Chapter 106 Alex Falls Ill
Eleanor grinned, showing her tiny teeth, and whispered, "Ouchie, blow it away!"
Then she cupped his big hand and blew on it gently twice. Her soft little cheeks puffed up like a ball.
Alex raised an eyebrow. "Hmm? What does that mean?"
Emily stepped forward and sat beside him. "She means blowing on it makes the pain go away."
Hearing this, something stirred in the man's heart. The little girl in front of him looked so worried and innocently cute.
Suddenly, he felt like this stomachache wasn't a big deal.
He slowly looked up.
The doctor didn't know what was going on and assumed they weren't divorced yet. He smiled and teased, "Mrs. Baker is so thoughtful, bringing the little miss to see Mr. Baker. What a happy family of three."
The whole room went dead silent!
Eleanor stared with big eyes, suddenly getting it. "Daddy?!"
That shocking word set off alarms in Emily's head!
Oh no!
She reached to pick up Eleanor, but Alex beat her to it.
Alex narrowed his eyes, picked up Eleanor, and sat her on his lap.
"Daddy? Who is Eleanor's daddy?"
His voice was gentler than ever.
Emily's skin crawled.
She knew Alex had picked up on it from Eleanor's words.
He might already realize Eleanor has no dad...
Emily's face turned cold as she looked at the doctor. "Please don't mix things up, doctor. In front of the child, I don't want any misunderstandings."
The doctor froze.
Misunderstanding?
But aren't Mr. Baker and Miss Johnson...
Emily didn't wait for anyone. She turned to Eleanor with a soft voice. "Baby, why did we come here?"
Eleanor leaned into Alex's arms, grabbing his shirt with her little hand. "Mommy said uncle is sick, ouchie! Uncle needs to take medicine and get better soon!"
Alex chuckled low, pinched her cheek. "Okay."
The assistant and doctor in the room were shocked, eyes nearly popping out.
This was their tough, no-nonsense Mr. Baker?
Why so gentle with Miss Johnson's daughter?!
Emily frowned, hating the stares. She said right away, "Michael said you're not cooperating with treatment. Take the medicine, and I'll take Eleanor and go."
Then she looked at Michael. "The recipe for his stomach soup from before—I'll send it to your phone. Get the doctor's medicine too."
Michael stood at the door, watching this, almost tearing up.
He sneaked a glance at his boss.
Seeing the man calm, even with a smile at his lips, Michael perked up. "Yes, Miss Johnson! I'll get it ready now!"
He hurried out, steps lighter than usual.
Few people in the world could make Mr. Baker listen like this!
Alex held Eleanor, a flicker of doubt in his eyes.
He was never good with kids. Even Grace's son got scared and stayed away from him.
This little girl sure was bold.
"You aren't scared of me?"
Eleanor blinked. "Handsome! Eleanor not scared!"
Alex raised a brow. "Young, but good taste. Just from liking looks, you can tell whose daughter she is."
Emily was speechless and sneered. "Mr. Baker is right. How can you judge people without looks? Otherwise, no repeated mistakes back then."
Her sarcasm was clear.
Alex narrowed his eyes, his vibe turning heavy for a second.
The doctor felt awkward and quickly brought the medicine. "Mr. Baker... See, Miss Johnson worries about you. Why not take the medicine? You'll get better faster."
Alex didn't speak, just held Eleanor and raised his sharp brow. "So, no real help with the concern?"
Emily shrugged helplessly. "Take the doctor's medicine on time and you'll be fine. No need to send your assistant to me. If Mr. Baker doesn't want to take it, suit yourself."
She saw exactly what he meant.
He wanted her to feed him!
No chance.
She went to pick up Eleanor to leave.
"Mommy!" The little girl suddenly called softly, grabbing Alex's arm. "Uncle hurts, needs medicine! Mommy~"
Emily went quiet.
She could never say no to her daughter's pleading. Seeing Eleanor's hopeful eyes, she gave in. Fine, she'd feed him!
Couldn't ruin her image in her daughter's eyes!
She grabbed the medicine box from the doctor.
There was half a glass of warm water on the table. She handed it all to Alex. "Eat."
No extra words.
Alex's smile deepened, teasing. "My hand's inconvenient. Trouble you to feed me."
Emily paused two seconds, then gritted out, "Only one hand on IV, and it's inconvenient?"
Alex smirked and bounced Eleanor in his arm.
The little girl had no clue, just blinked her big eyes innocently at her mom.
Emily took a deep breath. Her pretty, cool face suddenly broke into a bright smile—brighter than the sunlight streaming in the window.
Alex froze on the spot.
It had been so long since he'd seen such a good smile on her face. And it was just for him.
Emily smiled brightly. "Okay, then Mr. Baker please cooperate. Gotta eat all the medicine to get better fast."
With that, she stuffed a handful of pills into his mouth.
Alex’s mouth was instantly full.
The bitter taste spread instantly, but he wasn't mad. He smirked, the slight curve hiding his great mood.
Emily didn't even glance at him. "Here, water."
Alex took a sip and swallowed the medicine.
Throughout it all, his gaze never left her face.
Emily turned away, avoiding his gaze.
The doctor stood there, completely dumbfounded.
That's it?
If they'd known Mr. Baker listened to Miss Johnson like this, they'd have brought her sooner!
Emily checked her watch.
She had an online meeting. She quickly packed the medicine box. "Eleanor, time to go home. You need a nap."
But Eleanor hugged Alex's neck tight. "Mommy, is uncle coming home with us too?"
"What?!" Emily froze, totally shocked.
Alex simply smirked playfully. "I wouldn’t mind if you moved back to the Baker family home."
