Erasing the evidence at a cost
Erasing the evidence at a cost
Chapter 162
Canon's POV
“Of course I was going to leap off a cliff in this ambulance. I’m literally risking my life here,” I muttered under my breath, my voice thick with adrenaline.
My eyes flicked over to the rearview mirror, catching the flashing red and blue lights of police cars tearing down the road behind me, their sirens wailing loudly as other road users made way for them to pass through as the gave me chase.
I slammed my foot harder on the gas pedal, the car jutting forwards as I swerved into the narrow lane leading to the cliff, the very same cliff where Ava had crashed down from just hours ago.
My eyebrows furrowed as my mind raced as I thought hard on piecing together a desperate plan that involved me coming out alive even though not completely fine.
The tires screeched against the asphalt, the ambulance shaking violently as I pushed it to its limits.
“0059, stop the vehicle now, or we will open fire!” The booming voice from a police megaphone cut through my bustling mind and my head snapped to the side to see the little speaker just below the dashboard.
My gaze snapped up to the cell phone dangling from the passenger seat of the ambulance. “At least they were no cameras of such.”
I ignored the the threats from the police men as I drove closer to the edge kf the cliff looking for a particular landmark.
“I think a few kilometers from where Ava crashed, the ocean connecting to City D starts fr there. If I plunge off that cliff, it’ll make my escape so much easier, the water would be a better idea than the rocks… but I need this ambulance to explode to erase all evidence because it would only be a matter of time before Ethan is found if the have reasons to believe he was alive and they would be killing off those involved too” I kept on dodging and weaving through oncoming cars as their horns blared at me.
“Okay, this should work,” I mumbled, my jaw tight with determination. With one hand gripping the steering wheel, I yanked my gun from my jacket, the cold metal heavy in my palm.
I slammed the butt of the gun against the windshield, the harsh impact sending a shockwave through my arm. The ambulance swerved wildly, tires squealing, but I wrestled the wheel back under control, my knuckles white. Sweat beaded on my forehead but I kept going.
With my teeth clenched, I hammered the gun’s butt against the windshield again and again.
Each strike making the metal of the gun dig in futher into my skin as my muscles tensed up.
Slowly, tiny cracks appeared slowly across the glass, and I hit even harder. Finally, the windshield shattered with a loud crash.
I wasted no time, using the gun’s butt to scrape away the jagged pieces still clinging to the frame, clearing a path as the cold air blasted straight at my face and harshly whipping my hair across my face.
“Fuck!” I cursed, pain jutting through my hand as a glass shard sliced my palm, it was very deep and blood dripped fast onto the dashboard. I gritted my teeth, ignoring the sting, and glanced at the rearview mirror.
The police cars were still chasing, but I’d gained a precious distance they seemed to have bn slowed down by a crash. Ahead, the ocean slowly came into view and my hands tightened on the wheel.
“Shit!” I shouted, yanking the wheel hard to the side as a car suddenly rounded the bend, its headlights blinding me.
The ambulance lurched, tires screaming in protest as I narrowly avoided running head first into the car. My heart pounded so loudly in my head as I began making calculations.
“My training never prepared me for something like this,” I whispered, forcing a shaky laugh to push back the anxiety rising up my chest.
My slightly trembling fingers moved to the seatbelt, snapping it free from the buckle that had held me in place.
With my bleeding handwhuch was now slick with warm blood that dripped onto the dashboard, I yanked my belt loose too all the while keeping my eyes on the road.
With my face set in a firm line, I gripped the edge of my belt and carefully threaded it through the openings on the steering wheel, tying to make a loose knot.
I looped the buckle around the trafficator to the right but left it unfastened just using it to hold the wheel steady for now.
My plan was to lock the steering in place later to make sure that the ambulance stayed on course. Still gripping the wheel with one hand, I slowly rose from the seat, my legs shaky as the vehicle swayed.
“This is your last warning! Pull over the vehicle, or we will open fire!” The voice boomed again through the police megaphone.
My eyes darted to the rearview mirror, where the flashing lights of the pursuing cars glowed brighter, they were gaining on me, their tires screeching as I had slowed the ambulance moments ago to set up my escape.
“We will open fire in five, four, three, two, one!” The voice crackled through the telecom device, each word tightening the knot harded in my stomach.
I didn’t waste another second. With a grunt, I jerked the steering wheel hard to the right, slamming my foot on the accelerator.
The ambulance darted forward, tires scratching against the pavement. I hurriedly hooked the belt in place, securing the wheel to keep the vehicle aimed at a massive boulder below the cliff’s edge that I had been searching for.
“This is risky,” I murmured as the ambulance broke through the railing by the cliffs edge.
“Fuck!” I grunted in shock as the contact with the railing had be lurching forward with force and out of the now open windshield.
My heart was in my mouth as the water seemed to rush up to meet me, “Arrrrrhhhhh!” A scream tore through my throat not being able to hold the fear that had settled in my heart back.
