Chapter 178 Getting Engaged

Charlotte instantly got nervous but still, she maintained her official smile and business-like attitude. "You're overthinking it, Mr. Langley. Would I intentionally injure myself?"

Jason narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing her slowly as he listed her previous injuries in detail. "In the past, you were even able to come to work with an IV drip, but now you're delicate instead."

Hearing his words, Charlotte rolled her eyes fiercely and asked with a fake smile on her face, "Then shouldn't you reflect on how you treat your employees?"

These words stunned Jason, who then said meaningfully, "I've already made an exception for you."

She froze, not expecting Jason to really answer seriously.

She knew the fact that he said well. Even if Jason didn't say it, from the fact that every time he got angry, the other staff came to her, it was clear that she was indeed the one closest to him.

Charlotte was just about to say something to end the conversation when her phone suddenly rang. It was an unfamiliar number.

She picked up and politely asked the other party for their identity. Startled, she paused after hearing the caller's introduction. Looking at Jason's eyes, Charlotte wanted to hang up but was stopped by him with a wink as Jason signaled her to put it on speakerphone.

There was a threatening implication that if she dared to leave, he would take the phone away from her.

Charlotte was forced to put the phone on speakerphone before answering, "May I ask what you are calling about?"

A loving and soft voice came from the receiver. "We just want to talk about your marriage to Silas. I hope it won't be too abrupt for you."

The large CEO's office suddenly fell silent.

Jason's eyes were like two sharp blades, thrusting hard at Charlotte.

"You may have misunderstood. Mr. Hoyce and I are just friends." With a chill down her spine, Charlotte hurriedly explained last night's misunderstanding.

There was silence on the other end of the phone for a short while. Then, a male voice rang out. "I think you have misunderstood, Ms. Seinfield. We're calling you not because of yesterday's incident."

Charlotte held back the words she was about to say.

Then, the man continued, "We will talk about the specifics when we return home."

After saying that, he unilaterally hung up the phone, leaving Charlotte stunned.

Before she could sort it out, she heard Jason's mockery. "Yesterday, you said you had no intention of marrying Silas. Now, his parents just called. You've said that you need to recuperate from your injuries, but that's just an excuse, right? Are you afraid that Silas's parents will know what you've been doing as my secretary?"

Both his tone and his voice were harsh. He sounded so distant from Charlotte.

Charlotte felt aggrieved. "I've already explained what happened yesterday, and you saw it. The diagnosis and medical advice were all issued by the doctor himself. You've heard what Mr. Hoyce's parents said just now. It's not related to me in any way."

Originally, her heart was in turmoil because of what Silas's parents said about her marriage with Silas. With Jason's mockery, Charlotte just wanted to give him a big slap.

With her questioning, Jason fell silent. He wanted to say something but hesitated. In the end, he said expressionlessly, "If his parents really return home, you don't have to do anything about it. I'll step in to solve it."

He made it sound easy. Charlotte looked at him calmly and asked indifferently, "In what capacity are you going to step in on my behalf? You are just my boss, not my guardian."

Her voice was soft, but her words were so harsh that Jason couldn't retort them.

Charlotte narrowed her eyes and changed the topic after she finished speaking. "I will do as I see fit. The 9:20 meeting is about to start."

In order to avoid embarrassment, Charlotte left the meeting to the other secretaries to follow up while she went to the design department to confirm the progress of the S&C new product. She also asked the staff there for their opinion on the design competition entries, as there were only two days left before the results of the rematch were announced.

When Charlotte finished her work and returned to the CEO's office, she saw Jason and Stella sitting on the sofa, tasting dessert.

Charlotte stopped in her tracks and turned around to leave them alone. Unexpectedly, she was stopped by Stella.

"Ms. Seinfield, just in time." Stella opened the door and took the initiative to invite her in. "My dessert shop is about to open. Jason is helping me try out the products. You can just help me out."

Stella looked natural. Charlotte didn't see any interaction between her and Jason at the banquet yesterday. Stella didn't even show up when Jason left. She acted as if nothing had happened.

Charlotte kept feeling that there was something vaguely strange, but there was no way to tell.

While she was thinking, she had been pressed onto the sofa by Stella, tasting the desserts one by one and giving polite comments.

Stella revealed her surprise after Charlotte gave her comment. She said in a loud voice, "Great, this is my favorite too. I can offer it for free when you and Silas get married."

Charlotte heard her heart sink hard to the bottom.

No wonder everyone suddenly became obsessed with Silas' marriage to her overnight. It seemed that Stella had put a lot of effort into this.

Jason's face darkened as he put down his dessert and asked Stella, "Who said that?"

"Mrs. Hoyce, of course." Stella showed a bright smile. "They'll be landing soon. I'll discuss it with my mom by then."

Hearing this, Charlotte couldn't even maintain her polite smile and gloomily interrupted Stella, "Ms. Lloyd, I have to admit that Mrs. Lloyd is gentle and nice, but isn't this way over the line? I'm an adult. Whether I get married and who I marry should be up to me, right?"

Stella asked with feigned surprise, "Is that so? I thought you and Silas were already in love. After all, you've gone out on so many dates alone. I even saw Silas shopping for rings two days ago."

Charlotte didn't know if she was lying.

However, Charlotte corrected her with a serious look, "Ms. Lloyd, please don't spread any news while it's not confirmed."

Jason interjected, "Stella, when did you become so familiar with Silas? I remember that the Lloyd family and the Hoyce family have only had some intermittent dealings recently, not to this extent."

He wasn't a fool. With so much news coming straight to Charlotte in a short period, there must be a mastermind behind the scenes.

Stella feigned ignorance and explained innocently, "We've always had dealings. My mom is doing it for Ms. Seinfield's sake. Ms. Seinfield isn't young anymore. She can't be your personal secretary for the rest of her life."

She purposely emphasized the words "personal secretary" and contemptuously glanced at Charlotte as she continued, "It just so happens that Silas's family doesn't place much importance on a marriage between families of equal social rank, so marrying into them be a good choice for Ms. Seinfield."

Charlotte had completely understood. Stella disliked her and was afraid that she would really marry into the Langley family, so she planned to have Charlotte marry Silas to get rid of her first and then went on to work on Jason.

Charlotte had to give her credit for her static, which was slightly smarter than Veronica's.

Charlotte had a stern face and rejected it outright, "Ms. Lloyd, you don't need to worry about me."

Stella thought that Charlotte was being grateful. She looked smug as she said, "There is no need to feel embarrassed. I'm..."

"Ms. Lloyd, what I mean is that you don't get to worry about me." Charlotte interrupted her harshly.
