Chapter 108 Don’t Think You’ll Get Your Way
"You..." Grace instinctively wanted to speak up and question her. "Your daughter..."
As expected, Emily cut her right off, "If there's nothing else, Miss Miller, make sure to take good care of Mr. Baker."
"Don't stare at other people's kids. It's rude." She warned.
After that, she walked out of the hospital room with hurried steps, also knowing exactly what Grace was thinking.
Grace would do whatever it took to get what she wants if she discovered Eleanor's real identity. Over her dead body would she ever let any harm come to her daughter.
Even after Emily and her daughter left, Grace couldn't shake off her suspicions.
Once those thoughts took root, they grew like weeds. She clenched her fists tight, letting her nails dig into her skin.
Emily was such a schemer. Did she really believe she'd be able to hide Alex's child and have him all for herself?
Absolutely not. Grace's mind was made up—if she couldn't have him, then neither could Emily.
A sudden, cold and sharp gaze fell upon her. "You went to the old house?"
Grace snapped back to reality and quickly explained, "Alex, you must believe me. I only went to grab some clean laundry for Grandma, and I also asked Susan for some of her caregiving tips, for you and Grandma. I didn't mean anything else, I..."
Alex's tone was flat,"You can go now. And don't go to the old house again."
Grace felt hurt, choking up just as she spoke, "Alex, I'm just worried about you... You're sick now, and Grandma isn't getting better. How can I leave without worrying? But that kid just now... she's Miss Johnson's and Matthew's daughter, right? She's so cute."
As she spoke, she opened the thermos bucket and took out the soup Susan had made.
But as soon as she put the spoon in, the man pushed it away.
Alex frowned. "Her business is none of yours!"
"Don't ask about things that aren't your concern." He warned.
Grace was startled and quickly lowered her eyes, "Alex, I get it. You should drink some while it's hot. Taking medicine on an empty stomach isn't good, and your stomach is already weak..."
Alex was upset and refused to drink the soup. He remained on the computer, working on his overseas business.
Meanwhile.
Emily hurried back holding Eleanor.
She didn't relax until she shut the door.
Only then did she realize her back was covered in a thin layer of sweat.
She gently put Eleanor on the hospital bed and touched her forehead, "Our Eleanor is great. The fever's gone already."
"Alright, lay down properly. Make sure your little hands are under the covers."
She smiled warmly, but her worried look persisted.
Her heart tightened again as she thought about the way Grace had glared at Eleanor. She was certainly now suspicious.
She had to set a limit with Alex immediately.
"Mommy, what's wrong?" Eleanor lay in bed, looking at her with big eyes. "Is Mommy unhappy?"
Emily brightened up her eyes, slowly sat on the edge of the bed and smiled. "No, baby! Mommy's just thinking about taking us both to the amusement park once you're better. Okay?"
"Okay!" Eleanor's eyes lit up, and she clapped her little hands happily. "I want to ride the carousel and eat cotton candy!"
"Anything you want." Emily nodded with a smile, but her heart felt heavy.
She needed to get Eleanor out of the hospital soon.
This place was too crowded and Grace could strike at anytime. Suddenly, there was a light knock against the door.
The caregiver came in and said softly, "Miss Johnson, Mr. Moore is here. He's waiting outside."
For a second, Emily was stunned, but then she quickly regained her composure. "Let him in."
As soon as she said it, Matthew walked in, holding a fancy flower basket with a crystal crown on top.
"Let Uncle see which little princess is so tough!" He went to the bedside and put the basket on the table.
Eleanor giggled nonstop.
Emily looked at Matthew, feeling a bit guilty.
After all, it was because of her that Alex...
"Matthew, you're so busy at the company. You didn't have to come."
"I'm not ever too busy for you." Matthew looked at her so softly and continued, "I was so worried... about you and Eleanor. I feel so much better now that I've seen you."
As he spoke, his eyes casually glanced outside the room, and his smile faded a bit. "I ran into Michael in the hallway earlier. He's... getting an IV in the next room?"
Emily nodded, her tone flat: "Yeah, acute gastritis."
Matthew noticed that she was avoiding looking directly at him. He was sad, but he didn't insist. He only let out a sigh, "Emmie, I won't force you to talk about the past you wish to forget, but... if Alex finds out about Eleanor, it's not going to end well."
Emily pressed her lips together.
Of course she knew.
But... she couldn't take that risk.
All she could do now was protect Eleanor and keep her away from Alex.
After a moment of silence, she said softly, "Thanks, Matthew. Don't worry about Eleanor and I. We'll be fine."
Matthew smiled and didn't say more.
That afternoon.
Alex was still getting his IV.
There was yet another light knock on the door. It opened and Margaret's experienced caregiver walked in, looking a little nervous "Mr. Baker, the old lady is very stable. She had therapy and a rehab massage this afternoon."
Alex stared at his computer screen without looking up, "Got it. I'll check on her later."
The caregiver hesitated, then added, "Also... this morning, Miss Miller waited outside the room for almost two hours. She said she didn't want to disturb your rest but was worried about the old lady."
Alex abruptly stopped typing when she said this, his eyes growing dark.
Grandma's condition had been critical this time—one slip and it could've been the end.
Grace had really saved her life this round.
If she hadn't found out on time, Grandma could have...
"Um, call Michael in when you go out."
"Yes!"
The caregiver was about to leave when a simply dressed figure walked in.
Grace's eyes looked perfectly exhausted. She was holding a warm towel and slowly walked over.
"Alex, I just asked the main doctor. Grandma's doing really well now, so don't worry too much. You should be focused on restoring your health."
She sounded so soft, and her eyes were full of concern as she stared at the IV in his hand.
Alex looked up, his expression calm and emotionless. "Thanks."
