Chapter 17
Shortly after we left, the rogue boy was taken to the pack dungeons and put into a solitary cell so he wouldn’t hurt anyone while the drug was leaving his system. Although we don’t know how long that’ll be, as we don’t know when he was injected or how much he was given. To say I was afraid would be an understatement. I’m terrified, I felt as though there was no place I could go to be safe. Nowhere for me to go so that everybody could be safe.
“How are we supposed to keep everyone safe if we don’t know who the threat is or what they want?” I asked Jackson as we were walking to the kitchen to get food.
“First we figure out as much as we can about the person behind this. We take a look at the psychology behind their decisions.” He answered.
“How do we do that?”
“Well we know they’re using Scopolamine as a means to get other people to do their dirty work. This means that they are probably taking the people they’re injecting by surprise. They might be small in stature and or physically incapable of winning in one-on-one combat.”
I nodded silently as he explained. Hearing this both comforted me because it seemed like we knew more than I thought, and it also made me more worried because while it sounded like if we got close enough we could take them, it seemed as though they were smart enough to make sure that that wouldn’t happen. At least not before they wanted to.
“All in all they’re smart. They know their weaknesses and were smart enough to figure out a way around them whilst still going after their overall goal. Plus we have suspects as to who they are, so all we need is a plan to draw them out and reveal themselves. Along with whatever information that rogue has once the drug is out of his system. I know it may seem as though we have nothing but we have more than you think.”
Just as I was about to respond someone ran up to us in a panic.
“Alpha! We have another breach in our perimeters!” A girl said breathing hard.
“How many?” He asked.
“Unclear at this point but we’ve captured 5 already.”
“Okay, gather the pack warriors then make sure that the remaining women and children are safe.” Jackson said and sent the girl on her way to follow the orders given to her.
“What should I do?” I asked.
“Since you could very well be their target, you should stay with the children. Help keep them calm and safe along with yourself. I’ll see you afterwards okay?” He said, giving me a quick kiss on the head before running off to help.
I quickly ran around to help gather the children and escorted them to the shelter. Anyone could see the fear in their little eyes even though they tried to be brave. The other adults that were with me tried their best to reassure the kids that everything would be fine but the sounds of grunts crashes and groans of pain didn’t help put anyone at ease.
“I think I have an idea on how to distract them.” I signed tapping a woman on her shoulder hoping she knew sign language.
“I’m willing to try almost anything right now. I hate seeing them so scared.” She responded.
Oh thank god.
Oh thank god! I thought as relief passed through me. I quickly found the sidewalk chalk that I’d seen while I was looking around and handed it to her.
“Let them draw and make this place colorful. Not only will it help keep their mind off what’s happening but when they’re surrounded by all the bright colors it might make the place more welcoming to them and less scary.”
“That’s a great idea Luna!” She responded excitedly I gave her a small smile in return and started to pass out chalk to each child. And almost immediately you could see their excitement fill their expressions. With that, the children decorated the shelter one chalk drawing at a time and by the time the battle was over you could barely find a spot that wasn’t covered. But the children were happy and at ease and that was what was important.
All of a sudden the doors opened and everyone froze for a moment, unsure as to whether the person on the other side was friend or foe. However soon our worries were put to rest when Jackson’s voice called out saying that it was safe. We adults exited first just in case before letting the children run free. Jackson was by my side in an instant and besides a few scrapes and bruises he was relatively unharmed for which I was grateful.
“Do we know what happened?” I asked.
“Not completely. However it seems as though they were more drugged minions.”
“This is getting out of hand! How could they be able to attack again so soon and with so many people!?”
"We don’t know but we’ll figure it out I swear."
