Chapter 25 I'm sorry my pet
“It's magical? Wow, sweet,” she exclaimed, shaking her body in freedom. Who would've thought the useless pendant she had been wearing all this while could actually save her life one day? Her heart swelled with happiness. She was free of the chains, and she would be out of this place in no time.
But something happened that made the smile fall from her face. The pendant started glowing yellow.
“No, no, no! Don't do that. Don't glow now, please,” she pleaded, covering it with both hands. As if the pendant could hear her, it immediately stopped glowing. She was stunned.
“Can it hear me?” she thought. With precaution, she slowly curled toward the bars of the cell, placing the pendant on them. Though she wasn't hoping for much to happen, the entire bars faded to dust, and only sand poured down.
Evan was well pleased, happy to start walking away, when something came to her mind. This place was made of invisible bars as well. So she took the pendant, positioned her hands in the air, and moved gently.
Surprisingly, more dust faded from something invisible. “Ah! So you're the one that was supposed to kill me. Turns out you died first, haha.”
Evan's face was as bright as the sun, and her eyes sparkled like stars. She believed there were no more invisible bars, as the guards walked here with ease.
She passed corridor upon corridor. If she came across any locked bars, all she needed to do was place the pendant on them, and just like that, they would fade into pure dust.
The process was slow and gentle. There were many guards sleeping like bulldogs in the market. There was no need to get a light, as this place was lit up properly with candlelights. Finally, she was in the last corridor. This process alone had taken her more than three hours, and it would soon be dawn. Any more delay and she would be caught. She had to go now or never.
As soon as she was finally outside the mansion, someone screamed.
“Hey, you!” Evan's eyes widened. Instead of running from the man shouting, she ran towards him with confidence. When he was within her reach, she sent a solid kick straight into his manhood.
He fell on the floor, about to let out a loud groan, but was stopped by Evan. She didn't know where she got this courage from, but this was a life and death situation. He fell uselessly on the ground, and she placed her hand on his mouth, making sure nothing left his lips.
“Shut the fuck up,” she gritted through her teeth. She wanted to place the pendant but was unsure. She didn't want to kill someone. An idea came to her head from nowhere, and she immediately said it.
“Sleep, sleep.” And just like that, the councilman fell into a deep slumber. Evan was left dumbfounded. She was overwhelmed by her new power.
“Wow, wow,” she whispered. But she knew there was no time to be bewildered. With caution, she began making her next move.
She sneaked out of the council mansion’s premises just like that, like a skilled thief.
Now she was fully out of sight, into the deep night where black witches operate. It was more scary, more deadly. But surviving was more important. She couldn't sit idle and watch herself be killed.
Evan started moving, hoping she wouldn't come across any black witch. There were only trees in the dark forest. She had hope she would survive no matter the struggles, just like Mrs. Caviar had taught her.
One thing she was very certain of was that she wouldn't die now, no matter what. The further she walked, the faster dawn broke, and it was morning before she realized it. Thanks to the heavens, she hadn't come across any black witch. She was safe.
Now she had to find a place to live. That was what she needed to guarantee, and it was the most important thing. She might have escaped this night, but there were more deadly nights ahead. And there was no way in hell she would go to the Donovan's mansion.
…
“Mom, where are you sending me? What about you and Dad? I can't leave without you. I can't leave without Dad,” little Zeke cried out, his eyes rolling with tears of sorrow.
“My son, you are a total danger to society. You are a danger to yourself as well. I have to keep you safe, dear.”
“I feel safe with you, Mom.”
Ezekiel tried pleading further, even though he knew it was completely useless.
“Please go away, my son. Please.”
“Mom, no!” With that loud scream, Zeke jackknifed up from sleep, breathing heavily. He had dreamed about this same thing several times.
“Oh,” he sighed, rubbing his eyes. He got out of bed. It was still dark outside. He did his normal routine, walked down the stairs, and headed to Evan's room.
He stood there for hours, staring at the door as if it was his last hope of survival. He always did this subconsciously. After a few moments, his eyes flushed; he opened the door, stepping into the room gracefully.
The room was dull and empty. He walked towards the bed. Bending down, he took the bedsheets, bringing them to his nose; he inhaled the scent. It comforted him after his nightmares.
Next, he lay down on the bed, hugging it tightly. He himself didn't know why he was doing this, but it comforted his soul, and he couldn't help it.
The bunny noticed nothing, as it was deeply in its own slumber. The duke slept for two straight hours; waking up, he discovered it was already morning. He immediately went to his room.
When he got to his room, someone knocked on the main door of the mansion. Not waiting to be invited, the man pushed the door open.
“Master Ezekiel, Master Ezekiel!” The door burst open. The man’s breathing was heavy.
Seeing that it was a councilman, Ezekiel's brows knitted together.
“Speak,” he demanded.
“The girl, she has escaped.”
“What? What do you mean by escaped?”
