Chapter 89 Growing the bonds of friendship
Aloria
The sun hangs low in the sky, casting a warm golden glow over the clearing just outside the pack house where River and I have set up for tonight's gathering. The air is alive with the scents of grilled meats and fresh herbs, mingling with the laughter and chatter of the guests. My heart swells with a mix of excitement and nerves as I step back to take in the scene we’ve created.
Tonight is about more than just strategy and alliances; it’s a chance to breathe, to connect with the Alphas in a way that feels more human and less… political. River’s idea to host a relaxed party was brilliant, and I can’t help but feel a sense of pride watching him move among our guests. He carries an air of confidence, an unspoken authority that draws the attention of everyone in the clearing.
“Aloria,” I hear a voice call, breaking me from my reverie. It’s Eldred, the silver-haired Alpha who always seems to have an insightful perspective. He approaches me with a cup in hand, his smile genuine. “This is quite the gathering you’ve orchestrated. It’s nice to see everyone outside of the tension of the council.”
I return his smile, feeling a warmth spread through me. “Thank you, Alpha Eldred. I wanted to remind everyone that we’re more than just our titles. We’re allies, friends… and families. It’s important we remember that, especially with what’s looming ahead.”
He nods, his expression thoughtful. “You have a wise head on your shoulders, Princess. Your father must be proud.”
I can’t help but chuckle. “He’s been supportive, but I think he’s just as proud of River’s leadership. They share a bond that runs deeper than I can fully understand.”
Eldred’s eyes twinkle with amusement. “Ah, young love. It can be quite the force, can’t it?”
Just then, I catch sight of River across the clearing, laughing with two other Alphas. His dark hair glints in the sunlight, and the way he carries himself… like he’s right where he belongs… makes my heart race. It’s as if he’s found a new rhythm to his life, and I can’t help but feel a part of that melody.
“Excuse me, Alpha Eldred,” I say, my voice a bit breathless. “I need to check on River.”
“Of course, my dear,” he replies with a knowing smile.
As I weave through the throng of guests, I feel the energy of the gathering; it buzzes with laughter, camaraderie, and the tantalizing hint of anticipation. I approach River just as he’s regaling our guests with a tale about his first encounter with a rogue wolf.
“… and I swear, it looked like a giant, furry freight train coming right at me,” he exclaims, his hands animatedly illustrating the scene. The Alphas howl with laughter, and I can’t help but join in, my heart soaring at his infectious spirit.
“Is that right?” I say, stepping in beside him, unable to resist teasing. “I thought you were the mighty Alpha, not some startled deer.”
River turns to me, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “Aloria! You just ruined my moment of glory.”
“Your moment of glory was already a train wreck,” I laugh, and he feigns offense, placing a hand over his heart.
The other Alphas chuckle, clearly enjoying our banter. I can feel the atmosphere shift, relaxing as they see us as more than just leaders, but as a couple, sharing moments of joy amid uncertainty.
“Join us, Luna Aloria,” one of the Alphas says, gesturing to the food spread across the tables, laden with platters of grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and fresh bread. “We need to hear more of these stories!”
I smile, glancing at River, who nods his encouragement. “Alright, let’s see if I can outdo River’s freight train story,” I say, stepping up to my newfound role as a storyteller.
The evening flows seamlessly as I share my own tales, weaving in humor and camaraderie. One of the Alphas talk about the time he tried to impress his father with his archery skills and ended up shooting an arrow into a tree that was far too high to reach. Laughter erupts, and I can see the tension dissipate like mist under the morning sun.
As the sun sinks lower, the sky igniting with hues of orange and pink, I catch River watching me, a look of pride etched on his face. The way he looks at me sends a rush of warmth through my veins, a reminder of the bond we share.
“Aloria,” he says, moving closer as the laughter subsides. “You have a gift for bringing people together.”
I shrug, feeling a blush creep up my cheeks. “I just wanted everyone to feel at home.”
“That’s exactly what you’ve done,” he replies, his voice soft but firm. “It’s not just the food or the stories; it’s you. You make everyone feel welcome.”
I can’t help but smile back at him, a sense of belonging washing over me. But just as quickly, I remember the stakes that lie ahead. “But we can’t forget why we’re here. We still have to prepare for what’s coming.”
“I know,” he replies, his expression turning serious. “But for tonight, we can enjoy this. We’ll face our challenges together, just like we always have.”
With a nod, I take his hand, feeling the familiar jolt of electricity as our fingers intertwine. It’s a reminder of the strength we draw from one another.
As the stars begin to twinkle overhead, I turn back to our guests, who chat and laugh, forging connections that will hopefully strengthen our packs. I can feel the undercurrents of unity weaving through the air as I watch River blend effortlessly into the crowd, making everyone feel seen and valued.
This is what we need right now… a chance to breathe, to connect, and to remind ourselves of the bonds that tie us together… what we have to fight for.
The evening stretches on, filled with laughter, stories, and a shared sense of purpose. I realize that no matter the storms on the horizon, we are not alone. Together, we will face whatever comes next, and we will do so as allies, friends, and perhaps even family.
