Chapter 46 Treated like a queen
Evan's face flushed red. Her eyes sunk into their sockets. Then again she had to rethink if this was her own imagination.
“Haha, what do you mean?” she shot a question as though she didn't understand what the Duke said.
“That you're thinking is what I mean,”he replied, his voice low and deep.
“Haha, how do you know what I'm thinking? I am thinking absolutely nothing.”
“That's your business.”His fingers wrapped around his teacup, bringing it to his lips.
Evan sighed. She figured she should stop talking because the more she did, the deeper the trouble she’d land in. Staying silent was best.
“Hahaha,seems like you're talkative.”
“Zip it,”she snapped at the rabbit, making the Duke nearly choke.
She didn't intend to do that.Seeing the Duke's expression, Evan slapped her palms over her mouth.
“Haha,I was talking to myself.” Ezekiel shook his head at her words.
Placing the bloodtea back on the table, he asked,
“Why don't you tell me you're mentally unstable?”
“Huh?Is that supposed to be an insult?” she asked, her eyes rolling.
“No,it's a fact,” he clarified.
“Tsk,a fact?”
Ezekiel came to realize something. This girl wasn't scared of him, and she was a questioner. He could relate to this type of attitude but found it hard to pinpoint who exactly. He had a lot of stubborn cousins with attitudes similar to this.
Sighing,he got up from his chair.
“It's late.Tell the savants to show you to the guest room.” With that, he started walking away. Her eyes were glued to him in wonder. He walked ascending the stairs until he was no longer in view.
She diverted her gaze to the bloodtea. For some kind of reason, it had a very good flavor. Curious to know if it was truly blood in the cup, she looked around the area, making sure no one was looking. Then she started getting closer and closer. Then she remembered the bunny. She immediately restricted her moves, which was when a maid walked up to her.
“Oh, milady, you didn't even touch your fruit. I guess you're not hungry after all, haha,” the maid chuckled, making Evan tsk.
“Where are your manners?Don't you have respect?” The nerve of this savant to talk to her in such a manner, just because she was a human.
“If you think I'm at your class,it's fine,” she got up from her seat, getting closer to the savant girl.
“I can kill you in the blink of an eye to make you understand that we're not on the same level.”She stretched her neck as she whispered into the servant's ear.
“Your master won't be able to rescue you, dear, hehehe.” She restricted her face using one hand to caress the girl's messy hair.
“Now be good and show me to the guest room while you can go back to your cave, hmm?”
Evan used to know this one very well:Grace. While they were still kids, Grace was one of her bullies. Though the girl was just three years older than her, Evan was powerless and always at her mercy at that time. Sometimes Evan sat down and regretted why she was so foolish and innocent back here in the Donovan's mansion.
She remembered how she was tortured and became the spotlight when Mrs. Caviar died. She wished she had been more arrogant, brave, and powerful. She would've sent them to their grave earlier before that tragic night. And Ezekiel wouldn't have used her only for him almost being proposed to someone else. Just remembering that part made her heart ache.
The maid led her up the stairs to the second floor of the mansion,to the first room on the right side of the corridor. Evan watched the maid push it open.
“Milady, everything is well arranged. Have a peaceful night.”
“Wishing you the same, dear,” making sure to drag the syllable ‘dear,’ making the maid more irritated. The maid walked away, disappearing behind the door.
A bright smile formed on Evan's cheeks.
“Fabulous, this is what a queen truly deserves,” she walked into the room like a queen would.
“Hmm,indeed,” replied the bunny rabbit.
“Sometimes you act as if you're dead.”She removed it harshly and tossed it on the bed decorated with red roses.
“Uh!Should I interrupt you when you're talking to someone? They'll surely know something is off.”
“Hmm,so you're this brave, Mr. Brody,” Evan praised as she threw her body on one side of the bed.
“What did you think of me?I was always bra…” the rabbit tried to defend himself only to be interrupted.
“You were never brave.I guess staying inside this bunny rabbit makes you a bit sensible. Impressive.” She stood up from the bed, taking off her flat shoes.
“I need to take a hot shower.I hope that savant girl set up the bathtub for me or she'll get it hot, hehe,” Evan giggled.
“Look at you,who was once a maid,” the rabbit reminded.
“And now,I'm a queen!”
The rabbit immediately questioned that.
“Are you truly sure? The Duke clearly stated you are here to be a savant.” Evan picked up her flat shoes, aiming them hard at the rabbit.
“Ah!”he groaned.
“Know your place.I am your master.”
She walked towards the door, picking up her turban which she subconsciously threw while getting into the room due to excitement.
Walking back to the bed,she placed it on it. She went straight to the bathroom door. Seeing that everything was well arranged for her bath, a smile formed within. They even kept a night dress for her to change into.
The bath was warm and peaceful. After she was done, she put on the night dress. Though it was light, long, and colorless, it was still beautiful. She wore it and went back to the room.
As soon as she stepped into the room,
“WOW,you look so beautiful in that,” the bunny rabbit praised. Evan bit her button lips, picking up the rabbit and tossing it into a nearby basket meant for putting dirty clothes. After, she picked up her green dress, including her shoes and her turban, tossing them into the basket.
“What are you doing?” the rabbit asked, baffled.
“It's late, get some sleep.” She went on, blowing out the brightest candle in the room and tucking herself in.
…
The next morning, Ezekiel was already at the table having his breakfast. Evan joined him a few minutes later. She was served traditionally made noodles. To her, it was tasteless. Then again, she was only eating for fun. With every spoonful she took, she peeped to see the Duke's expression. For some kind of reason, Ezekiel loved her behavior.
He had already decided in his heart to keep her to himself.
All of a sudden, someone burst into the sitting room from the front door. Breathing loudly, his breath caught in his throat.
“Master Ezekiel!Master Ezekiel! We have some news about the savant girl Evan!” The councilman spoke, falling to his feet.
