Chapter 107 Suspicion Runs Wild
As soon as Alex finished speaking, the hospital room went dead quiet. You could hear a pin drop.
He held Eleanor, and rubbed her soft hair with his fingertips. "The villa password never changed. Your old room and stuff are all still the same."
"How about it? Think it over?" he said slowly.
He didn't dare say too much, afraid of scaring her off... or getting rejected flat out.
Even so, Emily got mad. She lowered her voice and snapped, "Alex, have you no shame?"
"We're di..." She almost blurted out "divorced," but her eyes landed on their clueless daughter.
She held back. "Don't you think it's ridiculous to say this now? I don't want to fight. Just behave and rest up. Don't make me get rude with you!"
She was really worn out by this guy's shameless act.
How had she never noticed this side of Alex before?
Back then, he was the one who let go coldly, who let Grace walk all over him.
He was the one who crushed whatever feelings they had left!
And now, one casual sentence to wipe it all away?
Alex watched her pretty face flush pink and narrowed his eyes slowly. "Emily, you know what I mean. Even if you go back, no one would say a word against it. And if you took Eleanor and moved back right now, same deal! Besides, you think Matthew can protect you two? If you're willing, I can take Eleanor..."
"Enough!" The last bit of warmth in Emily's eyes went cold.
Ridiculous. Totally ridiculous!
"Don't you find this gross?" Emily said with a cold laugh before she reached for the kid. "Eleanor, let's go back to our room with Mommy. There are too many people, and the noise is not good for resting."
Alex watched her and couldn't help but chuckle low. His chest shook a little, and even the ache in his stomach faded.
"You look way more alive like this."
A hundred times better than when she was cold and distant.
Emily's ears burned for no reason. Her voice got even colder. "If you're sick, get it treated."
Then she turned to the doctor nearby. "I think Mr. Baker's got more than just a stomach problem. Check his head too."
The doctor broke out in cold sweat.
Miss Johnson, you can't just say stuff like that!
Alex teased, "You're not married, so why not?"
Emily shot him a shocked look. "You investigated me?!"
Alex didn't answer. His gaze burned hotter.
Emily turned away, refusing to engage. She picked up Eleanor and headed out.
But Alex grabbed her wrist. His eyes were determined to get an answer, making him look scary.
Emily's heart skipped a beat, her wrists were burning.
As they stood there frozen, the door burst open from outside. A sharp, whiny voice cut in.
"Alex, I heard your stomach flared up again. How did it happen so soon? I... huh?"
Grace came in fast on high heels, carrying a fancy thermos. Her makeup was perfect, but she froze on the spot.
She didn't expect Emily to be there!
Grace's eyes hit Emily's wrist. A hidden flash of jealousy crossed them.
Alex frowned unhappily. "Why are you here?"
The coldness in his voice was nothing like the gentleness from before.
Grace's smile stiffened. "I visited Grandma this morning. The nurse said you've been pulling all-nighters, running between the hospital and company, and wore yourself out. Alex, why didn't you tell me you got this sick?" She said as she smoothly pushed Emily aside.
Right then, Alex half leaned against the bed and retorted with a stern face. "No need."
Grace's forced smile looked painful.
He'd been so gentle with Emily just now.. Why did his mood change when he saw her?
She'd seen it clear as day when she walked in—that softness in his eyes she'd never seen before.
And Emily stood right by the bed.
Even with a cold face, you could feel that tension between them no one else could touch.
The scene stung Grace's eyes.
Why?
Emily was divorced from Alex. Why was she still hogging his attention?
She gripped the thermos strap hard, knuckles white. She shoved down the jealousy boiling inside and reached to touch Alex's forehead—but he dodged without a word.
Grace laughed it off, not embarrassed, and set down the thermos.
"I know your stomach's bad, so I had Susan make you some soothing soup. Grandma's still in her room, if you collapse too what happens to the family?"
Every word was for Alex's sake, but her eyes kept flicking sideways.
Emily watched her clumsy act coldly. She was not moved, only annoyed. Who did she put on the act for?
She didn't want to get dragged into their mess. She said coolly, "Now that Miss Miller's here, take good care of Mr. Baker. Save him from going nuts somewhere else all day."
Emily's clear, cold voice did not carry any emotion.
With that, she hugged Eleanor to leave.
But the little one reached out her chubby hand and patted Alex's clothes. "Muah muah, no owie. Take medicine!"
Alex raised a brow. "Okay."
No one saw it coming, but as Eleanor turned, Grace finally got a good look at her cute face.
Grace's soft smile froze. Her pupils shrank.
This... this kid!
She stood there in shock, staring hard at Eleanor's face.
The kid looked like Emily at first glance, but up close... she was the spitting image of Alex as a child.
Especially those eyes.
Exactly like Alex's— carved from the same mold!
Grace had seen the kid from afar twice before and just figured she was Emily and Matthew's. Never thought twice.
But now, this close... that familiar feeling hit her like a truck. Alarm bells rang in her head.
Matthew's daughter?
No way!
All lies!
This was Alex's real kid!
Grace's heart pounded wild. She could barely hold back the raging jealousy.
Emily had Alex's baby in secret after the divorce?!
Good. Real good!
Grace forced a fake smile at Emily. Her sharp, piercing gaze made Emily tense up. Then Emily casually pulled Eleanor closer. "Miss Miller, you like kids so much?"
