Chapter 59: Perfect
Miranda
I opened my eyes slowly, feeling a diffuse haze gradually dissipating. The hospital light filtered through the curtains, and the constant sound of machines created a strange atmosphere.
My senses sharpened, and that’s when I saw him: Magnus, by my side, his gaze filled with relief and concern.
“Magnus…” I whispered, my voice trembling and weak. A wave of emotions enveloped me as I saw him.
It must be a joke, some twisted game of Richard’s, I had been through this kind of thing before and I didn’t want to be disappointed again when I realized the reality.
“I’m here,” he tried to approach, but I stopped him.
“Go away, I don’t want to see you,” he seemed confused, “Are you spying on me, Richard? Your game won’t work this time. You’re a coward!” I shouted as loud as I could.
Richard had done it before, playing with me and my mind, making me believe that Magnus was coming to rescue me, but that moment never came, the most worrying thing is that I didn’t have my little one with me.
“Listen,” I could perceive that his voice was breaking a little, “I don’t know what you had to live through this month to survive with a mind as twisted as Richard’s, but I swear this is real, that I’m here with you and that I love you.”
I felt as if my heart was about to explode just thinking about the possibility that this could work, that it was real.
“You really are here,” I spoke still unable to believe it.
“I’m here for you,” he approached me, but something didn’t add up.
“I love you, you know it and you can’t imagine how happy it makes me to have you with me, but where is Melany?” I searched desperately with my gaze, but I couldn’t see our daughter.
Panic began to take over me as I tried to sit up, only to realize that I was connected to several machines that were buzzing around me.
“Calm down, Miranda. You’re safe. Melany is fine,” Magnus said, trying to reassure me, but the worry persisted in his eyes.
I couldn’t believe that it was all over. The reality of the situation was slowly sinking into my mind. I also didn’t know where we stood, does this mean that Richard will no longer be in our lives?
My heart was pounding, and tears threatened to emerge in my eyes.
“Really? Is it all over?” I asked, my voice trembling. Magnus nodded with a serene smile.
“It’s over. Hannah is taking care of Melany. They’re both fine.” Although my heart calmed down at hearing those words, the anguish persisted.
I tried to get up from the bed, but my body didn’t respond as I wanted.
“I need to see them, Magnus. I need to hold them to know that this is not a dream.” He approached carefully and took my hand, conveying security with his touch.
“I’ll take you to them as soon as the doctors allow it. But first, you need to recover. You’ve been through a lot.”
I nodded, resigned to the reality that I had to allow myself to heal before hugging my daughter. Although my mind was clouded by fatigue and trauma, the comforting presence of Magnus assured me that we were together, facing what was coming, step by step.
Maybe not everything was lost after all.
After what seemed like an eternity of medical exams and constant monitoring, finally, the doctors decided that I was stable enough to receive visitors. That’s when Hannah entered the room with Melany in her arms, and a strange combination of emotions took over me. I still didn’t fully trust her.
“Miranda, she’s here, safe,” Magnus said with a smile, as Hannah approached with Melany. “I think there’s a little one who wants to see her mom.”
My eyes filled with tears as I saw my little one in Magnus’s arms. I extended my arms, eager to have her back. Hannah looked at me with a hint of understanding in her eyes.
“You know, Magnus has told me everything. I regret everything that happened, and I’m here to help now,” Hannah spoke sincerely.
“Thank you for taking care of her.”
“It’s been a pleasure.”
Although I was still surprised by the sudden alliance with Hannah, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. My attention returned to Melany, and Magnus carefully placed our daughter in my arms.
She was so small, so fragile, and at the same time, so strong for having overcome everything that had happened.
“Hello, my love. Mommy’s here. We’re together again,” I whispered softly, feeling Melany squeeze her little hand around my finger.
Magnus sat by my side, his expression reflecting relief and joy. Hannah, on the other hand, kept a certain distance, giving us space while watching with a mix of sadness and redemption.
“Thank you, Hannah. For Melany and for helping us,” I expressed sincerely, acknowledging the change in her attitude.
That hospital room, despite being a place of physical recovery, also filled with reconciliation and hope. We were together again, and although the road ahead was uncertain, we knew we were going to face it as a family.
While holding Melany between us, the need to fully understand the situation was still present. I looked at Magnus, whose eyes reflected a mix of relief and concern.
“Magnus, what happened to Richard?”
“I’ll give you a moment.”
Hannah left the room, leaving me alone with Melany and Magnus.
“You don’t have to worry about him, he’s already dead.”
“And are you sure about that?” He held my hand as if trying to transmit his strength and relief at the same time.
“I saw it, Miranda. The warehouse was on fire, and there was no way he could have survived that.”
His words were like a balm for my worries, but something else weighed on my heart.
“What about the men who used to work for him? Could there be others who want revenge?”
Magnus frowned, evaluating the possibility.
“I’m not sure. But we’ll do everything we can to make sure we’re safe.” We fell into a brief silence before I broke it with a question that had been on my mind.
“Magnus, what happens to us now? How do we move forward?” He looked at me with tenderness and determination.
“First, we’ll focus on us and Melany. Then, if you decide you want to move forward, we’ll build our future together.”
Despite the situation, those words filled my heart with hope. However, what Magnus said next took me by surprise.
“Also, I have something to tell you.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. When he opened it, it revealed a sparkling ring. My eyes widened in surprise as he spoke with a smile.
“I can’t imagine my life without you, Miranda. Even though we’ve been through a lot, I want to build a future with you. I thought you deserved a ring that was more your style, will you marry me?
“The sooner, the better,” I smiled just imagining it.
Miranda Anderson, nothing could sound more perfect than that.
