Chapter 48 No Respect
At this moment, the air in the lobby seemed to freeze.
Emily ignored the receptionist's strange reaction and simply put her phone away.
She casually looked around the company lobby. Everything showed strict rules and order, which really fit Alex's style—cold and harsh.
Before long.
The elevator dinged open.
Alex's tall figure appeared at the door.
He stepped out with a cold face, radiating an unapproachable aura. His icy gaze swept across the lobby and finally landed on Emily.
The employees around were shocked again.
Mr. Baker actually came down to meet someone in person?
Alex's face darkened as he walked straight over and grabbed her wrist. "Come upstairs with me."
His grip was so strong she couldn't break free.
Emily frowned but a slight smile curved her lips.
The next second, she simply shook the man off. "Mr. Baker, no need to be so nervous. I'm just here to ask about the divorce paperwork. I'll leave once I get my answer. Won't take up too much of your time."
Emily's voice wasn't loud, but everyone around could hear her.
Di-divorce?!
All the employees froze in place, too stunned to react.
Emily glanced at the man's darkening face with interest and added, "After all, being Mrs. Baker is uncomfortable. Better to get divorced sooner rather than later. Don't you think so, Mr. Baker?"
Alex's sharp eyes seemed to turn to ice, looking at Emily like unfathomable deep waters.
The receptionist closest to them stood frozen, her face full of shock and fear in her eyes. "Mrs. Baker?"
She didn't even dare pick up the pen she'd dropped.
The people around were even more shocked.
They never imagined that this woman with her cool demeanor was actually Mrs. Baker!
Throughout Baker Corporation, almost no one had seen Mr. Baker's wife, and few even knew he was married.
Now the lady herself suddenly shows up... to get divorced?
The information overload was too much for the employees to process.
With all the gossipy and shocked looks coming their way, Alex's face turned ice cold. "Don't you all have work to do?"
At his words, no one dared look anymore.
Alex dragged Emily straight toward the elevator.
Emily frowned. "Let go, you're hurting me."
The moment the elevator doors closed, Alex cornered her. His tall figure in the cramped elevator space was suffocating. "Emily, are you doing this on purpose?"
Emily's face was indifferent, but her lips curved in a mocking smile. "On purpose? What do you mean? I'm just telling the truth. We're about to get divorced anyway. Do we really need to hide it from everyone and keep pretending to be a loving couple? You might not be tired of it, but I am."
"You!" Alex was left speechless.
Watching Emily act so indifferent made him increasingly irritated. He wanted nothing more than to shut that mouth of hers.
Suddenly, he laughed in anger and took two steps closer.
Emily's expression changed slightly. She backed away, creating a safe distance. "What are you doing? I'm warning you, don't try anything."Perfect timing, the elevator doors opened.
Alex walked into his office with a cold face.
Emily followed behind unhurriedly, taking in the great view from the top floor of Baker Corporation.
At this moment, Alex sat behind his desk, saying with complete self-importance, "So what do you want? Don't tell me you're here to beg me not to divorce you."
Emily was speechless and laughed coldly. "On the contrary, I'm here to ask how far along the divorce process is. The lawyer hasn't had any news. Have you even had anyone push it forward?"
Alex leaned back lazily in his chair. "How would I know about the lawyer's business? Besides, I'm too busy with company projects. I don't have time for such trivial matters."
Trivial?Emily laughed, cold and distant. "Then call the lawyer right now."
Alex's dark eyes turned cold. "Emily, are you that eager to divorce me and go find Matthew?"
"Fine, if you won't call, I will." Emily didn't waste a single word. She only cared about the divorce progress.
With that, she walked to the desk. Alex's phone was right there on the surface.
She reached out to grab it, but the man beat her to it.
"Give it to me!" Emily instinctively tried to snatch it.
Alex raised an eyebrow and simply held his arm up high.
Emily grabbed at empty air, and in the struggle, she lost her balance.
"Ah—"
Just as she was about to fall, Alex's heart tightened and he immediately wrapped his arm around her waist.
"Ugh!" Alex grunted.
Emily fell onto his lap, their bodies suddenly pressed together.
The woman's faint fragrance drifted over. With soft warmth in his arms, Alex actually had a reaction.
Emily could definitely feel it, and her face immediately turned red. "Pervert!"
She struggled to get up, but before she could steady herself, Alex pressed her down. She fell back into his lap, softness meeting hardness in a damned perfect fit.
Alex's breathing suddenly grew heavy, the woman's flushed face filling his vision.
Delicate and rosy, soft and fragrant.
Besides, they hadn't had any intimate life for a long time.
A wave of heat spread from Alex's heart. His grip on the woman's waist suddenly tightened. "Emmie..."
His eyes darkened, not realizing that during that struggle, his phone had already been placed on the desk.
The next second, Emily's fingers quickly dialed the lawyer's number and shoved the phone right in Alex's face, raising an eyebrow. "Talk."
Alex's face darkened, his burning desire instantly doused with cold water.
"Hello, Mr. Baker?"
A confused voice came from the other end.
Alex's face darkened as he took the phone, his tone ice cold. "Push the divorce paperwork through immediately. Keep a close eye on it from your end."
On the other end, the lawyer was stunned, then said carefully, "Mr. Baker, wasn't it you who said you were too busy with company contracts recently and told us to pause the process until you gave further instructions?"
At these words, the atmosphere in the office froze.
Alex's tongue pressed against his teeth. What use was this lawyer? Might as well fire him.
Emily was also stunned. She looked up at his tense face. "What, you don't want to divorce me?"
Alex's face turned black as ink. "Just do what I tell you. Why all the nonsense!"
With that, he hung up decisively.
The lawyer on the other end was baffled and on the verge of tears.
It was clearly Mr. Baker who said to pause it, so why was he being blamed now?
The next second, Emily stood up, smoothing out the wrinkles in her clothes, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "If you don't want the divorce, just say so."
Alex looked at her raised eyes, his heartbeat starting to race out of control again.
He looked away, his tone awkward and stiff. "Don't flatter yourself. I've just been busy with partnership projects lately, that's all."
"That's great then." Emily immediately shot back.
Alex choked, unusually silent.
Emily looked at his reddening ears, an inexplicable emotion rising in her heart.
Just as things were slightly easing between them, Alex's phone rang again.
Emily thought it was the lawyer, but she didn't expect... it was Grace.
