Chapter 42 Chapter 42
Kieran’s POV
I woke up in the morning and started to cook some oats for us for breakfast “I wish we had raided a store before we left” I groaned as I dished out the lumpy mess that would be our breakfast.
“Once we catch up with Jess, we can make a proper camp and hunt some meat” John told me as he started to eat his oats “We just need to eat a quick meal for now”
I had to agree with him, the sooner we got to Jess the sooner we could work together to come up with a plan. I pulled out my tablet to see if I could track where Delica and her people might be holding the humans. I was using the satellites so that I could not be tracked. I knew that our satellites were too encrypted for them to get into.
“Found anything?” John asked as he started to clean our dishes and pack everything away.
“I am not sure” I sighed “They are doing a good job of hiding. We need Jess, her gift is the only thing that could help us with this war”
“That’s why I sent you away” John smirked “With out you to distract her she grew stronger”
“I suppose we all have to make sacrifices for the greater good” I grunted as I helped him finish packing everything up.
“She will forgive you” he told me
“At least one of us thinks so” I sighed as I put my pack on and started to carry on up the hill. We stopped for a quick lunch and then carried on. After a couple of hours, I started to smell something delicious “Fuck that smells good” I groaned as my stomach started to rumble.
“Way better than the spaghetti we had for lunch” John agreed
“Do you think its Jess?” I asked
“If not, its other humans and they might be able to team up with us and help us with this war”
“That’s true”
Since we smelt the food, it gave us an extra burst of energy. I think we both realised that we needed to get to the persons camp before night fall. One so we could hopefully eat with them and, two so they did not freak out about people approaching their camp with it was dark. We reached a clearing and spotted Jess’s family sat around a fire talking. I looked around, but I could not see Jess anywhere. My heart felt heavy as we walked forward.
“Is Jess with you?” John asked as he walked forward
“Oh” Alice gasped as she noticed us “She went out with Romeo to catch some rabbits. I am sure she will be back soon”
I felt nervous wondering how she would react when she came back and saw me.
“Why don’t you come and sit down with us while we wait?” Alice asked “She won’t be too long as the stew is almost ready”
“Is that what we could smell walking up the hill?” John asked with a grin “It smells delicious and made both out belly’s rumble”
Suddenly I heard her voice call out to John. She was stood at the edge of the clearing with her dog who was stood beside her looking at me with his head cocked to the side. She looked amazing and had grown into a stunning woman. I wanted to get up and pull her into my arms, but I was still not sure how she would welcome me after ten years of no contact. I watched her talk with John while not even looking at me. It was not till she asked if we would like some rabbit stew that I decided to speak up, telling her that would be great and smiling at her. I am not sure what I expected, maybe a small smile back. But she didn’t say a word, she just walked past me and started to fill up some bowls with stew. Alice stood up and gave me a sad smile before following her. She took a couple of bowls and brought them straight to me and John. At least she fed me too and did not decide to let me starve out of spite. We all ate in silence, but I could not take my eyes off Jess. I missed her so much and I just needed a small sign from her to let me know that she missed me too. All I was getting was the cold shoulder and treated like I was not even here. I think this was worse than having her yell and scream at me for leaving her and not contacting her.
John started to make conversation telling Jess how proud he was of her. I had to agree with him, this camp was a good set up. She had cooking supplies and weapons to hunt and the fire we were all sat around was a nice touch. It turns out that Hayley, Amber and Christina were on their way. They would be a great addition to our team. Jess started to ask about the rest of our team and then about James and Bridget. Then I had to go and put my foot in it by implying that the supernatural are all selfish. Jess finally yelled at me before grabbing everyone’s dishes and taking them to the creek to wash them. Her dog followed her, and I was glad that he was a good dog who seemed to love her. I didn’t say a word as I got up and followed her. I could not leave things like this, we needed to talk. I found her crouched down by the creek with her dog laid beside her. She did not even turn around as I walked up to her and sat down on the rock beside her.
“Jess, can we please talk?” I asked her
“We don’t really have anything to talk about. You left and never once contacted me and now you’re back out of the blue and sat having dinner with my family” she spoke with no emotion in her voice, and I had to hold back the tears. Was she really over me, when she was all, I had been able to think about for the last ten years.
“I know am sorry”
“When did you even get back?” she snapped and I was relieved, anger meant emotion and a small glimmer of hope.
“The night the aliens decided to strike. Jess, please let me explain why I didn’t contact you” I had to tell her that I didn’t have choice, that I was just following orders.
“You might as well since we have no idea how long we are going to be stuck with each other” she grumbled as she finally turned to look at me.
