Jess’s POV
Romeo had a great time chasing the rabbits. He liked to tease them in to thinking that they could outrun him and then when they thought they had got away, he would go for it and get in front of them. Breaking their neck in one shake. After he had killed and ate his two rabbits we set of back to camp. Romeo walked sluggishly next to me full up after his big feed. When we got back to camp, I heard extra voices. They all seemed relaxed and to be having a good time, so I was not alarmed. I walked around the corner and stopped dead. Kieran and Agent Grahams were sat around the fire with my family.
“Sir” I called “it’s great to know that you’re ok. How did you find us?” I could not bring myself to acknowledge Kieran’s presence.
“We went by your house as we knew that it would be safe for a while with its location and when we saw that you had gone and that your van was there with your parent’s car, well with your training we knew that you would head for high ground, so we headed up and well here we are”
“Am glad you are here sir it felt odd giving orders”
“Why I always figured you to be a natural leader”
I blushed “Well since you’re here are you hungry? We have plenty of rabbit stew. Freshly killed about an hour ago”
“That would be great. Thank you, Jess,” Kieran smiled at me
I walked past him and started dishing out stew into bowls that my mum must have already got out while Romeo and I were out. Mum came over while I was dishing it out.
“I can hand these out for you sweetheart”
“Thank you, mum,” I handed her the first two bowls and watched her wander off and give them to Kieran and Grahams. She came back for the next two and I handed them over and then got up with the last two bowls. I handed mum hers and sat down next to Justin. Romeo Came and laid down next to me feeling my uneasiness.
We all ate in silence, and I hated that Kieran kept looking at me. I felt like he was looking to make sure that him leaving had not damaged me. As if. I was over him a long time ago. But it bugged me that he was here now. How long had he been back? It hurt that he had not bothered to get in contact to let me know that he was back. I felt tears come to my eyes and used everything in me to force them away.
“I am very proud of you by the way Jess”
“Thank you, Sir. But why are you proud of me?”
“Look around you. You managed to get your family out. You managed to get firearms and supplies to last you months”
“Justin helped me get the supplies”
“Yeah, I did Jess, but you told me to. I agree with your boss you did really well. You should be very proud of yourself. Hey, it’s your hunting skills that are providing us with meat”
“Call me John son”
“Hey, how long have I worked under you? And you have never once told me your first name”
“Well, these are not normal circumstances, and I would like you to call me John instead of Sir too please”
“Okay you’re the boss”
“Yes, and thank you for the stew, Jess”
“Thank you, sir, um sorry I mean John. I almost forgot my friends are meeting us here tomorrow at lunch time”
“That’s great the more heads we have trying to fight this thing the better”
“Where are the rest of the team?”
“We are the only ones left the smoke got the rest” John informed me
“But what about Justin and Bridget?”
“Justin and Bridget ran off together. They decided that this was a battle for the humans, and they were going to go in to hiding with their people” John grumbled
“But vampires and werewolf’s hate each other”
“Yes, and it looks like they have made a truce to protect their selves in this situation. They figure that when the aliens get what they came here for they will leave. Then they can have earth all to themselves. No more hiding”
“Makes sense in a wearied selfish kind of way”
“That’s the supernatural for you” Kieran grumbled
“No Kieran it’s not. In case you forgot my best friends include two witches and a vampire all of which are coming here to help us”
“Sorry I didn’t mean to offend you” he sighed
“Whatever. Has everyone finished? I will take the dishes to the creak and get them washed” I went and grabbed the dishes and went to the creak. Romeo did not like seeing me distressed so came with me. I was scrubbing the first dish when I heard footsteps behind me. I was not in the mood to talk to I carried on washing the dishes ignoring whoever was behind me.
“Jess, can we please talk?” Kieran sat down on the rock next to me.
“We don’t really have anything to talk about. You left and never once contacted me and now you’re back out of the blue and sat having dinner with my family”
“I know am sorry”
“When did you even get back?”
“The night the aliens decided to strike. Jess, please let me explain why I didn’t contact you”
“You might as well since we have no idea how long we are going to be stuck with each other”
“I didn’t contact you as I didn’t want to distract you. I wanted you to make the most of yourself. I would have just distracted you. I did keep asking John how you were doing though, and I was so proud of you”
“Wow thanks. You know I put in all of the hard work to make sure that you, the man who took my virginity and then left. Never once sending an email even to dump me would be proud of me”
“Am sorry Jess, I thought that I was doing the right thing. I am still in love with you Jess and I hate that you’re mad at me”
“Oh my god the whole I am still in love with you line. I am not the naive little schoolgirl that you left behind Kieran. That shit does not work on me”
“I was not trying to make anything work on you. God I was just telling you how I feel”
“I don’t want to know how you feel. All we are and all we will ever be, are colleagues. We have to work together to stop the Delica and her army. But that’s all”
“Ok if that’s all that we can be then I will be happy to at least get to work with you”
“Great you can start now and take these plates back to camp”
“Sure” He took the bowls off me and walked away without looking back.
