Chapter 180 Maybe She's Ms. Lloyd

The large carriage was more than enough to accommodate four people, but the silent air still left Charlotte breathless.

Bonnie, who was always gentle, stopped smiling and closed her eyes to rest.

With an idea in mind, Stella directly asked Charlotte, "Ms. Seinfield, do you still have to go to work with Jason later?"

"Yeah. There's still a bit of work that hasn't been wrapped up." Charlotte lied without changing her face.

If she directly said that Jason was taking her to send Stella and Bonnie home, she was afraid it would be even more screwed up.

Stella's eyes were probing and scrutinizing when she said sarcastically, "You're so busy, Ms. Seinfield. I'm sure I've disturbed you by asking you to dinner today."

Given Charlotte's previous behavior, she didn't have a favorable impression of Stella and replied calmly, "It's no trouble, Miss Lloyd."

Stella failed to embarrass Charlotte. Her face changed a bit, and she still wanted to say something more.

Before she could speak, Jason interrupted, "Stella, please don't disturb Mrs. Lloyd's rest."

Not expecting that he would admonish her in front of her mother, Stella showed unwillingness and sadness on her face. Aggrieved, she looked at him but did not make a tantrum.

When they arrived at the destination, Bonnie, who had been silent all this time, quietly spoke out, "Ms. Seinfield, please don't take today's matter to heart. What I did was inappropriate."

Charlotte was flattered and touched for a few moments. "You did it for my sake, Mrs. Lloyd."

Bonnie was relieved by her understanding. They exchanged a few more pleasantries before saying goodbye.

Jason overheard their conversation and, once they left, abruptly asked, "Mrs. Lloyd seems especially friendly toward you."

"Really? It's probably because I resemble her daughter." Charlotte's eyes flickered. She flatly skipped over the topic and casually joked, "Speaking of which, I have to thank Ms. Lloyd. If it wasn't for my resemblance to her, I'm afraid that you wouldn't have kept me."

Obviously, that was true, but Jason found it awkward. He couldn't say anything to refute it and could only demand in a generalized manner with a sullen face, "Don't say that. I don't like it."

Charlotte looked up at him. "What's wrong? Is it because you think I'm too different from Ms. Lloyd?"

They hadn't talked about this topic since Stella came back. Bringing it up at this time was more or less abrupt.

Since she sounded serious, Jason looked over, his brows furrowing slightly. "Don't think nonsense."

His responses always demanded authority, rarely offering Charlotte straightforward reassurance.

Charlotte pursed her lips and quietly got into the car. As the car drove smoothly, she did not hold back and said, "I'm not thinking nonsense. It's just a fact that's right in front of my eyes, and there's no use to ignore. I don't want to be anyone's substitute."

She was close to cutting her heart open to show him.

Jason's eyes darkened slightly, and it was only after a long time that he softly said, "No one is treating you as a substitute. In the beginning, I indeed kept you because of your face, but now it's because you are Charlotte."

Charlotte was stunned.

She didn't expect him to say those words.

Her gloom of the past few days was gone after she heard his short denial, and she was in a good mood.

Jason noticed the change in her and did not comment.

After this dinner, Silas's parents did not come to Charlotte again, but Bonnie came to her more and more often.

When Charlotte stepped into the office early in the morning, Bonnie came with a lunchbox, saying that she had stewed the chicken soup by herself and brought it for Charlotte to try.

"Mrs. Lloyd, you don't need to be so nice to me." Charlotte didn't know how to react. She knew the reason why Bonnie did so, but Charlotte didn't know why she was too enthusiastic while they had yet to acknowledge each other as relatives.

Bonnie didn't think much of it but said kindly, "I made too much for Stella, so I sent you some by the way. Don't stand on ceremony."

Charlotte glanced at Jason next to her. He looked calm, which made her unable to see what was on his mind.

She accepted the offer with gratitude, "Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Mrs. Lloyd, but please don't trouble yourself further. I haven't been able to stomach such things lately."

While the soup was nourishing, it was a bit heavy for her taste.

Bonnie was happy that Charlotte took it. She perfunctorily promised, "Okay. Got it."

However, after learning that Charlotte was working overtime that night, Bonnie sent more soup over.

Those who didn't know the inside story would think that Bonnie was Charlotte's mother.

Charlotte looked at the large bowl full of soup and shared some of it with Jason. She felt quite troubled.

Allowing Bonnie to continue like this wasn't sustainable. Even though she wasn't actively seeking her biological parents, Bonnie's actions threatened to entangle her in unnecessary conflicts.

"Mrs. Lloyd is so nice to you probably because she thinks you're alone and lonely," Jason lightly consoled, not seeing this as something to be troubled about.

Charlotte glanced at him, her worries not diminishing. She said casually, "You don't think it matters, but..."

She ended abruptly. She couldn't say that she was investigating her background.

Jason had already looked sideways at her, signaling with his eyes that she should continue.

Charlotte thought for a moment and confessed partially, "The last time I went to my hometown to get my birth certificate, it was actually to confirm a suspicion I had."

"What is it?"

"My parents are not my biological parents." She confessed simply, "I went to confirm it."

Jason slowly put down the bowl and got serious. "Do you need me to help you..."

"No, thanks. I don't intend to look for my biological parents," Charlotte decisively refused, looking straight into Jason's eyes. Somehow, she confessed the truth, "Ms. Lloyd told me this news. She wanted to use this as a condition for me to set you up with her."

Jason's face tensed up as he listened.

Charlotte could tell the pressing questions in his eyes and took the initiative to say, "I didn't agree to it. That's why I went to confirm it myself, as a way to give myself a closure."

At that point, Jason suddenly thought of something and said slowly, "Mrs. Lloyd's sister lost a child some years ago. I don't know the specifics. They went abroad after the child went missing."

He paused and suddenly realized. "So Mrs. Lloyd thinks you are her niece?"

Charlotte didn't realize that she had told him all about what had happened. She nodded somewhat awkwardly. "Maybe."

"Just go get a paternity test."

"That won't be necessary," Charlotte directly refused without hesitation.

The Lloyd family was powerful and involved in many business fields. Charlotte was pregnant, so it was only right to stay away from trouble and quietly live her own life.

Jason's face turned serious and he looked at her. "Charlotte, you still don't understand. This is not a question of whether you refuse or not."

If she really was the Lloyd family's heir, the Lloyds would let her return to the family no matter what it would take.

Charlotte blinked.

Jason sighed. "Do you think Mrs. Lloyd would really come back specifically for the engagement?"
