Chapter 171 One Room Will Do
On the day of departing for her hometown, Charlotte was nervous for no reason. She took a long breath while looking into the mirror, and in order to alleviate the pressure, she even replaced the heavy gauze of the wound with a light bandage.
"Why are you so nervous? Are you preparing yourself for seeing an old flame?"
Jason came to the door of the room at an unknown time and joked.
It sounded more like sarcasm to Charlotte.
But due to what he said, she felt less uneasy and nervous.
The road was not smooth. The roads to the countryside were getting more and more bumpy. Seeing that Jason's face was getting darkened, the new chauffeur was so scared that he started sweating. The more nervous, the more prone to make mistakes.
When Charlotte felt uncomfortable because of the bumpy roads, she tried to pacify the chauffeur. "You may drive slowly."
The chauffeur nodded his head uneasily in agreement.
Jason looked dissatisfied as he asked Charlotte, "Why did Tyler suddenly ask for leave?"
"His family member died."
When he asked, the chauffeur became even more nervous and drove very slowly. If this went on, they probably wouldn't be able to reach their destination even if it was dark.
Jason simply let the chauffeur take a taxi back and personally drove. Charlotte didn't dare to sit in the back seat and obediently went to the front passenger's seat.
Jason had never gone there, so he drove according to the navigation, but he seemed to be quite familiar with the road conditions. It went unexpectedly smooth. They arrived at the destination when the sky had darkened.
Charlotte looked at the greatly changed hometown and had a few moments of trance. She couldn't even recognize the direction of her old home.
Jason leisurely spoke, "Let's find a place to stay first."
"Okay."
No matter how developed the place was, it was still only a small county. Charlotte searched around before finding a hotel with a barely adequate environment, and after checking in, she proposed to go out for a walk herself.
Jason didn't ask much and nodded in agreement.
Charlotte followed her memories to find a store near her old home. It had just changed to a larger storefront, redecorated. An old lady with gray hair was sitting behind the cash register listening to the recorder.
Charlotte recognized her at once and walked in to greet her, "Mrs. Lance, do you remember me?"
Mrs. Lance looked up, carefully recognizing her appearance. Her cloudy eyes suddenly lit up, full of surprise. She walked around the cash register and grabbed Charlotte's hand. "Charlotte, why are you back? How is your mom?"
Since Charlotte's mom was mentioned, her gaze darkened for a moment and she barely forced a smile. "She's doing well."
"That's great." Mrs. Lance kept holding her hand without letting go, exchanging pleasantries for a while before she asked, "Why did you come back this time?"
Charlotte's eyes flickered, and she lied directly. "I lost my passport, so I came back to get my birth certificate."
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Lance quickly said, "How are you gonna get it?"
"I'll just go to the hospital that delivered me at the time." Charlotte stared at Mrs. Lance with fixed eyes. "My mom said that you accompanied the birth. Do you still remember which hospital it was?"
Mrs. Lance looked troubled. She wanted to say something but hesitated, shrugging it off. "You have to ask your mom. I'm old. I can't remember too well."
Charlotte basically confirmed her guess from Mrs. Lance's look.
After thinking about it, Charlotte simply cut to the chase and probed, "Mrs. Lance, you don't need to worry. My mom has told me everything. You only need to tell me the place. I'll go there and look for it myself."
Mrs. Lance was stunned for a moment and confirmed, "Your mom has told you everything?"
"Yes. I just need the name of the hospital."
The old lady was caught in a tangle and sighed. "I didn't want to be the bad guy, but since your mom has made it clear, there's no need for me to hide it. You were found in the maternity ward of the No. 1 Hospital. When you were crying, I was accompanying your mom for a checkup. I asked around and found out that no one had claimed you, so I secretly carried you away."
Despite being prepared, Charlotte was still in a trance for a moment upon hearing Mrs. Lance's words. She quickly came back to her senses. "Thank you, Mrs. Lance. I'll just get my passport. Nothing can change the fact that I'm my mom's daughter."
Mrs. Lance felt relieved, patting the back of her hand and sighing with emotion, "I told her that you'd be a nice daughter."
"It's late. Take care, Mrs. Lance. See you around."
Saying goodbye to Mrs. Lance, Charlotte felt quite lost on the way back and surprisingly did not dare to immediately go to the No. 1 Hospital to seek confirmation.
So many years had passed. Perhaps the file was long gone, so what was the point of her pursuing this?
Charlotte kept thinking while returning to the hotel, and after entering the door, she directly collapsed on the big bed, looking at the ceiling in a daze.
Click.
The sound of the door opening came.
As soon as she got up, she saw Jason walking out of the bathroom, naked, his hair still dripping water.
Charlotte was so shocked that she couldn't speak for a moment. "Mr. Langley, didn't we get two rooms?"
"There's a problem with the facilities in the other room. Overhauling takes time," Jason replied lightly, glancing at her playfully. "We've seen each other naked many times, so what are you shy about?"
She helplessly looked down when she noticed a flash of dark red light in the socket and teased, "In less than two days, more people will see you naked."
Jason followed her line of sight, squinting his eyes and observing for a moment to understand.
At this time, Charlotte had already handed over a bath towel, kindly comforting, "It's fine. It's their blessing to see you naked."
Jason's face darkened as he sent a locator to his assistant, telling him to come tomorrow to take care of it.
"Mr. Langley, this is not the hotel I carefully selected. There are a lot of security risks, so it's better to stay careful." Charlotte stopped joking and seriously reminded him.
Jason silently sat down in front of her. Charlotte wisely brought a hair dryer to dry his hair.
"What did you go out to do just now?"
Still, he asked.
Charlotte narrowed her eyes and focused on what she was doing, answering as if nothing had happened, "I went to an old lady whom I haven't seen for a long time to exchange pleasantries."
"Where are you going tomorrow? Is your home still around?" Jason followed up with more questions.
"My home is definitely gone. Back then, in order to cure my mom, we sold everything we had. I'm going to go to the No. 1 Hospital." Charlotte did not hide it and answered truthfully.
As expected, Jason held her wrist and asked in confusion, "Why do you need to go there?"
Charlotte gently wrenched her hand away and continued to blow dry his hair, faintly answering, "To get my birth certificate, just in case."
Just after she finished drying his hair, the hotel receptionist came to apologize, saying that the other room could not be overhauled for the time being. She asked if they could change to a standard room.
Before Charlotte could say anything, Jason replied straight away, "No. One room will do."
The receptionist apologized again and compensated half of the room price.
Charlotte subconsciously glanced at Jason's sturdy body and then looked at the bed, which was too small for them. She thought of the still flickering eye-of-the-needle surveillance and comforted herself with the thought that Jason couldn't possibly be so impulsive.
Only then did Jason get up and took a piece of paper to cover the place where he had just discovered the camera.
Charlotte's eyes widened with fear. She panicked and reminded him, "Cameras are just like cockroaches. While you think there's only one, in fact, there might be more!"
Jason chuckled. "You said it. It's a blessing for them to see me naked."
