Chapter 49 Echoes Beneath the Surface
Chapter 49 Echoes Beneath the Surface
The journey back from the Moon Light Pack was quiet….too quiet. Zoe sat in the passenger seat, her fingers lightly tracing the worn edges of the Book of Life resting in her lap. The road stretched endlessly ahead, but her mind was somewhere else entirely, lost in fragments, in whispers, in truths she wasn’t sure she was ready to face.
Zack glanced at her every few minutes. He could feel it, the shift. Not just in her thoughts—but in her soul. “You haven’t said a word since we left,” he finally said, his voice gentle but laced with concern. Zoe didn’t look at him. “I’m thinking.”
“That much is obvious,” he replied, exhaling softly. “What are you thinking about?”
She hesitated, then, quietly, “What if I don’t like who I used to be?” That made Zack’s grip on the steering wheel tighten slightly. “You’re not her,” he said firmly. Zoe shook her head. “But I am. That’s the problem.” Silence filled the car again. After a moment, Zack reached over, taking one of her hands in his. “Listen to me,” he said, his voice steady. “Whatever you were back then… whatever choices you made… that doesn’t change who you are now.”
Zoe finally turned to look at him. “You don’t know that.”
“I do,” he said without hesitation. “Because I know you.” Her chest tightened slightly at that. “You rejected me once,” she reminded him quietly. The words hung between them. Zack flinched—just slightly—but he didn’t pull away. “I know,” he said. “And I’ll regret that for the rest of my life. But that doesn’t mean I don’t see you now.”
Zoe looked away again, her throat tight. Celeste stirred faintly inside her. He means it, her wolf murmured. Zoe didn’t respond. She wasn’t ready to agree. But… she wasn’t ready to argue either. By the time they reached Blue Mountain Pack, dusk had settled across the sky. The moment they stepped out of the car, Zoe felt it, a shift in the air, something… off.
Her instincts sharpened instantly. “Do you feel that?” she asked quietly. Zack nodded. “Yeah.” They didn’t need to say anything else; both moved quickly toward the pack house. As soon as they entered, James was already waiting. “About time,” he said, crossing his arms—but his expression softened when he saw Zoe. “You, okay?” Zoe nodded.
“I’m fine.” James studied her for a moment, like he didn’t fully believe her—but he let it go. “We’ve had reports,” he said, turning to Zack. “Strange movement near the eastern borders. Patrols haven’t found anything yet, but the wolves are on edge.” Zack’s jaw tightened. “Morgana.”
Zoe’s fingers curled slightly around the book. “She’s testing the barrier,” Zoe said quietly. James frowned. “Barrier?” Zack exhaled. “We’ll explain later. For now, double the patrols. No one moves alone, especially at night.” James nodded. “Already done.” Zoe stepped forward. “I want to see the borders.” Both men turned to her immediately. “No.”
Zack’s voice was firm, Zoe’s eyes narrowed- “I wasn’t asking.”
“And I’m not letting you walk into a potential trap,” Zack shot back. “She’s already found me once,” Zoe said. “Hiding isn’t going to stop her.”
“It might keep you alive long enough for us to figure out a plan.” Zoe stepped closer to him. “I am the plan.” The tension between them was immediate.
James stepped between them slightly. “Okay, let’s not do this again,” he muttered. “We just got her back.” Zoe exhaled sharply, turning away. “I’m not staying locked inside like some fragile thing.”
“You’re not fragile,” Zack said, softer now. “But you are a target.” That made her pause, because she knew it was true. Zoe closed her eyes briefly, then nodded once.
“Fine. Tonight, I will stay. Tomorrow, we will go together.” Zack studied her. Then, “Together,” he agreed. Later that night, Zoe sat alone in her Luna office. The Book of Life lay open in front of her; the pages had changed; they weren’t blank anymore. Faint writing—ancient and shifting—glowed softly under the light. Zoe leaned closer. Her breath caught. Images flickered across the page.
A battlefield, fire, a figure standing at the centre of it all, silver eyes, a white wolf, herself but not her. It depicted someone stronger, older and colder. Zoe’s heart started racing. “What… is this…” she whispered. The words on the page began to rearrange themselves. A name was formed, then another, then a symbol. Zoe’s head suddenly throbbed.
She gasped, clutching her temples as a flash tore through her mind— A voice. “You cannot save him.”Another voice, “I won’t kill him.” Then— “Then you will doom us all.” Zoe stumbled back from the desk, breathing heavily. “Stop… stop…” she whispered, the room spun, the images faded and just like that—Silence.
Zoe collapsed into her chair, trembling. Celeste stirred weakly. Zoe… “I saw something,” Zoe whispered. “I… I think it was me.” Her wolf didn’t respond immediately, and that scared her more than anything. A knock on the door broke the silence. “Zoe? Zack said. She quickly closed the book. “Come in.” He stepped inside, his eyes immediately scanning her face. “You don’t look okay.”
“I’m fine.”
He raised a brow. “You’re a terrible liar.” Zoe exhaled. “I saw something,” she admitted. Zack’s expression shifted instantly. “What kind of something?” Zoe hesitated, then— “Memories. Or… pieces of them.” Zack stepped closer. “What did you see?” Zoe looked down at the book. “A version of me I don’t recognise.”
He crouched in front of her, his gaze steady. “You’re still you.” She shook her head. “You don’t understand. She wasn’t… soft. Or forgiving. She was…” Zoe swallowed. “She was willing to do whatever it took.” Zack didn’t look surprised. “That sounds like you.” Zoe blinked at him. “That’s not comforting.” He smirked slightly. “It’s not meant to be.”
She huffed a quiet laugh despite herself. Then her expression sobered. “What if I become her again?” Zack reached up, cupping her face gently. “Then I’ll remind you who you are.” Zoe’s breath caught slightly. “You can’t promise that”, she said, “I just did.” Silence stretched between them. Zoe searched his eyes, and for the first time, she didn’t see the boy who had rejected her.
She saw the man who stayed; her chest tightened, confused, overwhelming, and real. Outside, the wind shifted, and far beyond the pack's borders—a pair of glowing eyes opened in the darkness, a faint, distorted smile forming. “She’s waking up…” Morgana whispered. Her fingers curled around a vial of silver-tinted blood. Zoe’s blood. “Good.” The mist around her thickened. “Because so am I.”
