Risking his life to save Ethan
Risking his life to save Ethan
Chapter 161
Canon's POV
The blaring sound of a car speeding toward me cut off my thoughts. My head snapped to the side, and my hand tightened on the gun tucked against my side.
An ambulance raced closer to me with its red and white lights flashing as well as the emergency horn.
From where I was lying on the cold, rough pavement, I could see the driver, it was one of the policeman I’d overheard earlier, plotting with his superior about killing Ethan properly at the hospital.
“Well, now I don’t feel guilty about killing him…” I murmured, my voice low as a tight smile tugging at my lips. The ambulance’s horn kept screaming at me to get out of the way, but I remained still, counting slowly in my mind, “One… two… three…”
Just ten feet from where I lay, the ambulance’s brakes squealed, tires screeching against the asphalt. “What the hell is the meaning of this, man!” the policeman cursed, shoving the driver’s door open.
He hopped down, his boots thudding heavily as he stalked angrily toward me, muttering curses under his breath. His face was flushed with anger as he stopped in front of me. “What are you doing, sir?” he demanded, his hand resting on his gun, though his stance seemed calm he was very ready to attack me if I made any wrong move.
I turned my head, staring wide-eyed into the starry sky with the cool night air brushing my face as I tried to recall how it usually went in those soap drams Ava loved to watch “Why did you stop? Why didn’t you run me over? That’s exactly what I want to happen. I want to die…” I mumbled weakly, my voice trembling while internally i felt myself grimace at what I was doing.
“You are one dumb man, but I need you to get out of the way,” he said, his hand moving off his gun holster. A smirk stretched across my lips, that’s just what I needed.
I moved as fast as lightning, shocking the policeman. My gun was out in an instant, aimed at his head.
Without hesitation, I pulled the trigger, sending a bullet straight into his forehead. His body crumpled to the ground, blood pooling around him as his white uniform shirt slowly turned red as he bled out.
Without wasting another second, I sprinted to the still-open driver’s door of the ambulance and climbed in.
My foot slammed the accelerator just as I slammed the still open door shut behind me and the vehicle lurched forward, shaking as it rolled over the policeman’s body with a sickening thud. I snapped my hands and turned around the corner, tires squealing.
With one hand on the steering wheel, I pulled out my phone again. “I need you to cause some blockage on the road leading out of the church and also work with the cameras on the street.
I’m heading to the hospital, keep the road clear,” I ordered Zack, my voice sharp as I pressed harder on the gas, the engine roaring.
I glanced at the rearview mirror to see behind the ambulance. Ethan was strapped down to a stretcher in the back, his face was pale and there wasno medical person attending to him.
“Not even a single medical person, ha, they really want his death…” I said with raised eyebrows, my grip tightening on the wheel as I sped down the empty road, the city lights blurring past.
I had no problem getting to the hospital owned by Dr. Eric, a close friend of mine. It seemed Zack was able to stall those chasing the ambulance.
I’d seen some black SUVs tailing me earlier through the traffic but I’d lost them. The hospital’s led sign glowed ahead up ahead as I turned the corner and pulled calmly into the parking lot of the hospital that was slightly empty with a familiar face already waiting for me.
“Dr. Eric is in surgery with that woman,” a man in crisp nursing attire said, striding toward me with a group of standby nurses. He waved his hand, signaling them to pull Ethan from the ambulance. Their shoes squeaked on the hospital’s polished pavement as they hurridly got to work.
“Hmm, try to save this man too. I really don’t want to deal with Ava nagging and calling his name a million times,” I murmured, my voice trailing off as I got a closer look at Ethan.
The nurses lifted his limp form from the stretcher, his face was even pale under the harsh hospital lights. “Are you sure he’s still alive?” I blurted, watching his cold, stiff body disappear through the hospital’s glass doors.
“No idea. He’s lost a lot of blood and suffered severe burns. I’m off now. You should trash the ambulance,” Ryan said, giving me a final nod before stalking after the nurses, his white coat flapping behind him.
“He’s quite good-looking. I see why Ava’s obsessed…” I murmured, watching Ryan vanish behind the doors, my hands ran through my hair in total annoyance. “Gosh! I need a drink!” I groaned.
With another sigh, I trudged back to the ambulance’s still-open driver’s door and hopped in. The engine roared as I started it, pulling out of the hospital lot. I gripped the wheel tightly, immediately speeding onto the highway and running past traffic lights
My phone’s loud ring cut through the rumble of the engine. I answered the incoming call. “Canon, some police will intercept you at the junction. They don’t know Ethan’s been dropped off. Head toward the cliff and trash the ambulance, it’ll stop their search,” Zack said quickly, his voice tense.
“Smart thinking,” I nodded, about to end the call.
“Don’t die, Canon,” Zack added before cutting the line, making me chuckle.
“Of course, I’m going to hop off a cliff in a car. I’m literally putting my own life on the line…” I murmured, glancing at the rearview mirror.
Police cars raced toward me, their sirens wailing, red and blue lights flashing behind me as cars gave way for them as the gave me chase.
I slammed the gas pedal, the ambulance lurching forward as I veered into the lane leading to the cliff, the same cliff Ava had crashed down hours ago. The wind howled through the open window, and my heart pounded as I pressed harder on the accelerator on this dangerously narrow road.
