. Now that your mother has finally woken up, you should make the most of the time and talk with her."
After the doctor left, Isabella returned to the hospital room.
Nora's condition was clearly much weaker than before, but she still insisted on beckoning to Isabella.
"Isabella, come here."
Isabella walked over and sat beside her, gripping her hand tightly, her eyes reddening.
"Mom, I'm so happy you're awake. The doctor said as long as you get proper treatment, you'll definitely be like before! Then I'll take you traveling everywhere, and we'll never be apart again!"
In the end, Isabella didn't tell Nora that she might fall back into a coma.
Nora had finally woken up - she couldn't dampen her spirits. She needed to give Nora hope to keep going with treatment.
Nora couldn't help but shed tears.
"Silly child, I've been such a burden to you for so long. The fact that you've kept paying for my treatment makes me so happy. Actually, there's something I've never told you..."
Nora paused, recalling the past.
"You're not my biological child. When I found you, you were just a baby. I didn't want to let you freeze to death on the street, so I took you home. But I never thought I'd end up dragging you down like this."
Isabella shook her head hard, tears streaming down her face.
"Mom, I already know. Hugo told me. But it doesn't matter - in my heart, you're my real mom, and I'll never give up on you!"
Nora raised her hand and stroked Isabella's hair, her eyes full of love.
"But you can't let me hold you back forever. When you were brought home, you were wearing a gold necklace with a birthstone on it. I put that necklace inside the doll you've had since you were little. Isabella, you need to find your biological parents. Only then, even if I die later, can I truly rest in peace."
