Chapter 239: We Are Leaving! Now!...

Chapter 239: We Are Leaving! Now!...
Jasper's POV:

I was not sure how to interpret her body language at that point. I knew that whoever she might be looking at couldn't be right there next to us. So whoever she might be looking at had to be across the street somewhere other than right there. Stefan was still standing right there behind me, making sure no one would try to shoot me in the back. After this, I would have to ensure that all my vehicles were fitted with vests in case of any other issues. However, getting out of here was my first priority.

I held onto her arms just below her shoulders and tightened my grip as I tried to regain her attention. No matter what I did, she simply wouldn't look at me. Someone or something else was grabbing all of her focus right now, and that in itself was starting to get under my skin. It wasn't until she uttered her next words that my blood ran cold. Her next two words were barely audible, but I could see the look of pure shock on her face. No, there was more to it than that. Who was she looking at? Suddenly, all the bright and stressed color drained from her face as she finally uttered her next words.

"It's him...!"

What did she say?! Kelly Anne was standing there. She was right in front of me, refusing to answer me, no matter what I did to try to get her to look at me. Nothing I did, short of calling out to her, worked. She seemed frozen in fear. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as the words she said sank in the deepest part of my mind. There is no way it could be who she thought it was. It just had to be the stress getting to her. Then again, I have seen that look before. I know what it generally means.

If we were going to get out of here, I would need her to focus on me and nothing else around us. I needed to do something to gain her attention first and foremost. Miles was still huddled there beside me on his knees. However, I do not think that Stefan saw what she was looking at as he was looking toward the shooters coming from the intersection when he spoke next.

"We've got to get out of here," Stefan said as I turned to look at him.

He had set the case down beside him as he again pulled his phone out of his pocket to check a message that came in again. He looked at it, then looked up at me, and nodded. That's when I turned to look at Kelly Anne, who seemed to be holding her breath. Why wasn't she breathing like normal? I was still trying to figure this out.

"Meine Liebe!" I lightly called out to her as I knew that my men were nearly here. "Meine Liebe?"

I kept calling to her, even going so far as to shake her shoulders with a bit more intensity as I had before, as I continued to call out to her. Still, she refused to look at me. I narrowed my brows with frustration. Never before has she not been able to look at me. Why is now of concern? However, the look of fear and shock didn't dissipate. It intensified with each passing second that she still didn't look at me. This look,... the look of complete and utter fear. I was willing to bet that she wasn't even aware that I was standing there directly in front of her right then.

This time, when I called out to her, I said her name to catch her attention before I spoke next. "Kelly Anne, can you hear me?"

When I called out her name, it wasn't said in a loud tone, but loud enough that you could hear me if you were paying attention. Right then, she opened up her mouth to speak, or so I thought. She let out her breath and gasped. I thought she was going to look at me, but instead, she closed her eyes. Why did she close her eyes?

"Warum antwortet sie nicht?" (Why is she not responding?) Stefan called out in that instance. "Was macht sie da?" (What is she doing?) Suddenly, I felt something in that instance as Kelly Anne went limp in my grasp. I quickly scooped her up in my arms, and at the same time, Stefan reached up and grabbed the top of my shoulder. "They're here!"

I quickly spun around to face the direction she was previously looking in. To my surprise, I was ever so thankful to see that one of my vehicles had pulled up, somehow blocking the view of whoever was on the other side of the intersection. You could still hear gunfire ringing out across the intersection as the man who was sitting in the front passenger seat got out, opened the back door, and stood by the tail end of the vehicle, using his body for cover as he ushered me over to the waiting vehicle.

I didn't wait a moment, contemplating the situation as I hurried toward the open door, while Stefan extended his hand to assist Miles and subsequently followed us. I seated myself in the front and carefully pulled Kelly Anne's limp body closer to my chest, ensuring her head rested on my right shoulder, just as Stefan arrived at my door to close it, given that my hands were occupied. He made sure to get Miles in the back as he climbed in next.

"Platz da drüben, auf der Fahrerseite befindet sich ein bewaffneter Angreifer," (Scoot over, we have an active shooter on the driver's side), the guard told Stefan as he approached the back side passenger door with his gun in hand, ready to shoot if they tried to come around.

I turned to look at Miles as he moved over, allowing Stefan room to place his long case in the back seat of the vehicle before climbing into the middle seat. Once space was available, the other guard climbed in to sit next to Stefan. The driver didn't hesitate as he pulled away from the intersection.

However, just as the vehicle started to roll, I looked at Miles's window. You could clearly see several bullet impressions on the exterior pane of glass. I leaned forward just a bit so I could get a look out the driver's window. Sure enough, there was someone standing there on the opposite side of the intersection. Whoever he was didn't look like anyone I knew. He was wearing a ball cap pulled low over his face, with nothing but a white T-shirt and holey jeans.

Could that have been her ex? He was holding a gun. His arm extended towards us, and his hand firmly gripped the handle. You could clearly see his finger repeatedly pressing on the trigger, even though he had already fired all his rounds at our vehicle. I narrowed my eyes at this man, who turned to look at us as we pulled away.
