Punishment.
Chapter 69:
Kaya's pov.
“Hand the baby over.” She demanded again but I slowly shook my head, fearing the worst. Why does she want to take my baby away from me? What wrong have I done, deciding to feed my baby?
“I.. I'm sorry I left my duties but my baby was hungry and I needed to attend to her.” I immediately said, hoping to curb her anger and stop her from carrying out whatever plans she had in mind for my child.
“You seem not to understand the level of trouble you could get into if I decide to report this to the Alpha. Do you think he'll listen to these sob stories?” She fired. I noticed that her eyes conceded sadness instead of the rage she was putting out.
“Your duties come before anything else, including the baby.” She added and I almost shed a tear. Now they're going to make me choose them over my child? Why don't I ever have a say? This is too much to bear.
“I won't neglect my duties, I promise.”
“That won't do. Hand the baby to me and get back to work.”
“But..”
“He won't be harmed, okay? I'm going to drop him off at the infirmary and you can pick him up from there afterwards.” She forcefully yanked Elior from my hands and I almost screamed. I didn't bother to struggle because Elior could get hurt. Instead, I started to plead that she let me keep the baby with me. My pleas fell on deaf ears as she took Elior away.
I wanted to follow her but two huge guards stood in my way, stopping me from going any further. Instead, they directed me to the path that led to the kitchen, threatening to get me punished if I don't go back to work.
Sadly, I turned around and went back to the kitchen, restless and unhappy. Everything about this place is gloomy. The people, the atmosphere, everything! I've been getting a strange feeling about this place and I don't understand why. Everyone seems to have this weary look in their eyes and no one seems to be bothered about what's going on around them.
When Feyi dropped dead before my eyes, everyone present there, including the guards and maids, had not a single look of shock on their faces. They seemed like they were used to these kinds of things and I ask, why would anyone be used to cruelty?
I have faced only problems all my life but I will never adjust to having only problems in my life! I have to strive for better but no one here seems to want to try at all.
I was in the kitchen for over three hours, cooking, washing and cooking again. Nothing made sense throughout the day, all I could think about was my son's condition and how she was being treated at the infirmary. He must be starving, do they even have any baby food to give him?
“Kaya!” Someone screamed my name and I jolted back to reality, turning to meet the gaze of one of the kitchen maids. She glared at me.
“Which dimension did you get lost in?” She asked.
“Um.. sorry. What did you need?”
“Alpha Silas needs you to come take the plates from his quarters. He insists that you do it.” She informed me and I nodded my head before going to wash my hands. I overheard the maids in front of me speaking and they didn't seem to give a damn that I heard them.
“She probably thinks she's special because the Alpha keeps requesting for her.”
“Wait until she finds out what's in store for her.”
Their words plunged me into deep thought, I pondered over what they said and realized that I might actually be in deeper trouble than I had thought.
Nonetheless, I went ahead to go to the Alpha's quarters. He was still sitting on the bed when I entered, but this time around, fully clothed and going through a file. My eyes fell on the tray of food, sitting on the counter with all the plates emptied. I hastily walked over to the counter and attempted to pick up the tray quickly but he halted me.
“Come over here.” He instructed, motioning towards the space beside him and his drawer. What does he want now? I want to be over and done with this so that I can go get my child.
I walked over to him in obedience, keeping my neck bent. I waited for him to speak but it seemed to be taking ages.
“Tell me exactly why you got ostracized from your pack.”
That was an odd question, I did not expect it one bit. Why was he asking me this out of nowhere? I just want to get my daughter!
“Why is that important?” I dared to ask and his eyebrows immediately furrowed, signifying his displeasure. I gulped, sweat bands forming around my face. I shouldn't have asked, he looked really angry.
“Did you just question me?” His voice was low and menacing, I could tell that danger was looming. I always have a nac for getting myself into trouble.
I slowly shook my head, “I'm sorry Alpha, it's just that I want to get my son. He has been away from me for hours and I..”
“Shut up!!” He roared and I staggered back, clenching my chest in shock and fear. He rose to his feet, his body towering above my small form.
“Did I not tell you not to let that child of yours get in the way of your duties? Do you think I care about your baby!?” He fired and shook my head, shaking at the spot and wishing that I had just kept quiet.
“I'm.. I'm sorry Alpha.”
“I asked you to shut up!!” He thundered again and I flinched the second time.
“You'll have to be punished for this!”
“I will make sure you don't see that baby of yours, ever again!”
“No! No, Alpha, no!!” I threw myself at his feet instantly.
