Chapter 40 Chapter 40
Kieran’s POV
We grabbed a couple of survival packs and some weapons before we set of towards Jess’s place with Grahams leading the way. “How long do you think it will take us to get there on foot?” I asked, “I am sure we would be fine to drive” As much as I knew Jess would not want to see me, I was still excited about seeing her.
“I don’t want to risk it” he sighed “And since most of the department is under the aliens control you might as well call me John”
I looked at him in shock “But you are still my boss”
“Right now, we are just a team and hopefully Jess is also still ok”
“The alien smoke might not even work on her with her gift” I told him “Do we know if it worked on the supernatural?”
“I don’t think so” John sighed “So I am hoping that Amber, Hayley and Christina managed to get to Jess too”
We carried on walking and a few hours later we arrived at Jess’s house. We spotted her Kombi, and another car was parked beside it. “Whose car is that?” I asked suddenly feeling jealous that she might have a guy over”
“Relax” John chuckled “It belongs to her parents. Jess has not dated anyone since you, she has not even shown any interest in anyone else”
“I still love her” I sighed “The only thing that has kept me going these last ten years is the fact that I get to come back and see her again. Even if she has moved on and does not want me anymore”
“If I am being honest with you” John sighed “I don’t think she is over you, she just does not want to admit it to herself. She stopped asking about you and I think it was to save herself pain rather than because she no longer cared”
I hoped he was right. I walked up to the door and knocked.
“If she was home Romeo would have come running out barking” John muttered as he opened the door and walked in.
“Are you sure we should just walk into her house when she is not home?” I asked as I stood at the door.
“I need to see if she came back. If she did and she took her supplies with her then we know she is fine, and we need to go meet her”
He had a point, so I followed him in. Her house was nice and clean, I looked around, and all her pictures were of her friends, family and a border collie that I was assuming was Romeo.
“I think she had taken her family and fled to the hills” John told me as he came to stand next to me. She has taken her emergency supplies”
“How do you know she will have gone to the hills?” I asked
“Because she will have an elevated view to see what is going on” he chuckled “It’s where I would go”
He was right, if I wanted to get somewhere safe it’s where I would go too. “Ok, let’s go” I told him
“She had a head start, so it will take us over a day to reach her” John warned me
“And even when we do reach her, she might not want to talk to me” I sighed getting what he was saying. I needed to take the next day to sort my head out and be ready for her rejection. I had gone radio silent on her after I left her outside her house. Ignoring her calls and messages has been hard as Hell. But I had been given an order as I had to follow it, if I was her, I would want nothing to do with me either. I just hoped that she would believe that I was just following orders.
“Don’t worry” John chuckled “I will tell her that I was the one who sent you away and told you not to contact her” He told me “Hopefully if she knows it was me who issued the order, she might go easy on you”
“Right now, I think we need to focus more on how we are going to defeat Delica when we don’t have any agents left. If we do find Jess, then it will only be the three of us who are trained in fighting”
“I would not be surprised if Jess has not started training her parents and brother” John chuckled
“Even if she has, they will not be at a high enough level to go up against Delica. That smoke they used brainwashed people instantly. It must be a new weapon they created as Jess did not mention anything about it”
“I was thinking the same thing, it seems that they were working harder than we thought in the last ten years. I thought with our satellites we would be safe, but they got past them all. Do you know how?”
“They managed to block the signal” I told him. I showed him my tablet that showed them going past the satellite. The camera picked that up, but the sensor didn’t. “I was driving here at the time, so I was not watching. I checked the security for the offices, and the officers were all fucking around so none of them noticed the spaceship approach”
“Where are the officers now?” growled
“The offices were the first place the aliens targeted” I told him “But they didn’t use the smoke, they wanted to send us a message” I showed him another video of our men getting slaughtered while Delica stood in the background smiling.
“They had one fucking job” John yelled “To watch the screens, purely for the reason of if the sensor failed”
“Well, they paid the price for failing to do their job” I told him “Look it’s starting to get dark, how about we camp here for the night and carry on in the morning”
“I thought you would have wanted to keep going” he grunted as he set his pack down under a tree.
“I want to see her again when I have a clear head, that is not going to happen if I push myself and don’t rest”
