Chapter 50 The Awakening Storm
Chapter 50 The Awakening Storm
The night grew heavier, inside the Blue Mountain Pack, everything seemed calm on the surface—but beneath it, something ancient was stirring. Zoe stood on the balcony outside her Luna office, arms wrapped around herself as the wind brushed against her skin. The moon hung high above, brighter than usual, almost… watchful. She could feel it, something was coming, something that had been waiting for a very long time.
Behind her, the door creaked open “You’re going to freeze out here. Zack’s voice was softer than usual. Zoe didn’t turn. “I like the cold,” she said quietly. “It helps me think.” Zack stepped beside her, leaning against the railing. “You’ve been doing a lot of that lately.” Zoe let out a small breath. “I don’t think I have a choice.” There was a pause.
“What did you see, exactly?” Zack asked. Zoe hesitated. “I saw… destruction,” she admitted. “But not random. Controlled. Like it was necessary.” Zack’s jaw tightened slightly.\\ “And you think that was you?” Zoe nodded. “I wasn’t scared of it,” she whispered. “That’s what’s bothering me.” Zack turned to face her fully. “Maybe because you understood it.”
Zoe looked at him, confusion flickering across her face. “How could I understand something like that?” “Because sometimes,” Zack said slowly, “doing the right thing doesn’t feel good.” Zoe’s chest tightened. Celeste stirred again, stronger this time. He’s right, her wolf murmured. Zoe frowned slightly. “You’re back,” she whispered internally. I never left… I was just… healing.
Zoe softened slightly at that. I missed you, she admitted. Celeste’s presence wrapped around her—warm, steady. We’re stronger now. Zoe wasn’t sure if that reassured her… or scared her more. Suddenly— A sharp pressure slammed into her chest. Zoe gasped, gripping the railing. “Zoe?” Zack immediately moved closer. “What is it?” Her eyes widened. “I feel—” A pulse.
“It’s her,” Zoe said, voice trembling. “She’s close.” Zack’s entire body went rigid. “Where?” Zoe closed her eyes, focusing. The bond between her and the land… between her and something deeper… began to hum. Then— Her eyes snapped open. “The eastern border.” Zack didn’t hesitate. “James!” he minds linked. Already on it, James responded instantly. The Warriors are moving.
Zack grabbed Zoe’s hand. “You stay here.” Zoe yanked her hand back. “Not happening.” “Zoe—” “She’s here because of me,” Zoe snapped. “I’m not hiding,” Zack growled softly, frustration evident. “You’re not fighting her alone.” Zoe met his gaze. “Then don’t leave my side.” That was all he needed. “Fine,” he said. “But you listen to me,” Zoe smirked faintly. “No promises.” The forest was unnaturally still, no wind, no sound.
Even the animals had gone silent. Zoe and Zack moved quickly, and James and a group of warriors were not far behind. The deeper they went, the heavier the air became. Like something was pressing down on them, watching and waiting. Zoe slowed down, and Zack instinctively stepped slightly in front of her. Zoe rolled her eyes but didn’t argue.
Then a soft laugh echoed through the trees. “Well… that was faster than I expected.” The mist appeared first, thick and dark. Then slowly—she formed. Morgana. Her silver eyes gleamed unnaturally, her presence both beautiful and terrifying. Zoe felt her stomach drop. “That’s her,” she whispered.
Zack’s wolf, Zeus, surged forward inside him. Danger. Morgana tilted her head slightly, studying Zoe. “My, my… you’ve grown stronger.” Zoe clenched her fists. “You’re the one who kidnapped me.” Morgana smiled. “I prefer the term… invited.” Zoe’s eyes flashed. “Try that again, and I’ll kill you.” James and the warriors arrived, forming a defensive line behind them.
Morgana glanced at them briefly. “Ah… an audience.” Her gaze returned to Zoe. “But this isn’t about them.” Zoe stepped forward. “It is now.” Morgana’s smile widened. “You still think like a protector.” Zoe’s patience snapped. “I am a protector.” Morgana’s expression darkened slightly. “No,” she said softly. “You’re something much more dangerous than that.”
Zoe’s heart pounded. “What do you want?” Morgana’s eyes gleamed. “You already know.” Zoe shook her head. “I don’t, then, let me remind you.” Before anyone could react, Morgana lifted her hand, and the world twisted. Zoe gasped as the ground beneath her vanished. Darkness swallowed her whole.
“ZOE!” Zack’s roar echoed through the forest. He lunged forward—but it was too late; she was gone again. Zoe hit the ground hard, but it wasn’t the forest anymore. It was… somewhere else, a void. Dark, endless, with only a faint silver glow surrounding her. Zoe pushed herself up slowly. “Where am I…” A voice answered. “You’re where you buried the truth.”Zoe froze.
That voice… It wasn’t Morgana. It was— Her. Zoe turned slowly. Standing in front of her was… herself, but not quite. This version of Zoe stood taller, stronger, her silver eyes glowing with an ancient power that made the air tremble. “Who are you?” Zoe whispered. The other Zoe smirked slightly. “You already know.” Zoe’s chest tightened. “My… past?”
“Your truth.” Zoe shook her head. “No… I don’t remember any of this.” “That’s because it was taken from you.” Zoe’s breath caught. “The Moon Goddess…” The other Zoe nodded. “She didn’t erase it to punish you,” she said. “She erased it to protect the world.” Zoe felt the weight of those words settle heavily. “What did I do?” Silence. Then— “You chose mercy.” Zoe blinked.
“That doesn’t sound like something worth erasing.” The other Zoe’s expression darkened. “You showed mercy to something that should have been destroyed.” Zoe’s heart began to race. “The hybrid…” The other Zoe stepped closer. “Yes.” Zoe swallowed hard. “Why didn’t I kill him?” The answer came like a blade. “Because you loved him.” Zoe staggered back slightly. “No…” Zoe shook her head rapidly. “That’s not possible.” The other Zoe’s eyes softened slightly.
“You were different back then. Stronger… but also more alone.” Zoe’s chest tightened painfully. “And now?” she whispered. The other Zoe looked at her for a long moment. “Now… you have something you didn’t have before.” Zoe’s voice was barely audible. “What?” “People who will pull you back when you lose yourself.” Zack’s face flashed in her mind: Jacob, Jessica, Lucas, James, her pack, her family. Zoe’s eyes filled with emotion.
“I don’t want to become that version of me.” The other Zoe stepped even closer. “You don’t have to.” Zoe looked up at her. “But you do have to accept her.” Zoe hesitated. “Why?” The answer came softly. “Because she’s the only one who knows how to stop Morgana.” Back in the forest, Zack stood frozen.
Rage and fear tore through him violently. “I’m going to kill her,” he growled. James grabbed his arm. “Zack—” “I’m not losing her again!” The ground beneath them trembled slightly. The air shifted. Then— A pulse of power exploded outward, blinding, overwhelming, and Zack’s eyes widened. “That’s Zoe…”
But it felt different, stronger, older, something ancient had just awakened, and for the first time, Even Morgana took a step back. “…Impossible,” she whispered. The power surged again, and this time, Zoe stepped out of the darkness. Her silver eyes glowing, her presence is commanding, terrifying and unstoppable. Zack’s breath caught. “Zoe…?” She looked at him and for a moment— He didn’t know if she was the same girl he loved… Or something far more dangerous.
