Chapter 50 He Retrieved the Wedding Ring
Grace's face stiffened, and she cried even louder and more dramatically.
Margaret was so angry her face turned ashen. She grabbed her cane and was about to hit her. "You shameless woman, how dare you come to the Baker family and pester Emmie? Get out of here right now!"
Grace refused to get up, just kept crying. "Grandma, I truly love Alex."
"Besides, I'm pregnant. Alex really loves this child. You don't know how much he wants to be a father..."
Grace's tears fell like broken beads.
Emily felt even more pain hearing that last sentence.
Loves children?
But a calculating look flashed in Grace's eyes. This child was her weapon. She just needed to make Emily believe it was the Baker family's bloodline!
But Margaret was furious. Just as she was about to explode, Emily stopped her. "Grandma, you go upstairs and rest. Let me handle this."
Margaret looked at her with heartache in her eyes. "Emmie, don't let yourself be wronged. With Grandma here, no one can bully you."
"I know, don't worry Grandma." Emily nodded and signaled Susan to help the old lady upstairs.
Now, only the two of them were left in the living room.
Emily's face was expressionless. "Get up. Stop putting on this act in front of me. It's disgusting."
Grace's delicate face twisted for a moment. She stood up and wiped away her tears. "I'm telling you to leave the Baker family as soon as possible. Stop clinging to Alex. He doesn't love you at all! Continuing like this will only hurt each other. Why can't you just let us be together?"
"Let you be together?" Emily laughed. "Grace, do you really think I don't know anything?"
Suddenly, Grace's heart skipped a beat.
Before she could ask, Emily's sharp gaze swept over. "You don't love Alex. You love being Mrs. Baker—the wealth and status."
Exposed, Grace screamed."You're lying!"
Emily's smile turned cold. "Am I? When his company had problems, you broke up and left for abroad."
"Now that Alex is worth a hundred times more, you come back and cling to him, even going so far as to get pregnant. Do you think your little schemes can fool anyone?"
"Someone like you dares to talk about love?"
Emily's words showed no mercy, directly ripping off the last fig leaf.
Grace's face turned deathly pale. "You—you're trying to drive a wedge between us! Alex and I truly love each other. There were reasons for breaking up back then."
Emily raised an eyebrow, her tone increasingly mocking. "The reason being you thought he had no money or power and couldn't give you the wealthy lifestyle you wanted?"
"Grace, stop fooling yourself. You're not worthy of talking about love."
"Shut up!" Grace shrieked hysterically. "You're making all this up, deliberately trying to cause trouble! You..."
"What are you doing here?"
Suddenly, Alex's cold, sharp voice rang out from the doorway.
Grace froze, then quickly forced out a smile. "Alex, why are you back at this time?"
Alex's eyes narrowed. "I asked what you're doing here."
His cold attitude was completely different from before.
Grace panicked. Had he heard everything she just said?
She stumbled over to him and reached for his sleeve. "Alex, I came to apologize to Miss Johnson, but—but she misunderstood me."
"I didn't mean to steal you away..."
Before she finished speaking, tears fell first, her shoulders trembling slightly, looking utterly wronged and fragile.
Grace glanced at Emily, triumph in her eyes.
Watch—Alex's first choice would always be her!
Emily just found it laughable. "There's really a good show every day. Mr. Baker, I won't pay for this performance. It's quite poor quality."
But to her surprise, Alex directly pulled his sleeve away, his deep eyes seeming to hold a layer of gloom. "Is what you just said true or false?"
He was asking Emily.
Emily was stunned, then sneered, "Would you believe what I say? Why not investigate your first love here? Was there really a good reason back then, or did she just want to get rid of you quickly to avoid being dragged down?"Grace's crying stopped abruptly, all color draining from her face.
This—this bitch!
Her lips trembled. "Alex, you—how can you believe her? She's deliberately trying to turn us against each other."
Alex's gaze seemed coated with ice. "Will you leave on your own, or should I have someone escort you out?"
Grace couldn't believe it. "What—what?!"
She couldn't even believe Alex was saying this to her.
But the man didn't look at her again. Instead, he softened his sharp edge and looked to the side. "You go upstairs first. I'll handle this."
Emily's pupils moved slightly, somewhat surprised.
She looked up into Alex's eyes and frowned.
Why did she inexplicably feel like he was like an abandoned pet that had been found again?
Emily curled her lips sarcastically, turned and went upstairs without saying a word.
Alex's thin lips were pressed into almost a straight line.
His heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand, suffocatingly painful.Upstairs, Emily put away the passport and visa she'd just received.Once the divorce was finalized, she could leave.
Suddenly, Andrew called.
Emily was in a good mood and smiled. "Dad?"
"Emmie, I have good news for you. The Johnson family and the Moore family's cooperation is done!"
"The new project can start right away, and the company's transformation is secure. If nothing goes wrong, we'll have steady growth for the next five years." Andrew's voice was full of relief.
Hearing this, Emily's eyes suddenly lit up. "That's great, Dad."
Now she could go to Paris without any worries.
The Moore family was powerful with a solid foundation, and they had longstanding ties with the Johnson family. The cooperation would be very stable.
After hanging up, she immediately sent Matthew a message to thank him.
She knew that Matthew had helped a lot in making the cooperation between the two families happen.
Everything was in place, only waiting for the divorce procedures to be completed.
Emily took a deep breath and turned to start tidying up her desk.
Once the divorce paperwork was done, she would move out.
That night, a figure stumbled into her room.
Emily had taken her vitamins and supplements and was sleeping soundly, completely unaware someone had come in.
The man was dead drunk, entering the room from memory.
His gaze was deep but tinged with sorrow, his chiseled face like a sculpture.
Seeing the person lying on the bed, he raised his hand wanting to touch her.
The next second, Emily suddenly opened her eyes. "Alex, what are you doing!"
Emily sat up alertly.
But Alex didn't speak. He leaned down and hugged her.
His voice was hoarse, carrying the smell of alcohol. "Don't—don't push me away... Hold me, Emmie..."
