Chapter 179 Refusing the Engagement for Her

Stella instantly fell silent and only reacted after a second, ashamed and angry, her cheeks reddening as she restrained her anger. "Ms. Seinfield, are you being ungrateful? I'm doing this just for your sake."

Charlotte found her fake sympathetic face disgusting. She didn't bother to be polite to Stella as she got up and threw all the desserts she handed over into the trash can. Then, Charlotte looked down at her and indifferently said, "I told you. You don't get to do so."

After saying that, Charlotte turned around and went to her desk to continue dealing with official business.

Stella was quite aggrieved. She tugged at Jason's arm, pitifully begging for comfort, "Jason, you know I don't mean any harm. I just think that she's alone and lonely here, so I suppose it'll be a great idea to set her up with Silas."

She thought her reason was sufficient, but she didn't see any pity on Jason's face.

Jason put down the fork. He wanted to say something but did not do so. After quietly staring at her for a while, he said, "Bring the dessert to the secretary's office. They like it better, and they can taste the flavor better."

This was tantamount to a rejection.

Stella stood still, watching Jason sit back in his chair, staring blankly. As if showing goodwill, he took the initiative to hand Charlotte a document and strike up a conversation with her.

At this moment, Stella seemed utterly superfluous.

Charlotte took the document handed over by Jason, flipped through it, and asked in confusion, "Hasn't this already been completed?"

"Yeah." Since Stella had left, Jason took back the document, thought about the wording, and said, "Stella meant no harm; perhaps her words came out a bit harsh."

Originally, Charlotte felt quite touched when he handed over the document. As soon as she heard him say this, she immediately got serious again. Looking straight into his eyes, she asked sternly, "Mr. Langley, you should be clear about the purpose of her doing this, right? Therefore, stop using these excuses to numb me."

As expected, Jason stopped making excuses for Stella.

After a long moment of silence, Jason spoke again, "You don't need to worry about Silas."

This time, Charlotte directly did not reply.

The next afternoon, Silas's parents arrived in the country and promptly scheduled an evening meeting.

Charlotte spent the entire afternoon thinking about how to decently reject the arranged marriage without hurting the Hoyces' feelings. She also silently told herself not to be nervous.

Jason noticed what she was doing and quietly divided up some of her work so that she had enough time to prepare.

Charlotte felt like she was going to her execution. Half an hour before the dinner, she took a deep breath and prepared herself for the appointment.

Fortunately it wasn't some dazzling grand hotel, so she was less nervous until she saw familiar faces waiting inside.

"Mrs. Lloyd. Ms. Lloyd." Charlotte looked at them in surprise, then glanced at the unfamiliar middle-aged couple and Silas sitting beside them.

Silas seemed to be in a bad mood. He only forced a smile when he saw Charlotte. "Charlotte, sorry for involving you in this. I've already explained it to my mom and dad."

Before he could finish, Bonnie interjected, "We just wanted to confirm Ms. Seinfield's intentions."

After saying that, she gestured for Charlotte to take a seat.

Charlotte reluctantly took her seat

However, after she sat down, the elders there did not have the intention of going straight to the point. Instead, they were exchanging pleasantries with each other, and the juniors seemed to be transparent.

Bonnie looked at the time and muttered, "He should be coming soon."

Right then, the door of the private room opened. Jason's tall figure walked in before he sat down directly beside Charlotte, quite oppressive.

Charlotte was dumbfounded. She was stunned to see Bonnie and Stella there, so why was Jason also there?

Meanwhile, Jason just gave her a look, signaling her to remain quiet and listen.

When the elders were done with the pleasantries, Mrs. Hoyce was the first to break the silence. "Ms. Seinfield, as you can see, you should be clear about the reason for today's meeting. Stella has already talked to me about your concerns, so I've invited Mr. Langley here as well."

Charlotte was filled with confusion as she listened. What concerns did she have? What did it have to do with Jason?

Mrs. Hoyce continued, "I understand that your parents have passed away one after another, so perhaps you'll need a more authoritative person to help you make a decision when it comes to your marriage. Mr. Langley, as your boss for five years, can barely fill that role."

Charlotte wondered, 'Hey, is she even speaking Porenian now? Why can't I understand a single word?'

Out of courtesy, Charlotte did not interrupt for the time being and waited for Mrs. Hoyce to finish before summarizing succinctly, "So Mrs. Hoyce, what you're saying is that Mr. Langley feels that the engagement is appropriate, so I should let him be the witness?"

"You're indeed intelligent, Ms. Seinfield."

Charlotte, with a faint smile on her face, kept asking, "Then have you asked Mr. Langley for his opinion, Mrs. Hoyce?"

"He won't refuse," Mrs. Hoyce replied firmly.

Charlotte turned her head to look at Jason and asked seriously, "Do you think this is a good idea, Mr. Langley?"

All the eyes in the room were focused on Jason. It was as if he had truly become the head of the family, and they were all waiting for his decision.

Jason put down his glass of water, his eyes balking as he slowly replied, "If they get engaged, it's certainly a good thing for Charlotte."

Other than Charlotte and Silas, the faces of the others in the room visibly relaxed for a split second.

"Mr. Langley..." Silas wanted to say something desperately.

Jason interrupted him and continued, "But Charlotte is an independent person. I'm just her boss, not her guardian. I can't make decisions on these. Moreover, it looks like Mr. Hoyce is not enthusiastic, so how about we all simply get together for a meal today?"

He finished methodically, his calm eyes glancing at everyone present. Mrs. Hoyce and Mrs. Lloyd wanted to say something else, but Silas's father, who had been all but silent, was the first to speak, "Let's simply have a meal then."

Charlotte was secretly shocked. She had thought that Jason wouldn't agree, but she hadn't expected him to say such reasonable words.

She glanced discreetly at Stella, and as expected, the latter almost failed to hide the anger in her eyes.

Charlotte had thought that it'd be troublesome, but she didn't expect that after Jason finished words, the elders tacitly stopped mentioning it and turned to start chatting about other things with a calm demeanor.

Silas's father brought the topic back to domestic business and kept chatting with Jason.

Charlotte didn't enjoy the meal at all. When it ended, Silas purposely chased after her to apologize, "Charlotte, I didn't know they were serious. I'm sorry for causing you trouble."

Charlotte would never blame Silas. She gently appeased, "It's fine. You're a victim too."

Jason strode past them and gloomily said, "Still have the leisure to chat?"

After his reminder, Charlotte saw Mrs. Hoyce in the distance who was looking over. She stopped chatting and said goodbye to Silas.

She came to her senses and said, "How will Ms. Lloyd and Mrs. Lloyd go home?"

"I'll give them a ride."

"I see. Then I'll take a taxi back."

"You'll come along," Jason refused flatly.

Charlotte looked puzzled. "Huh?"
