Chapter 58: In Flames

Magnus

Desperation had driven me to search for any hint that would lead me back to Miranda and Melany. Patrick and Hannah became my allies, sharing my desire to reunite our family. We had no time to lose, so we devised a risky plan to get the information we needed.

“Hannah, can you try to infiltrate Richard’s network of contacts? We need to know if there’s any clue about where Miranda and Melany are,” I asked her, aware of Hannah’s cunning and skills to move in the shadows.

She nodded as if this was the simplest thing in the world.

“I will, Magnus. I won’t get caught and I’ll look for any trace that leads us to them, stay calm, you’re working with the best.”

“I have no doubt about that.”

Patrick, always efficient in security matters, contributed his perspective.

“We can track Richard’s last known locations. If we manage to identify a pattern, we could anticipate his movements.”

“Let’s do it. We can’t afford to leave anything to chance. Every minute counts,” I affirmed, feeling the urgency take hold of me.

As we coordinated our efforts, a glimmer of hope emerged in my thoughts. I knew that this time we were closer, that I wouldn’t rest until I had my family safe again. At the end of our meeting, gathering all the information we could gather, we shared our progress.

“Magnus, trust us. We will find Miranda and Melany, we already have information that can help us.”

“I know. And when we do, nothing will separate us again.” I tried to stay optimistic this time, something told me that things would be different, that I really had a chance and I would cling to it as much as I could.

Patrick, Hannah, and I cautiously advanced towards the place that Hannah had identified as Richard’s hideout. My steps echoed in the tense silence of the night.

“Are you sure it’s here, Hannah?” I tried to contain my excitement.

“Yes, this is the place. Melany is in here, I know it,” she assured over the intercom.

I hope she’s not mistaken this time. Patrick was guiding us through the security of the place with his expertise, both us and the new rescue group that already had clear indications of where to start looking.

Upon arriving at the room where they were supposed to be, anticipation took hold of me. But when we opened the door, we didn’t find Miranda.

“Melany!” I called softly, searching for my daughter in the dim light.

The nanny, who had joined our mission, stepped forward and indicated with her gaze a small figure huddled in a corner. It was Melany, scared but unharmed.

“Melany!” I exclaimed, running towards her and hugging her tightly. Being able to see her precious eyes again only filled my heart with happiness, even though I knew I was missing one thing, to have Miranda with me too.

I looked around, desperate to find her. That’s when Hannah, with a somber expression, informed us of something new.

“Magnus, I haven’t found Miranda anywhere. It seems Richard took her before we arrived.”

The news hit me like a punch in the stomach. The possibility of losing Miranda again terrified me. However, I couldn’t afford to fall into despair. I took a deep breath and looked at Melany.

“Melany, sweetheart, you’ll be safe.” I handed her over to Patrick, who was keeping an eye on his surroundings. “Protect my daughter, will you?”

“But…”

“But nothing, keep her safe because it’s time for me to protect myself. It’s an order, Patrick, I want Melany alive.”

“Of course.”

The next phase of our fight to recover the love of my life was just beginning, and this time there would be no room for defeat. The good news is that I had a great lead, although despair was taking over me knowing that Richard had taken Miranda to a warehouse, apparently on fire.

I knew we couldn’t waste time. Patrick and I headed towards the place, leaving Hannah taking care of Melany.

“I have no choice but to entrust you with my daughter’s life, make sure I don’t regret it.”

“Go save Miranda, I’ll be here with your daughter when you come back.”

As we advanced outside, the glow of the fire intensified, and the scorching heat became evident.

“We’re getting there, Miranda. Hang on,” I murmured to myself, feeling the adrenaline coursing through my veins.

As we approached the warehouse, the flames roared with fury, but there was no trace of movement. I feared the worst, but my heart clung to hope. Patrick and I looked for a safe entrance and finally found a side door that was not completely engulfed in flames.

“Let’s go, Magnus. We have to find her,” said Patrick, sharing my concern.

Upon entering, the thick smoke made visibility difficult. The warehouse was full of boxes and objects, and the heat was suffocating. Suddenly, among the haze of smoke, I saw Miranda’s figure.

She was tied up, coughing from the smoke, but she was alive.

“Miranda!” I shouted, running towards her. Before I could reach her, a dark figure emerged from the shadows. It was Richard, with a ruthless expression on his face.

“Do you think you can take everything from me, Magnus? This time, I won’t let you win,” he held a flashlight that illuminated his malicious smile.

Patrick stepped between us, ready to defend me. The confrontation was becoming more intense with each passing second.

“Richard, this leads to no good. Let Miranda and I move on with our lives,” I pleaded, seeking a peaceful solution.

“Oh, Magnus, you have no idea what you’re about to lose,” he slid his hand into a pocket where the handle of a knife shone.

The atmosphere charged with tension. I knew that this time I could not afford to be defeated. I looked at Miranda, who, despite the situation, urged me with her gaze to protect our family.

The confrontation with Richard became more aggressive, I only had one thing in mind: someone has to die today. In the middle of the burning warehouse, we all fought for our lives. Richard was a formidable opponent, but this time, the determination and desire to protect Miranda and our daughter gave me the strength to overcome him.

“Enough is enough, Richard!” I shouted, dodging one of his attacks and responding with a precise blow that made him retreat. It was then that, in a moment of distraction on Richard’s part, I made a decisive move.

I disarmed him and threw him to the ground, ending up on top of him, feeling the scorching heat.

“This is over, Richard. I won’t let you hurt anyone else,” I declared, resisting the urge to give in to the anger bubbling inside me. Just when I thought victory was assured, the fire spread even more, fueled by the flammable materials in the warehouse.

The structure began to give way, and I knew we had no time to lose. I looked around, searching for Miranda amidst the confusion and chaos. I found her unconscious, but miraculously unharmed given the circumstances. I carefully lifted her into my arms, taking her out of the warehouse before the structure completely collapsed.

The heat and intensity of the fire increased as we moved away, and the rumble of the collapsing warehouse echoed in the air.

“Come on, Miranda. Wake up. We’re safe. We made it, love,” I whispered, feeling a knot in my stomach as I carried her to a safe place.

As we moved away, the smoke slowly dissipated, revealing the destruction left behind. The warehouse was ablaze, consuming Richard at the same time. Our family had been through a lot, and now, more than ever, we needed to cling to hope.
