Chapter 74
I was the one who caught it this time.
But what about next time?
No one can guarantee anything. The only thing we can do is for everyone to be more careful, so that when data gets maliciously tampered with, at least someone notices.
Everyone seemed to understand, and their expressions didn't look good.
"Alright, I caught it early. Just be more careful next time. At least we won the project, and that's a good thing. Let's continue with the celebration dinner tomorrow night. Everyone, arrange your schedules."
I tried to change my expression and soften my tone a bit.
Seemingly influenced by me, everyone finally relaxed.
Looking at them, I sighed.
What's done is done. We can only be vigilant, but if we really tried to hold someone accountable, there's no one specific to blame.
That evening at home, I was thinking in my room when someone suddenly knocked on the door. When I opened it, I saw Michael's smiling face.
He pushed his way in.
"What's wrong, Mr. Johnson?" I quickly asked.
Michael led me to the bed. "I just noticed you weren't very happy today. You should be happy about winning that project. Did someone bully you?"
Michael looked at me sincerely.
Hearing this, I sighed and told him about my troubles today. Michael didn't seem concerned at all.
"I'll personally attend tomorrow's celebration dinner. Besides that, Ms. Smith has been working diligently and has brought considerable profits to the company. I've decided to promote Ms. Smith to be our project department director. How does that sound?"
Michael was all smiles. This matter seemed like a small thing to him.
Looking at him, I couldn't help but say, "Mr. Johnson, are you trying to give me special treatment?"
Michael hugged me, his voice coming from behind my ear. "How could that be? Your work ability speaks for itself. Everyone can see that. This is a conclusion reached after discussion with the company's senior management. I'm just the messenger."
Naturally, I didn't think my abilities were lacking. I've never been someone who looks good but is useless.
After all, one of the reasons John cheated was that I was too busy with work to pay attention to him.
When Michael showed up at the celebration dinner, everyone in our team was already shocked.
When they learned I had jumped straight to becoming the company's project department director, everyone in the team clapped until their hands were numb.
I smiled and accepted.
At the celebration dinner, many colleagues came to toast me. After drinking too much, I felt a bit dizzy and walked out to the corridor to get some air.
I was looking at the night view when my phone rang.
It was Jane!
Seeing the caller's name, I frowned. Why would Jane be calling me at this time?
I answered the phone. Jane didn't say anything for a while.
I said directly, "Jane, if you're not going to talk, I'm hanging up."
"Nancy!"
She finally spoke, but when she called my name, she was gritting her teeth, as if she wanted to skin me alive.
I smiled and turned on the recording.
"You only won one project. The show has just begun. Do you really think you can stay this lucky forever?"
Hearing what she said, I frowned. "So what do you want to do?"
"Just you wait. I'll definitely give you a huge surprise!"
The call was disconnected. The cold wind blew, and I sobered up considerably.
Holding my phone, I started thinking about what Jane could do!
Michael came when I had just put away my phone.
"Mr. Johnson, perfect timing. Can you take me somewhere?"
Michael had brought a driver. He and I sat in the back seat together, and the driver quickly took us to the address I had tracked down - where Jane was when she called me.
It was an abandoned factory in the suburbs. Inside was only a phone that had made one call, along with some of my old belongings. I had no idea where Jane had found them.
Michael held my hand.
"Nancy, I will never let anything happen to you!"
Michael was very serious. I smiled helplessly.
"Okay, I trust you, Mr. Johnson!"
After returning, I started thinking about why my things would be in Jane's hands.
Unless...
Someone was working for Jane around me, and it's even possible that this person had been by my side since before my rebirth!
Thinking of this, I felt a chill down my spine.
Who could it be, and why was this person by my side?
The next day, I didn't go to work but went to see Lucy instead.
Lucy was at work. She found it strange when I came, but when she learned that someone had gotten hold of my old belongings, her expression changed, too.
"I thoroughly investigate everyone who gets close to you. How could this..."
"Mom, I have Michael by my side. I'm worried about you." I held Lucy's hand.
Lucy shook her head. "I will definitely investigate thoroughly to find out who dares to target my precious daughter!"
I came not only to tell Lucy about this, but also to get a list of people who had been around me before.
Servants, drivers, even old company employees - I wanted them all.
"Wait here. I'll have my assistant organize it right away."
While worried, Lucy also handled things very quickly. Before long, I had the list.
"I can't speak for others, but Tom is loyal enough. I'm worried about you, so take Tom to the Johnson Group. If anything happens in the future, with Tom there, I'll feel better!"
I could see Lucy's genuine concern. After my promotion, I needed an extra assistant.
I nodded.
When I first went to the Johnson Group, I started as a low-level employee, so I temporarily left Tom at the Smith Group.
Seeing me nod, Lucy nodded too.
"Alright, I'll arrange for Tom to join the Johnson Group. Don't worry, no matter what happens, Mom is here for you."
With Tom's help, investigating them was very convenient. Within a few days, I caught someone connected to the Ross family.
The housekeeper who was fired for protecting Susan had financial dealings with the Ross family even before being dismissed.
"Should we call the police?"
Tom asked with a stern face.
I shook my head. "He only took some money. There's no evidence of anything else. What good would calling the police do?"
I sat in my office chair, lost in thought.
How should I handle this matter?
I hadn't finished investigating when, to my surprise, Ella came.
I hadn't seen her in a long time. Watching her observe the Johnson Group after entering, I caught all the jealous and vicious expressions in her eyes.
I smiled.
Ella grabbed my hand, trying hard to make her expression look kind.
I calmly pulled my hand away, then heard Ella ask me, "You're not still mad at me, are you? What happened before was because I was immature and got fooled by Susan. But I know I was wrong. I came here to apologize to you!"
