Chapter 49 Admitting Fault is Useless
The name was like an icicle falling in winter, instantly piercing through the already fragile connection between her and Alex.
Emily's eyes dimmed as she returned to her previous indifference, and that fleeting smile froze over.
Alex hesitated for a moment, but eventually answered the call.
"Alex, you haven't come to the hospital to keep me company today. I want ice cream cake, can you buy it for me?" Grace's soft voice carried a hint of grievance.
Alex frowned, but his tone was gentle. "You can't have cold things right now, it's not good for the baby. Just bear with it a bit longer, I'll have someone send you something else."
"But I'm all alone in the hospital, I feel so miserable..." Grace's voice was tearful, "Alex, can't you just do this for me this once?"
Emily stood to the side, listening to their conversation and feeling nothing but disgust.
She slowly closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, only a desolate clarity remained.
Right, she had almost forgotten.
Alex's tenderness had never belonged to her.
How ridiculous that she had just let him affect her emotions.
Alex was still comforting Grace on the phone, but she had no desire to listen anymore. She turned and walked straight to the door. "Two days, or I'll see you in court."
"After the divorce papers are done, we'll owe each other nothing." Emily's calm tone didn't waver at all. With that, she left, her retreating figure resolute, without a trace of reluctance.
Alex's knuckles tightened around his phone.
"Hello? Alex, are you listening?"
"I think I just heard Miss Johnson's voice?"
"Are you... together? I didn't mean to interrupt you two."
On the other end of the line, Grace's crying continued intermittently.
But he couldn't listen anymore.
Emily's retreating figure was too resolute, like a dull knife cutting into his heart. The sudden dull pain made him even start to regret.
"Alex? Why aren't you saying anything?" Grace's voice carried a hint of unease, "Did I make you angry?"
Alex took a deep breath, suppressing the irritation and panic in his heart, "I still have things to deal with here, I'm hanging up. I'll have someone send you the cake, rest well."
Without waiting for Grace to say anything more, he hung up.
Just then, there was a gentle knock on the office door.
His assistant walked in with a document, asking nervously. "Mr. Baker, this is the proposal for our project bid."
Alex's tone was cold. "Mm."
The assistant put down the document and was about to leave when he was suddenly called back. "Wait."
The assistant's whole body trembled as he quickly turned around. "Does Mr. Baker have any other instructions?"
Alex's deep eyes held a complex emotion. "Go send the relevant documents to the old house and have Emily check if there are any problems."
"Also... ask if she has any other requirements or thoughts."
As he finished speaking, his sharp eyes narrowed.
The underlying meaning made the assistant's heart skip a beat.
Mr. Baker wasn't just asking him to deliver documents—he clearly wanted him to sound out Mrs. Baker's intentions.
This... this task was way too heavy.
The assistant stammered, "Mr. Baker, I..."
"If you can't do it well, I'll give you time off."
Alex's cold voice filled his ears. The assistant perked up, "Really, Mr. Baker?"
He knew it—Mr. Baker's employee benefits were always generous!
Alex glanced at him. "A long vacation. You'll never have to come back to the company."
The assistant was speechless.
He quickly forced a smile. "Don't worry, Mr. Baker, I'll definitely convey your message to Mrs. Baker!"
With that, he quickly ran off.
Meanwhile, at the old house.
Emily was sitting on the living room carpet, doing exercises along with a yoga video.
She wore loose home clothes, her long hair casually tied up, "Exhale..."
The doctor said that coordinating breathing with body stretching was supposedly good for the baby.
Her face carried a faint smile throughout, gentle and serene.
Susan stood nearby, occasionally handing her a piece of fruit.
"Mrs. Baker?"
Suddenly, a voice came from the doorway.
Emily stopped her movements. "Alex sent you?"
The assistant's face was full of smiles as he quickly handed over the organized documents. "Mrs. Baker, Mr. Baker asked me to bring you these procedure documents. Please take a look."
Emily took them and casually flipped through. They were basically just process forms with no issues.
Her expression didn't change. "Fine, let's proceed according to this process. Make it quick."
Working online all the time wasn't ideal—Paris headquarters wouldn't give her much time.
The assistant took back the documents and hesitated. "Mrs. Baker, actually Mr. Baker has been really busy lately, and he still cares about you very much in his heart. He just doesn't know how to express it."
Emily glanced at him, her eyes indifferent. "That has nothing to do with me."
The assistant bit his lip and continued with difficulty. "Look, if Mr. Baker... if he apologized to you, could you give him another chance?"
Emily raised an eyebrow. "Apologize? Even if he got on his knees and begged me, this divorce is happening."
Her tone was firm, without any room for negotiation.
The assistant's heart sank. This was bad—there was no way to explain this to Mr. Baker.
Back at Baker Corporation, the assistant spoke after a long mental preparation. "Mr. Baker."
Alex looked up. "What did she say?"
After asking, his fingers unconsciously rubbed the document.
The assistant's face fell. "Mrs. Baker said... said that even if you took the initiative to apologize and knelt before her, she's still getting this divorce."
The coffee cup Alex had just picked up immediately dropped onto the desk with a heavy sound that startled the assistant.
Alex's eyes grew increasingly cold.
The assistant was on the verge of tears. "Mr. Baker, you..."
"Get out!"
"Yes, yes, yes." The assistant didn't dare stay longer and ran off.
In the office, Alex looked at the desk full of documents and actually laughed in anger.
He hadn't expected Emily to be so resolute.
That afternoon.
Emily was video chatting with her grandmother when someone suddenly knocked on the door.
"Susan!" Margaret was scrolling through the latest trending videos, "See who it is. If it's that bastard, kick him out."
"Coming." Susan quickly went to open the door, but looked up to see Grace with a pale face.
Susan frowned. "Miss Miller? What are you doing here?"
Last time she almost made the old lady sick enough to go to the hospital, and she still had the nerve to come?
Grace had snuck out of the hospital. That phone call had made her uneasy.
She was thin and frail, still carrying the smell of hospital disinfectant, and said weakly. "Susan, I'm here to see Grandma. I really have something to say."
Susan snorted coldly, but couldn't very well turn her away, so she just returned to the living room. "Madam,"
Before she could finish, Grace walked straight in with red eyes and dropped to her knees with a thud. "Miss Johnson, I'm begging you, please give Alex back to me."
"We truly love each other, please..."
She cried pitifully, heartbroken.
"I know I shouldn't compete with you, shouldn't have gotten pregnant with this child. It's all my fault."
"If you're angry, hit me, scold me, but don't do this, okay? Dragging this out isn't good for anyone!"
Emily was grabbed by her clothes, her face cold to the extreme. "Are you sick?"
