Chapter 39 Chapter 39
Jess’s POV
My friends were safe and coming to me. I knew that with their help we had a better chance of fighting Delica and her crew.
“Ok, was that the real Christina?” My poor mother looked scared to death
“Yes, it was. She was in a cafe with Amber and Hayley when the building got smoked out but it had no effect on them”
“Why would it not affect them?”
“Well, I am guessing that it only works on normal humans. They are not normal in fact Hayley is not even human. Did you not listen to my story? My god Justin sometimes I wonder why I bother with you you’re so self-involved”
“Sorry I didn’t think” Justin walked away and started to make a fire without looking back at me
“Ok I am going to go and see what I can of what is happening in town. We are going to camp here for 24 hours at least as that is when my friends will get here and then we can all plan what we are going to do” I walked away feeling guilty at yelling at Justin like that he didn’t mean any harm I was just not used to dealing with people who had no idea about what went on in the dark corners of our existence. I got to the edge of the cliff and looked down all that I could see was smoke. There were no streetlights on. No house lights nothing everything was dead apart from the smoke that was coming out of every building.
I started thinking about Kieran. I had not thought about him in so long, but since I had told my story to my family, he was the only thing that I had been thinking about. I felt stupid for still having feelings for him. I was just a child when we met. I had no idea about love and relationships. I could not blame him for doing a runner, but I never did understand why he went through all of the trouble to say goodbye. He could have just left. I sat down on a rock and started to cry. I don’t think that I would ever understand why he did all the things that he did. While I was crying mum came and sat with me and put her arm around me.
“You may be all grown up and know a hell of a lot more than me, but I am still your mum and I will always be here when you need a shoulder to cry on”
“Tthhaaanks mum” I managed to stammer out between sobs.
“And thank you”
“For what?”
“For getting us out of there. For helping us and taking charge”
“You’re my family. How could I have left you behind?”
To emphasise the point Romeo jumped up on mum’s lap and gave her hand a lick
“Yes, I love you too Romeo and we all know that your mum would never leave you behind”
Just then I remember agent Grahams “My god. I must ring Grahams” I flipped my phone number and pushed the speed dial. The phone went straight to his voice mail. “That’s very odd”
“What hun?”
“His phone went straight to voice mail?”
“So maybe he left t at home when he ran off?”
“No, we have had it drilled into us that these phones never get turned off and they never leave our person. We have to bloody sleep and shower with them for God sake. He is my boss he would never turn his phone off. Shit something must have happened to him. Damn it” I started to cry again.
“Maybe he was on another call?”
“No, these lines have call waiting”
“Out of coverage?”
“No theses phone get signal everywhere and I mean everywhere”
“Thanks for trying to cheer me up mum but no. The only way that it would go to voicemail is if the phone was off. The only way Grahams would turn the phone off was if shit” I flipped my phone open and pushed another speed dial.
“Hayley it’s me. Turn the phone off now they can trace us through them” I hung up before she could say anything and turned my phone off.
“What was that about?”
“If something had happened to Grahams his phone would still be on. The only reason he would turn it off is if it was unsafe to have it on. The only way that in this situation that it would be unsafe to have the phone on would be if they could trace our location through our phones”
“I am so proud of you”
“What?”
“I would never have thought of any of this you’re really smart and I am proud of you”
I scooted over and pushed Romeo off mum’s lap so that I could take his place. We sat like that for a while until Justin came over
“I hate to interrupt the mother daughter bonding thing but there are two males here who really need some food”
Mum and I both laughed as we got up and walked back to camp with Romeo walking right at my heels. We ate the last of the bread rolls with some tined soup.
“Well, that’s the last of the bread so now we are on noodles and tined food”
“So little sis, what are we going to do now?”
“Hang out until lunch time tomorrow and then plan what to do next when Hayley, Christina and Amber arrive”
“Ok sounds good” He reached into his bag and pulled out a soccer ball “I found this at the supermarket and thought that we could all use a bit of fun. So, who is up for a game?” Romeo got in to play mode as soon as he saw the ball and went running about 5 meters away and then he stopped his arse went in the air and his head went down by his paws, and he waited never taking his eyes of Justin.
“Do you want to play boy?” Justin kicked the ball to him and Romeo ran up to the ball and hit it back with his snout.
“That must have been a fluke ay boy” Justin kicked the ball again and Romeo hit it back to him again.
“Wow he hits it back this is fun” Mum and dad came and sat on either side of me and we watched Justin kicking the ball to Romeo.
“Who do you think will get tired first” Mum asked
“Justin” Dad replied without even thinking about it.
We all started laughing
“What are you all laughing at?”
“Nothing” Mum and dad said together what set them off in another burst of hysterics.
