Chapter 15

I nodded in response and reluctantly let go of Miss Mary. I was worried sick for her, with some psycho injecting mind control drugs into people. We don’t know if they’re gonna target Christian again or if they have some kind of bigger agenda that we don’t know about. I honestly wanted to take everyone with us, but we can’t do that until we know that whoever is doing this isn’t a part of our pack. Jackson still doesn’t trust Christian; he says that Christian could still be the culprit. He says that he could have seen that his plan had failed so he injected himself in order to fake his innocence until he can try again. That’s why Jackson is taking Christian with us so he can make sure that he won't try anything.

If I’m being totally honest I don’t fully trust Christian either. I mean who would? He, for lack of a better word, kidnapped me and almost assaulted me. No one can go back to normal so soon after that, if at all. I also think Christian could feel the hesitation in our few interactions. As much as I knew it bothered him, he didn’t dare say anything. He probably didn’t think that he had the right, considering what had happened. So you can imagine the deafening silence that filled the truck as we made our way to Jackson’s pack. The longer it went on, the more I had the urge to scream in frustration, then the fact that I physically can’t do that made the urge stronger.

“Leana? You okay?” I heard Jackson ask.

“Are you mad that you can’t scream in frustration again?” Christian asked, in a knowing voice.

I just nodded whilst glaring out the window.

“Wait which question are you answering?” Jackson asked, sounding so confused.

I just pointed back to Christian before crossing my arms again.

“Ah.” They both said in unison.

“Why do you want to scream?” Christian asked, leaning closer in order to see my response.

“This deafening silence is killing me. I can’t stop it, so it's up to you two to save me from going insane.” I replied, trying to show just how irritated I was through my hands.

“I’m sorry, but what do you want me to talk to him about?” Jackson asked, looking at me with a mixture of disbelief and disgust towards the potential enemy in the back seat.

“Anything! I don’t care at this point, just please put an end to the silence before I lose my mind!”

“Okay, okay...” Jackson said, “So Christian, are you secretly in love with my mate?”

Immediately I slapped his arm.

“Ow! What? You said talk to him!?”

“Do you not have a filter!? You can’t just ask that!” I responded, while Christian just sat back looking shell shocked and awkward.

“Why not? I’m just curious.”

“Oh my god. Are we almost there?”

“Yeah, we’ll be arriving in a few minutes.”

“Thank god.”

This time when silence washed over us I was grateful. I could wait a few minutes until I was free from the confines of the truck, and I can hide out in the room I’ll be staying in—and hopefully avoid any more awkward silences. I can’t stand them, because I literally can’t do anything to break them.

“And here we are.” Jackson announced as he parked.

As soon as I was able to, I jumped out and took a nice deep breath of air.

“Damn was the ride here really that bad?” Jackson asked, coming up and placing a hand on my shoulder, in what I’m assuming was a way to comfort me.

“Dude, it was torturous for me.” Christian replied as he got out of the truck and approached us.

He lifted his hand and reached for me. I flinched as he came in contact with my other shoulder. Immediately Jackson shoved him off of me and pinned him to the truck.

“Touch her again and you won’t live to see another day, do you understand me?”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Letting Christian go, Jackson came back to me and led me back to the pack house.

“I’ll have some people come and get your stuff, but for now I don’t want you anywhere near him.”

All I could do was nod and follow, because I too didn’t want to be around him. Or anyone really. A lot has happened in such a short period of time and I didn’t get the chance to fully process it. I fear that once I do, I’ll cause more problems. Especially because I don’t have anyone to talk to, even though he’s my mate. I don’t really know Jackson all that well, and my best friend is the reason I need to talk in the first place. Thinking about it now, Jackson and I are moving really fast. We just met not that long ago, and already I’m moving packs and leaving behind everything I’ve ever known so that I can be with him. Not to mention the whole bet thing, I still can’t stop thinking about that. What if he’s lying to me? What if I can’t trust him? I ask those questions about Christian too. Jackson was right. Christian could be lying to try to get to me again. There might not be anyone else injecting that drug, he could have done it himself. That thought alone terrifies me.

“Will you be okay sharing a room with me? Until we know if Christian is telling the truth, I don’t feel comfortable not having you next to me for extended periods of time. I’ll have an extra bed brought in so you’ll be more comfortable. I understand that you probably want your own area, given what happened.” Jackson’s rambling interrupted my thoughts.

“Thank you for understanding, if another bed is brought it I’m fine with it. I don’t really want to risk sleeping alone right now.”

“Don’t worry about it. You’re my mate, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure you’re comfortable and happy.”

Hearing that, I couldn’t stop the smile that made its way to my face. I feel so lucky to have someone like him be my mate. I don’t think I’ll ever stop being grateful to him.
