Chapter 240: He Didn't Miss?!
Chapter 240: He Didn't Miss?!
Jasper's POV:
"Hat jemand das Gesicht des Schützen gesehen?" (Did anyone see the shooter's face?)
I asked openly as I looked over my shoulder at Stefan and Miles sitting in the back seat as we pulled away from the intersection, leaving that man standing there watching us pull further away from him. He continued to glare at us from beneath his cap the entire time, even lowering his gun still in his hand to his side, until other vehicles blocked my view. Everyone was silent for a few moments as I collected my thoughts.
My body felt like it was on fire. I could still feel adrenaline coursing through my veins, which only seemed to intensify my rage as I did my best to stay calm while we kept driving away from the scene. The only thing that was left in the vehicle was a few of her dresses that I knew of, as Stefan made sure to grab his case. I knew I had other men heading there to pick up the disabled SUV so that it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. It all depended on who got there first.
When I turned back to the front, I looked down as my arms were still supporting Kelly Anne, one of which was under her left side, helping to keep her upright while she was still knocked out, lying across my lap with her head resting on my right shoulder. Her legs were between mine as I reached up to gently stroke the side of her face when I turned to look back.
As we kept driving down the road, several police cars headed in the opposite direction, their lights and sirens on as they sped past. This was too close, too close for my comfort. I didn't want to think about what might happen if they were better organized next time. At that moment, we all kept talking in German, knowing she wouldn't understand it anyway.
My other guards only spoke German, which made things easier for everyone, even if she were awake to hear what we were saying. However, I needed to get to the bottom of this as we headed back to The Hochburg.
"I did," Miles spoke up as the rest of us turned around to look at him as we waited for a response. "I could see him, although..."
"Did you happen to see who it was?" I asked, my tone deep and serious, though I cut him off a bit, not quite the intention I had.
"It was hard to tell, for the most part, but..." Miles said as he looked over at Stefan and then up at me. "I think it may have been her ex."
"You think, or you know?" Stefan asked, his tone just as serious as mine, but his statement showed he was not nearly as patient as I turned out to be at this particular moment.
Miles didn't exactly look at Stefan as to how he responded just now. All of my men, at least the six I have on hand daily, I consider quite close, knowing their limits on their patience and such. Stefan was usually the quietest of the group, but when it mattered, he was usually very straightforward in how he phrased things. I knew Miles had a lot going on, and Stefan was just confirming the details. Being a sharpshooter, you had to keep track of certain details. The last thing you want is to shoot the wrong person when it comes down to the final moment.
I turned to look back at Miles, hearing his silence as he still had his left hand draped around the underside of his right elbow at this point. I knew he was in some sort of pain, as he was making a definite attempt to help support his wounded arm just below his shoulder. The bleeding had slowed for now, but you could tell that his sleeve was half-soaked with blood. There was no doubt in my mind that he would definitely be needing stitches.
"Boss, it was a bit hard to tell as his hat was pulled low over his face," Miles finally managed to speak up this time as he was previously looking down at his lap, collecting his thoughts. "However, something about this doesn't sit right with me, if you can understand that."
"What could that be?" I asked, turning to look out the front for a moment before I turned back to look at Stefan and then looked back at Miles.
"I don't think he had the notion to be able to set something like this up." Miles finally said this time. "If you think about it, from all that we know about him and his usual character, do you honestly think he could have the ability to pull off such a stunt?"
"I'm inclined to agree with you," Stefan spoke up this time as I again turned around to face the front, only this time, I looked down at Kelly Anne still lying there helpless in my arms.
She didn't seem to be resting all that well. I could completely understand. After the week we have had, I knew this was definitely going to take a lot out of her. It was my job to keep her safe. I couldn't help the thought in the back of my mind that I had somehow failed at that, knowing all that happened today.
As I continued to study her face, I noticed that her expression wasn't what you would think it would be if somebody were lying there unconscious. When I studied her face in more detail, I noticed that her brows were furrowed, and she seemed as if her expression displayed that she was upset about something. Could it be that she was in pain? I was having a hard time understanding her particular expression.
"Boss!" The guard who was seated behind me called out this time, even though we had been conversing in German the entire time. I turned to look back over my shoulder, waiting for him to acknowledge that my attention had changed to him when he finally spoke again. However, this time, his tone seemed to be rather upset as he spoke hurriedly. "Are you injured?!"
As I was looking back over my shoulder, my gaze met with Stefan's as I had a questionable look on my face. The expression on his face changed as well to a more concerned look when he furrowed his brows at me. Before, his expression was one of frustration as we were trying to piece together what had happened with the mysterious shooter.
"I feel fine, why?" I asked as I continued looking back over my shoulder.
It was at that moment that the guard leaned forward in his seat and reached up to where he felt the material of my suit jacket on my right shoulder. "Boss, you're bleeding...!"
There was blood on his fingers as he rubbed them together. Sure enough, they were sticky with blood.
"You mean to say...." Miles said this time, looking to my opposite shoulder.
"He didn't miss?!" Stefan called out, his tone quite upset. "That bastard!"
