Kieran’s POV
“Do you have it?” I asked John once we were far enough from Jess that she would not hear or see us.
“Sure do” he chuckled as he handed me a black box that I quickly slid into my jacket pocket.
“We better get back to the others and the meeting” I chuckled as we followed everyone into the warehouse.
I could tell that Jess was on edge and when I looked around, I realised why. Everyone was giving her wary looks. I guess that in the time I was away, they still did not warm up to her gift. John had placed chairs on the stage for us, and we all walked up and took our places. Jess made sure to position herself in the middle and I knew it was not for the attention. She wanted to make sure that she was surrounded by her friends, and I could not blame her. Once we were sat, I took her hand in mine. As soon as we were seated John walked to the podium and started the meeting. He asked the question that we all wanted to know.
“I would like to call this meeting to order. As you are all aware the aliens tried to take the women of Christchurch a couple of days ago. Did anything odd occur in any other parts of the country while this was happening here?”
A guy from Auckland confirmed that they did not notice anything odd. This worried me, was this an isolated attack just on our city? Jess was not happy with this news and quickly went and stood beside John demanding to know how the hell no one knew that we were under attack. I agreed, they must have known when the whole city went radio silent. It made no sense that no one noticed, especially when I saw the men get killed just out of town here by the aliens.
“My name is Jeremy. I think that people are trying to cover up for their fuck ups. Excuse my language. I told my boss about a month ago about some strange activity. Something kept flicking on the screen and then flicking out again. To me it looked like something was trying out our borders to see how good our security was and if we would attack or at least go and look” finally a man spoke up.
I grinned at him as I knew without Jess having to ask what his bosses did. They brushed it under the carpet, even though everyone was supposed to be on high alert knowing that the aliens were coming back. I sat back as Jess and John took control of the meeting and organising a plan. We didn’t know if the Aliens would come back to finish with us, or if they might decide to head to another part of the country. Hell, they might even skip the South Island all together and attack up north. People raised their voices trying to be heard as a plan started to form.
It was agreed that we needed more focus this time and nothing was to be brushed off. Every small blip was to be reported back and investigated. We also needed more training as looking at the people in front of me they all looked weak and would not be able to survive in a fight. Finally, the meeting ended and I could not stop smiling. Now it was time for Jess’s surprise, and I could not wait. We sat and waited until everyone else had left the warehouse and then we made our way back outside, with Jess complaining about how hungry she was. I led her to a black van John had organised for me and opened the door for her and her friends and Romeo to climb into the back. Once they were seated, I closed the door and climbed into the passenger seat next to John. He winked at me as he set off, and I was so excited that I could not stop my leg from bouncing. Jess was not having any of it though and started asking where we were going. She would not give up, and I tried to act like I was frustrated with her for not listening to me when I kept telling her to just relax and have fun. I wanted her to enjoy tonight, the meeting was over, and a plan was in place. Now we had tonight before things turn to work and training. The conversation turned to Jess getting promoted and becoming my boss, that I did not mind until she mentioned that I would get special treatment. I started to get excited thinking about all the places I could fuck my, soon to be boss. Then she made a comment that was like I got dumped in cold water. She told John that I might not like the special treatment that she would give me. I had seen couples where one got promoted and became the others boss and some of them got a power trip out of belittling their partner. I hoped that Jess would not turn out like that, I thought she was better than that. Everyone else in the van was laughing finding the comment funny. Jess must have picked up on my moon as she leaned over and started to rub my shoulders. I knew it was her way of making me peace and easing my mind and it was working. She did not stop until we pulled up outside the community hall that John has organised for me. I have given him all the details via text message at any chance I got. I just hoped that Jess would like it and now I was about to find out. I climbed out of the van and opened the back door for everyone to get out. I let the others all go past us and into the hall while I held Jess back and pushed her so until her back was against the van.
