Chapter 181 I'll Take a Paternity Test
Charlotte didn't know what he meant and subconsciously asked, "Why not?"
The last time they were abroad, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd had been discussing this issue. After Stella and Jason's unilateral negotiation failed, the couple hurried back. Charlotte assumed it was for the engagement.
There were complicated emotions in Jason's eyes. He loosened his frown after a long while. "It's no wonder that Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd came back in a hurry. They probably had been planning it when they saw you before."
Charlotte could understand each word he said individually, but the meaning when put together left her puzzled.
She didn't like the feeling of being kept in the dark, so she hurriedly asked, "What do you mean, Mr. Langley?"
"When the Lloyd family's eldest elder passed away, he left a legacy for his lost little granddaughter. It was just a branch company with no prospects, but it was run so well that the Lloyd family now has to take it seriously," Jason explained succinctly.
Charlotte still wasn't very clear. "So what does this have to do with me?"
Jason looked back at her with a serious face. "Of course, you're related. The Lloyd family's third daughter, who is Mrs. Lloyd's sister, is not in good health. I'm afraid her days are numbered."
If Bonnie still couldn't find the missing child of the Lloyd family, she was afraid that the carefully managed company would go to someone else.
Bonnie did not want to have her sister suffer, so she hurriedly held on to Charlotte, who had suddenly appeared.
Charlotte narrowed her eyes to dwell on the news she had just heard. She thought for a moment before saying, "Thank you for informing me of this, but please pretend you didn't tell me, Mr. Langley."
Even if she gained immense wealth from becoming part of the Lloyds, it would be of no use.
Jason looked like he had expected her to say this and chuckled. "Of course. I won't hand over my capable secretary."
Although it sounded selfish, Charlotte inexplicably felt relieved.
The next day, Bonnie appeared at the door of the CEO's office on time again, peering inside.
Charlotte had just returned from a meeting. The moment she saw Bonnie, her hair stood on end. Racking her brain, she hurriedly said in the midst of the other secretaries' puzzled inquiries, "I'm going to the washroom."
The only person she could ask for help at a time like this was Jason, but he was still in the conference room for a meeting.
Charlotte hid in the stairway and waited for ten minutes or so before she called Jason, lowering her voice and inquiring, "Mr. Langley, are you done with the meeting?"
Jason found it strange. He interrupted his assistant and replied, "I just finished it."
"Could you please come to the stairway?" After Charlotte finished, she waited quietly.
A few minutes later, Jason strode over when he saw Charlotte pacing back and forth anxiously. He was amused. "Are you afraid of Mrs. Lloyd?"
"Mr. Langley!" Charlotte was startled and annoyed as she raised her voice.
Jason turned around and walked out after teasing her. Charlotte obediently followed.
When they walked into the CEO's office, Bonnie was sitting on the sofa chatting with the secretary who came to report. Seeing the two enter together, she greeted them with a loving smile.
Jason signaled the secretary to go out first. He then sat down opposite Bonnie and said in a serious tone, "Mrs. Lloyd, where is Stella?"
At the mention of her daughter, Bonnie froze slightly and waved her hand as she replied, "She's busy with her dessert store."
"Didn't she ask you to help her out?" Jason tried to make the topic about Bonnie's family to indirectly persuade her.
However, Bonnie didn't fall for it at all. She merely focused on Charlotte. "I can't be of much help, so I might as well send some tonic over to Ms. Seinfield."
Charlotte felt touched and helpless as she asked, "Why are you so concerned about me, Mrs. Lloyd?"
Her direct inquiry caught Bonnie off guard.
Bonnie subconsciously looked at Jason and then smiled bitterly, "Ms. Seinfield, please don't mind my frequent visits. I just have something to confirm."
"Mr. Langley probably mentioned it to me. However, I have my own mother, and she's the only one I have. I hope Mrs. Lloyd finds the real Lloyd family heiress soon." Charlotte cut off Bonnie's attempt to persuade her.
Bonnie was rendered speechless for a while. She seemed not too surprised, slowly saying, "I knew you would say that, so I didn't dare to push you too hard. It's just that my sister... Well..."
She sighed deeply as she spoke.
Jason could tell that something was wrong. He frowned and asked, "Is Mrs. Hannah's condition very bad? Didn't you say it was stabilized before?"
Bonnie looked sad and said with sorrow, "That's just what we've been saying to the outsiders. My cousins have their eyes on the company. If they knew the truth, they would have taken action."
She looked toward Charlotte, feeling relieved again. "It's good that she decided to move out in the first place. Otherwise, you wouldn't be at peace now, Ms. Seinfield."
If the Lloyd family's home base was in the country, Charlotte would have been in big trouble long ago.
Charlotte was well aware of this and was surprisingly grateful to the one who made the decision.
"I'm not trying to pressure you, Ms. Seinfield, not to mention that you haven't done a paternity test now, so maybe it's just a coincidence." Bonnie's attitude softened. "Of course, it's even better that you're willing to take the time for the test."
Charlotte hoped that she wasn't a Lloyd family member. If she was, she would be targeted.
Charlotte was unsure of what to do and didn't answer, but she couldn't withstand Bonnie's expectant gaze, so she had to avoid it.
Jason stepped in to defend Charlotte. "Mrs. Lloyd, I know your considerations, but now Charlotte does not have the time to deal with such things. The company's major business is advancing. You should get some rest first so that she can concentrate on completing our current work, Mrs. Lloyd."
On the surface, he was talking about work, but in reality, he was politely refusing.
Being rejected once, Bonnie was too embarrassed to ask Charlotte again. She could only respond awkwardly, turning to leave after exchanging a few pleasantries.
Only after she left did Jason feel slightly relieved. "At least you can be at peace for a few days."
Looking down, Charlotte sat on the sofa with a lot on her mind.
If she really was the missing child of the Lloyds, it meant that her birth mother was lying in a hospital bed dying.
Charlotte suddenly thought of her mother's look when she passed away and felt a lump in her throat. An inexplicable sense of trepidation came at her.
Seeing her entanglement, Jason did not have any hint of pressuring her. His low voice sounded extraordinarily reliable at this time. "If you want to go for a paternity test, feel free to do so. At least everyone will know about the fact. As for whether to return to the Lloyd family, it's your own choice.
At worst, you an still continue to be a secretary in Langley Group."
The last part of his words sounded teasing, but it gave her huge confidence.
Charlotte thought of the baby she was pregnant with and also thought of the woman who might be her birth mother, dying somewhere far away. She silently made a major decision.
She tilted her head and looked at Jason with a much firmer attitude and a clear gaze. "Mr. Langley, since Mrs. Lloyd came back for this and treated me so well, I should always do what I can do for her. I'll take a paternity test."
